I think Set mode is gone?
Started up initial Pokemon Violet game/1st attempt at a Nuzlocke. Went into options as soon as I could. I did not see any option to adjust Shift/Set . . . Hope they put it back in, playing Set manually will be tedious (i.e. refusing all the free offers to switch pokemon).

Smartphone indoctrination
Finally caved and got a smartphone after 15-ish years of avoiding them. Caved because 3g got crushed and my 4g cellphone replacement had terrible speakers, mic, reception, buttons, UI, and other problems. Why do I hate smartphones? A) I hate touch screens (tried for half a decade to get used to them on the DS, never got comfortable with it). I hate not being able to feel the distinctions between multiple buttons via touch, I hate covering my viewing component with human grease and other murky grossness, and I hate the weird quirks that seem to somehow cause certain touches to work and others to not.
B) I hate being connected to email, social media, and the internet in general via a device that I’m expected by friends, family, and supervisors to keep powered on and close to me at all times. Why? Because keeping the internet open at all times feels like I’m always naked and surrounded by open windows on all sides, floor and ceiling included. My sister hooked me up with my smartphone and helped me set it up. I’m very grateful for that . . . , but . . . She keeps checking in and asking me how it works and I’ll be like “Okay. Z is better, but I don’t like W” and she’ll go into leading questions that sound like she’s expecting me to love everything about my smartphone way more than non-smart cellphones, but I don’t. It’s a tradeoff. At least for now.
Maybe someday I’ll fall in love with them, just like the majority of humans. For now I’m still in that angry old man mode I’ve been in since I first encountered smartphones in my 20s.

Illusion of Gaia Thoughts
@noisetank01 and I just Finished Illusion of Gaia! . . . This is one of the most inspiring pieces of fiction I’ve ever experienced. It’s also one that didn’t wrap up the way I hoped. This was one of those games that I never owned as a kid. I rented it, multiple times, but each time my save file got overwritten by someone else before I rented it next (this was despite there being 2 empty save files and me making my save in file 3; meaning the sadistic fucker who erased over it had to go out of their way to erase it and ignored the open slots). Years later I emulated it, lost a hard drive, lost a save. Still later I emulated it again, accidentally saved with a state, accidentally loaded it, lost a lot of progress. Years later @noisetank01 and I tried to play it, somehow our save got messed up and we lost most of progress. We tried again this year, managed to partially restore our progress? (somehow), then lost a chunk of it again. Well finally, finally, finally, we managed to plow through the rest of the game. The ending was not what I hoped for. The endpoint and several major components of the story were, contradictory, and not well explained, but the journey there had many fun and interesting moments. In some of these moments IoG partially or completely subverted a few really common, really frustrating tropes common in jrpgs and in fiction in general. These pieces were my first exposure to some ideas that I value greatly ontologically, and that I’ve borrowed from heavily creatively.
The translation is very sound grammar/spelling-wise (especially for a game released before FFVI [aka FFIII]), but I wonder if some things were missed or mixed up in this translation that contributed to the plots flaws in the version released in the states.
Outside of the plot, what is the game like? Think a more linear 2D Zelda game, with fun and challenging combat, fewer but more effectively utilized upgrades, surprisingly wide sprites ranging from good to amazing quality (for an snes game), and a serviceable soundtrack with a few standout songs. The controls are excellent in combat, just keep in mind that pressing any directional input in the last window of any dialogue will close it (the one frustrating control flaw of this game). So yeah, Illusion of Gaia’s conclusion seems like it’s missing pieces, but much of what you will experience along the way is fun, interesting, and very worthwhile. At least it was to me, now and as a kid.

Edit: Coming from the perspective of a cisgender man with the biases this entails. Folks are expressing a lot of interpretations on the recent Guilty Gear Strive Bridget content: https://boundingintocomics.com/2022/08/10/guilty-gear-strive-appears-to-retcon-bridget-into-transgender-girl-game-journos-celebrate/ On the one hand, more positive trans representation is great.
On the other hand, If Bridget now identifies as a girl, this is different from how Bridget’s gender identity was self-expressed in earlier appearances: In the English translation of the Guilty Gear XX story mode paths & win/loss quotes, Bridget is striving to be more manly and insists on being called a man, after being raised as a girl by Bridget’s parents, due to a superstition in Bridget’s home village that views same gender twins as bad luck. Examples:
win quote vs Baiken:
Bridget: "This is what people call masculinity! I've been longing for
someone like you. Can you teach me how to be unladylike?"
Story mode before path divergences - Initial encounter with I-No:
I-No: “Oh, what a cute girl!”
           Bridget: “I'm not a girl. . . I'm a bounty hunter. . .”
Story mode Path 3 - VS Johnny:
Johnny: “Sticking around with good guys is boring. Men aren't that bad. Right, miss?”
          Bridget: “Miss?”
Story mode path 3 - After defeating Johnny:
          Johnny: “The greatest failure of this Johnny's life. . . you. . . you're a boy, aren't you!”
Bridget: “Yes. There's a reason for my appearance. . .”
So from what I can gather (based on what I’ve read/heard about so far in Bridget’s story path in Strive), in one path of Strive’s story mode Bridget self-identifies as a girl, the gender that Bridget was assigned at birth/pressured to accept throughout Bridget’s childhood, but rejected by Bridget during the time-frame in which Bridget was seeking Dizzy's bounty during the events of XX.
|
Whether this change in self-expressed identity is a result of giving into cultural expectations, or a result of a change in Bridget’s concept of self and what gender Bridget identifies as, is a detail that seems open to interpretation in the context of both the conditions of unlocking this story path (losing a round in a particular fight), and the differences between this story path and others (in 2 other paths, in which Bridget wins every round of the fight mentioned above, Bridget does not affirm identifying as a girl).
I guess there are also the questions of how accurate the English translations of Strive and XX were as well as whether or not the events of XX’s Story mode are cannon (, and if so, which paths).

some of you may've heard about that fancy "bionic reading" typefont thats supposed to be easier for neurodivergent people to read (if you're unfamiliar, it bolds the first few letters of each word to make it easier to follow)
well guess what, its locked behind a $500 a month API to write in because fuck you!
introducing, Not Bionic Reading! it is literally just the bionic reading typefont but for free. god bless neocities
anyone who can, pls reblog!
