I’m heartbroken 💔 at the news of Macgyver’s cancellation. There was so much more story that deserved to be told. The cast deserved better. The fans deserve better than what we’ve gotten.

If we can’t have Macgyver anymore, can we get a Dark!Riley/Artemis 37 spin-off? Mac can come along with her as they use their formidable skills together causing chaos in their wake.

I’ve got one word for you: syndication.

Macgyver will be 6 episodes away from qualifying for syndication at the end of season 5. They will renew the show - that doesn’t mean they won’t drag their feet a bit with the announcement - because there is too much money to be made by being able to syndicate the show and license the rights to play the reruns on other networks not to. It also means that ratings are a far less important measure for renewal after they hit syndication since the show will be generating revenue from multiple networks.

CBS also wouldn’t have invested in a new show runner if they were going to cancel it. They could just ended it when they fired Lenkov, which would have meant 5x10 would have been it’s series finale 👀👀👀. They see it’s potential and are on board with Maser’s new direction for the show. You can see proof on their social media of that recently.

General musings of a life long fan

I always remember having general anxiety this time of year as school always got crazy and I would turn to my favorite outlets to relieve some stress. Even as a young teenager I still remember waiting to see if my favorite shows would be picked up for another season. Back then I always shipped TV couples. I remember reading and writing fanfiction when it was difficult to find on the internet and it wasn’t mainstream. It was a thing as a fan that you never talked about because you were embarrassed. I remember being maybe 13 and loving Louis and Clark-the new adventures of Superman with Dean Cain and Terri Hatcher and being so upset when My So called life didn’t get picked up for another season. Later I remember going onto fanboards and scouring the internet for spoilers and to talk about Gilmore Girls theories with other fans. I remember researching who renewed contracts for seasons and sending letters to the network when Cote left NCIS. I remember the disappointment of seeing Lucifer cancelled and then the excitement when it was picked up by Netflix (see sometimes those fan based campaigns do make a difference!) I think fanfiction, shipping, and being invested in TV shows has been apart of what makes me who I am for nearly 3 decades and counting (side note—ugh am I really turning 41 in a few weeks even though I feel 30 most days.) Thankfully I meet someone 23 years ago and married him a few years later and he whole-heartedly gets my obsessions and is just as passionate about his own stuff. We even made a kid who is shaping up to be just like us at 8! That bring me to today as I periodically check the net/social media to see if MacGyver has been pickup yet for a 6th season and I know honestly we will probably have to wait at least a few more weeks as it usually has been announced closer to the end of April. Just recently I saw a click bait article off Twitter talking about the possibility of one of the actor’s leaving the show. The article literally had nothing to say and no merit what so ever. I always said social media is a blessing and a curse these days. While I do absolutely LOVE how many spoilers and behind the scenes photos we get and getting to dissect and have theories. Fans sometimes try and read into every last detail (for example a great season wrap speech by a primary actor thanking cast and crew for all their hard work) I guess I have been feeling a bit nostalgic/reflective as of late with my real life stress taking it’s toll and my birthday on the horizon (I went into teaching funny enough and this time of year is still stressful even on the other side of the desk.) Writing has always been my escape so I’m looking to get back into writing and actually publishing some fanfiction. I have no problem with the writing part it’s the hitting submit part that I seem to have trouble with. So MacRiley fam I’m putting it out into the mix so maybe I will follow through with my promise to myself since I’m on break this week :) So here is hoping that we get renewed for a full season 6 and all our MacGyver family is aboard for that ride. On a side note-It was amazing seeing CBS tweeting about a ship they would like to see move along with a picture of Mac and Riley under the space blanket. I’m hoping that bodes well for MacRiley!

I was gonna do it but somebody beat me to it! Riley’s now listed as a Love Interest on Mac’s wiki page. It’s so beautiful to see. And soon it will say “Riley Davis - girlfriend”, we’re speaking it into existence.

5x11 🤯 Macriley moments & musings

Just some of my musings about what 5x11 revealed about Mac and Riley.

🤨👀Mac knows when Riley’s lying, even if it’s to herself.

🤯 Mac can doggedly pursue an answer in a relationship when he wants to. It just show how much less meaningful his past girlfriends and current girlfriend are to him. Usually he withdraws and keeps secrets, but not with Riley.

🤯 Mac’s always been aware of his feelings for Riley, but never thought he had a chance with her. He thought there was a wall between them, when it was really a door. As a result of that assumption, he stuffed them aside like he does with all of the painful emotions he doesn’t know how to handle.

🤯 The nosiness about her love life and small fits of jealousy he’s shown throughout the show - with Billy and Aubrey - were real.

