Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.
That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.
That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.
That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.
That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.
That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.
That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it'd succeed.
None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.
I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I've seen, but I feel like a lot of people don't really get how much labor goes into curation, too.
If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren't necessarily the direct action of creation, they're doing a lot of fandom labor, and it's often largely unrecognized.
Celebrate fan work!
To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.

for the love of god, anon???? it’s not the copyrighted material that people are watermarking, it’s the GIF itself??? no one’s claiming to own any movie or show or artist lmao we’re claiming our actual efforts, the gifs that we spend hours, days making and that many people will steal without thinking twice and especially to repost on other websites
those are actual violations. maybe report reposters instead. we would appreciate it a lot
it’s just insane that we as gifmakers are expected to do everything for free, then get our edits stolen and belittled over and over and just keep quiet? nah fuck this shit
people claim giffing is oh so easy then go make them yourselves!! maybe then you’ll understand the disrespect we face DAILY
people claim they need more gifmakers but won’t support the ones they already have
people only care about super high quality gifs but don’t respect the actual process of making them and don’t allow gifmakers to learn and grow
many of us get discouraged because people WON’T REBLOG GIFS!!!!! there’s only so much we can do with so little support!!!!
you expect excellence but you don’t give us any chance or credit or fucking RESPECT
but right yeah, putting a watermark on something we actually made is wrong
this is petty but i always report the blogs of people who watermark their gifs. technically you aren't allowed to post gifs of material that you do not hold the copyright to on tumblr (it's in the terms and conditions that we all ignored and clicked "ok" on when we signed up lol), so when i see someone acting like editing makes copyrighted material their own i report that copyright violation. maybe that makes me a bad person but i don't care tbh because we don't need people with big egos in fandom spaces.
that's so dumb lmao people make gifs for fun, as a hobby and simply don't want it reposted so it's not that deep that people watermark it. you're the one with a big ego here actually to go out of your way and report them
