KDrama Womens Week
#HerToo or F4
I have a feeling there will be a lot of people who use this same drama for this day, at least if they go the F4 route, because Age of Youth was the ensemble that we all collectively decided to adopt in the first season.
But I want to talk about the character Jung Ye Eun, and specifically the portrayal of an abusive relationship and the recovery process. Because I don’t remember another example of this in drama land, and I can’t think of one in really any tv/film media examples either.
In the first season, you see a real example of an abusive relationship. The most memorable part of the portrayal for me was that in the early chunk of the episodes, the relationship seems … fine. And it starts to go bad, and maybe you see it, maybe you don’t. Regardless, the kidnapping comes from left field, when the previous episodes have all been about different characters.
And the show ends without a real resolution to that story line. Yeah, she is saved, and a lot of the girls have a happy ending. But she doesn’t really seem to be moving on. And you even see her have a PTSD moment at the very end of the show.
And in the second season, we see how her life has been affected. How fragile her self-worth is. And how her support systems have been built (or fallen) in the aftermath.
It feels like a real experience a real person has had, or could have. It feels like a specific experience instead of a broad one, generalized to get as many people as possible.
She faced the extreme of harassment, and she has made it out of the other side of it, alive. Maybe scarred, definitely changed, but definitely alive.
Also, if you need an F4, this show has GOT you!

I kind of love when there’s a connection between the drama and the title of said drama.
