Room (2015), Dir. Lenny Abrahamson
Summary: a young mother, who was kidnapped as a teenager and has since been held captive, decides to break her son free so that he may experience the world.
Commentary: I… wow. I watched this movie for the first time long ago, and now I remembered how wonderful it really is. This movie is painful, horrifying and heartbreaking. It is also beautiful, human and with so much heart. Every single performance is impecable, the photography is one of the most effective and beautiful I’ve ever seen.

Weathering With You (2020), Dir. Makoto Shinkai
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: Set during a period of exceptionally rainy weather, high-school boy Hodaka Morishima runs away from his troubled rural home to Tokyo and befriends an orphan girl who can manipulate the weather.
Thoughts: my gods this movie. It is so sweet and hopeful, filled with stunning animation and a wonderful use of sound. The story is very young, even a little innocent. And, like most great films, it seeks to play with the emotions of the audience. I found the characters to be very lovable, and their mission one you root for and ache for and wish for. It is, at its core, a story of love. Be it romance, family, friendship and even the love you have for yourself.

Klaus (2019) Dir. Sergio Pablos
Summary: When Jesper distinguishes himself as the postal academy's worst student, he is stationed on a frozen island above the Arctic Circle, where the feuding locals hardly exchange words let alone letters. Jesper is about to give up when he finds an ally in local teacher Alva , and discovers Klaus, a mysterious carpenter who lives alone in a cabin full of handmade toys. These unlikely friendships return laughter to Smeerensburg, forging a new legacy of generous neighbors, magical lore and stockings hung by the chimney with care.
Commentary: Has there ever been a more perfect Christmas film? I don't think so. Klaus is a beautiful story that merges stunning animation with heart-pulling storytelling in order to deliver what can only be called a piece of art. Every character is so very lovable, the relationships between them stunning and complex, and the message of hope and friendship within the film is so valuable to both children and adults alike.
A simple act of kindness always sparks another

Martyr’s Lane (2021), Directed by Ruth Plath
Summary: Leah, a young girl, lives with her distanced and sometimes dysfunctional family in a church house. Her mother carries a locket, which Leah can sometimes hear speak. After she opens it, apparitions of a little girl plague Leah's days and nights, hiding a secret she didn't even know was kept within her family.
Comments: The film is an exploration of grief and loss through children's eyes. While within the horror genre, this film doesn't try to constantly scare the audience, allowing the story and the characters to flow however rapidly or slowly is best. In many ways, it doesn't feel like a horror movie, more like a film that happens to have ghosts in it. And while there are disturbing, frightening moments throughout the film, I found it to be very human and real as well.

Get to know me meme: 4/10 movies » Love, Rosie (2014)
“Sometimes you don’t see that the best thing that’s ever happened to you is sitting there, right under your nose. But that’s fine. Because I’ve realized that no matter where you are, or what you’re doing, or who you’re with, I will always, honestly, truly, completely, love you.”

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016), Directed by Burr Steers
Summary: When a rich guy named Mr. Bingley moves into the neighborhood, he takes a liking to Jane Bennet. His friend Mr. Darcy, who's rich and handsome and also an accomplished zombie slayer, manages to offend nearly everyone in town with his arrogant behavior, including the deadly yet lovely Elizabeth Bennet.
Commentary: Once again, a film I expected nothing from came along and gave me everything. The photography was the biggest surprise for me, I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. It's so dynamic and beautifully done, lovely. The soundtrack was also stunning, especially a piece close to the ending and climax of the film. And, of course, the humor in this film is a delight. I expected a frankly silly film that focused more on gore-ish jokes than anything, and while there is gore, this film is suprisingly faithful to Austen's story. The film is made seriously, it allows for emotional depth and character growth while sustaining itself as a dark comedy. Overall, I very much enjoyed it.
Besides, what's better than watching these characters intellectually insulting each other with high class accents while beating the living hell out of the other. Amazing.
