Sidekicks by Dan Santat (ANY AGE!)
Tumblr media
After searching the shelves for an easy read for a certain patron of mine, I came across this spectacular graphic novel about the world of pets of Superheros. This clever books explores the troubles of Captain Amazing as he reaches a certain age. Lucky he has some pretty trusty pets that decide they would make awesome new sidekicks to him. But the question is which one should get the supreme spot. Through discoveries, old friends, training, and an loving finale these pets help save their city and their owner.
My personal thoughts on this novel could not be more positive. It is adorable and admirable. I especially enjoyed the art style. They did not try to make it overly comic book style, but still maintained the comic movements. It is also a very quick read. There is just enough dialogue to keep you into the plot but a good 4th of the art is facial expressions and action movements which is perfect for reluctant young readers. Each pet has their own personality that doesn't clash with any of its ‘siblings.’ One thing I noticed in other reviews of this novel was the lack of origin story that is classic to the superhero genre. In my opinion this novel didn’t need a origin story, everything was either self explanatory of let to the imagination, and that works very well for this particular narrative.
All in all i give Sidekicks at 8 out of 10.

Angel CatBird Review (Ages 12&above)
Though many avid readers will commend author Margaret Atwood for her brilliant style of dystonia and feminist writing, they will surely miss the hilarious comic she has become with her graphic novel Angel CatBird. This obscene ‘superhero’ origin story is full of cat and bird jokes that are just on the surface that they do not rub it in your face but sometimes causes you to put the book down for a moment just to laugh out loud. The book start with main character Strig Fedeelus accepting a job as a chemist for Dr. Muriod who is looking for the perfect formula mix species. On a dark night Strig perfects the formula, but before storing the mix, his cat escapes the house causing Strig to run out of the house and gets hit by a car. Strig awakens with new sensations and a particular inclination to fish. From there the story becomes a hilarious action adventure along with Strig’s love interest Cate Leone who is half cat.
What makes me want to read the next installment is the way the book laughs at its self. Too many comics and superhero origin stories try to make the most outrageous concepts serious, creepy, or justified when all you want to do is laugh at it. Atwood’s dialogue wants you to laugh at it, it is begging to be laughed at. Author and artist were able to take a silly concept that very well could have been made into a serious book and made it mischievous and fun for the reader. I thought it was genuinely great. Another thing was the use of the side characters. Dracula cat was great and so unexpected that he would immediately become a fan favorite. The only negative was the villain. I hope in the next installments that he becomes a more diverse character than just the nasty (mildly perverted)rat.
Thanks for reading my review! If you have anything you would like for me to review please let me know! And remember to use a book mark.