🤯 The small intimate moments where they act like they are more than just friends was intentional on Mac’s part - see 2x16 (at the vineyard), 5x03 (picnic scene). He’s taking the small moments with her when he can get them.

🤯 His moment in 5x06 with Riley was not the realization of his feelings for her, but that she may reciprocate his feelings. The revelation scared him enough to literally run away from her in the kitchen.

🤯 Mac’s never told Bozer about his feelings for Riley since they met. Bozer suspects his BFF has feelings, but given how Mac’s talked about thinking there’s always been a wall between him and Riley, I think that Mac’s never shared his feelings about Riley with anyone. It would possibly explain why Bozer hasn’t tried to meddle too much in Mac’s love life since he started with Desi. He thinks his BFF is in denial.

🤯 His comment to Bozer in 5x06 is the closest thing he’s said about his feelings to Bozer about Riley in 6+ years. It appears Bozer thinks this is Mac’s lightbulb moment is regarding his own feelings for Riley, not his awareness that Riley may have feelings for him. Mac seriously needs to have a ❤️ to ❤️ with his oldest BFF.

🤯 Mac affirms that he sees her after she comments that she didn’t think he saw her skin color. She’s moved.

🤯 Riley affirms that she’s always listening to Mac when he speaks which surprises him. He’s not used to people actually listening to him when he macsplains or be able to remember and apply the lessons on their own.

🤯😍🔥 Mac and Riley got to play out the “get nekkid to save themselves and the mission” trope.

🤯 Mac had his ‘I’m in love with my best friend’ moment when they hugged after disabling the nanotechnology that mirrors Riley’s 4x04 moment. They both realize that they feel at home in each other’s arms, only to shy away at the realization.

🤯 Riley means the world 🌎 to Mac and he trusts her implicitly. This is so much bigger than an ‘I love you’ in the middle of a fight at work with his girlfriend. I feel the strong possibility of a dark!Riley arc coming to MacGyver in the future. ⌨️ Artemis37 is rising.

👀 Mac only references being happy with Desi after Riley brings up how she thought he was happy with Desi. He wasn’t facing her when he said it and didn’t seem convinced of the statement when he said it.

👀🤨 Riley lies about her feelings and actively suppresses them because she genuinely believes Mac’s happy with Desi. She’s also afraid that acknowledging them and giving Mac a chance will negatively upend her entire life if the relationship fails. Since her past relationships haven’t ended well, it’s left her scared to try with Mac. If they fail, she loses not just her relationship, but potentially her friendship and her work.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall 10/10 on episode. Can’t wait to see where we go from here.

Macgyver fandom thoughts

Number 1. Okay everyone. Let’s take a nice deep relaxing breath and let go of the strain of MacGyver being renewed. I get you’re all worried about ratings. In the first few years of a show they significantly affect whether a show gets canceled or not. HOWEVER, once a series gets close to the 100 episode mark, rating become far less important. Why does the 100 episode mark matter? That’s typically when the show becomes eligible for syndication. Syndication means the show can be packaged up and the reruns sold to other networks for a 🛥 load of 💵. MacGyver ends season 5 at 94 episodes. The execs aren’t going to cancel a show that’s 6 episodes away from syndication. They like 💵 too much for that. So please don’t stress over whether or not it will be renewed. It’s gonna happen. They’ve put too much work and 💵 into changing the show runners to not to seek a return on their investment.

Number 2. Watching tv shows and not letting the writers get to you is an art and a choice. I’ve been shipping since JAG. You think five years with MacGyver is hard? Imagine shipping for a decade and only getting a muted payoff in the series finale. 👀👀👀 That was back in the day when you couldn’t binge watch a series at the time 🦖. You had to watch live or record on VHS. That’s not to minimize your pain or say you can’t freak out. All of that are valid choices. But it doesn’t have to be so crazy making. Yes, I hear and feel your frustration. I too want #MacRiley together yesterday, but that’s not how TV works, especially with OTPs. They drag that out as long as they can because they know it’s a big portion of what the audience invests in when they watch a show in order for the show to survive. Plot that effectively drives the characters development - as we’ve seen in 5x10 and 5x11 - is much more rewarding than watching a show that focused more on the action and stunts than developing its characters. Action and stunts help, but are secondary in long term audience engagement. You either want the audience to love, hate, or love to hate the characters on the screen. Audience apathy is the death knell for TV shows.

The MacGyver writers have been carefully crafting Mac and Riley’s relationship since 1x01 when the sparks flew off of the scene when Mac interviewed Riley to figure out how to get past Nikki’s firewalls. They’ve been dropping hints about it since 1x02 when Mac comments to Jack that Riley is the healthiest relationship either will have w/ a woman. That still holds true today. They’ve been very deliberate in building a rock solid friendship layered with mutual respect and implicit trust in each other. Now everything is shifting because both are aware that there are more than feelings of friendship between them. It will impact their relationship moving forward. You can’t unring that bell once it’s been rung.

Mac and Riley have figure out how to work together now that that Riley’s feelings are out in the open. It’s not as simple as it seems. This decision impacts them personally and professionally. Riley needs, wants and deserves to have more in her life than her work. She wants to make a positive difference and won’t be solely defined based on who she’s in relationship with. Mac needs to prove to Riley that they can make it work, that the foundation of mutual respect, implicit trust and deep friendship is strong enough to weather their job at the Phoenix. Distractions, even good ones, are dangerous in Mac and Riley’s line of work.

That’s why I was so frustrated at Mac and Desi in season 4. Their sniping, bickering, and general unpleasantness put the team at risk. People got hurt - not physically but emotionally. Riley got hurt. Having to carry that weight of watching the man you love in a unhealthy relationship couldn’t have been easy. Bozer lost his best friend. The team’s trust was shattered and still isn’t fully repaired.

Regardless of Riley or even Mac’s feeling for Riley, Mac needs to work on what he wants in life and determine if Desi is the right fit. We know she isn’t, but until he figures that out don’t be surprised if we get more Mac Desi not less. You don’t have to like it, but when you understand how tv show plots work, it can remove some of that emotional drama that we can get easily caught up in. Just remember in life and tv shows, you need more than bbq chips, adrenaline and sex to make a healthy marriage, and so do Mac and Desi. They both deserve better than that. They both deserve to be in happy, healthy relationships, even if it’s not with each other.

At the end of the day, tv shows are just entertainment. That’s not to say they don’t have value, but in the grand scheme of things, they aren’t that important. Keeping yourself and your family safe, making money, taking care of your mental and physical health, investing time in healthy family and friends are so much more important. The angst of your favorite show is not actual life and death. I know it may feel that way, but it’s not. There are worse things in life than it taking a few more episodes or seasons to see the outcome you’ve been watching the show for. I am going to enjoy the ride even when I don’t agree with the decisions the writers or characters make. I’ve been doing that for more than 25 years. At the end of the day, I too deserve to enjoy the life I have and continue to use the gifts I’ve been given to help others. So do you.

I agree that it will be more Mac Desi focused in the next couple episodes, because Mac needs to sort through his feelings and they haven’t officially broke up. Mac and Riley also need sometime apart. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. I expect that to prove true with Mac and Riley in 5x12, 5x13, and 5x14.

He will get to see what’s it like to really rely on Desi like he’s relied on Riley in the past. I expect it will be like oil and water. He’s lived with Riley, he’s worked side by side with her and she knows what to do when he’s Macgyvering a solution. She listens to him and uses the knowledge he’s given her to Macgyver her way out when needed. They blend seamlessly and are in harmony in the field. Desi and Mac, not so much. I imagine living with Desi will be a stark contrast. Desi’s great with her special skills, but understanding Mac and his methods isn’t one of them. That happiness he claims to have is going to be sorely tested. We will see if the progress Mac thinks they’ve made in his relationship with Desi can withstand really being and living together without all the adrenaline. I’m guessing not.

Mac is definitely not sold on this whole “door staying closed” thing. And it didn’t really seem like Riley was either. So realistically, how long do we think it will last?

I kinda figured they’d play the friendzone for a moment. Mostly because I think that’s always (or should always) be a barrier in friends to lovers. That hesitation to take the next step for fear of ruining it all.

But I don’t for a second believe it’ll last forever. I’m in the, “Shit hits the fan and they reevaluate their biggest regrets” camp, myself.

What are you guys’ thoughts on it?

I think he said that cause that’s what he thinks she wants right now.

He’s got some soul searching to do now that he knows Riley has feelings for him. They may be buried deep, but that’s the thing about emotions, they never stay buried. They both know that.

What kind of life does he want?

Is his current relationship with Desi enough? If not, why?

Is he truly happy with Desi or is it familiarity and fear of being alone?

Can he really live his life not knowing what he and Riley could be?

The rest of the season will be him working through those questions in his head while contrasting his relationship with both women and dealing with the repercussions from the nanotechnology he and Riley inhaled.

Mac is definitely not sold on this whole “door staying closed” thing. And it didn’t really seem like Riley was either. So realistically, how long do we think it will last?

I kinda figured they’d play the friendzone for a moment. Mostly because I think that’s always (or should always) be a barrier in friends to lovers. That hesitation to take the next step for fear of ruining it all.
