Robin Hood and Little John walkin' through the forest--
alright! so! early robin hood ballads and narratives don't have an origin story for little john, but a later ballad (robin hood and little john) does. they fight on a bridge in it, but I like looking at illustrations, so I've swapped out the bridge for that tree peaking out of the panel in the first panel bc I enjoy louis rhead's illustrations a lot.
this is some kind of introduction scene after they fight and climb out of the river!

Sherwood by Alfred Noyes
Sherwood in the twilight, is Robin Hood awake? Grey and ghostly shadows are gliding through the brake, Shadows of the dappled deer, dreaming of the morn, Dreaming of a shadowy man that winds a shadowy horn.
Robin Hood is here again: all his merry thieves Hear a ghostly bugle-note shivering through the leaves, Calling as he used to call, faint and far away, In Sherwood, in Sherwood, about the break of day.
Merry, merry England has kissed the lips of June: All the wings of fairyland were here beneath the moon, Like a flight of rose-leaves fluttering in a mist Of opal and ruby and pearl and amethyst.
Merry, merry England is waking as of old, With eyes of blither hazel and hair of brighter gold: For Robin Hood is here again beneath the bursting spray In Sherwood, in Sherwood, about the break of day.
Love is in the greenwood building him a house Of wild rose and hawthorn and honeysuckle boughs: Love is in the greenwood, dawn is in the skies, And Marian is waiting with a glory in her eyes.
Hark! The dazzled laverock climbs the golden steep! Marian is waiting: is Robin Hood asleep? Round the fairy grass-rings frolic elf and fay, In Sherwood, in Sherwood, about the break of day.
Oberon, Oberon, rake away the gold, Rake away the red leaves, roll away the mould, Rake away the gold leaves, roll away the red, And wake Will Scarlett from his leafy forest bed.
Friar Tuck and Little John are riding down together With quarter-staff and drinking-can and grey goose-feather. The dead are coming back again, the years are rolled away In Sherwood, in Sherwood, about the break of day.
Softly over Sherwood the south wind blows. All the heart of England his in every rose Hears across the greenwood the sunny whisper leap, Sherwood in the red dawn, is Robin Hood asleep?
Hark, the voice of England wakes him as of old And, shattering the silence with a cry of brighter gold Bugles in the greenwood echo from the steep, Sherwood in the red dawn, is Robin Hood asleep?
Where the deer are gliding down the shadowy glen All across the glades of fern he calls his merry men-- Doublets of the Lincoln green glancing through the May In Sherwood, in Sherwood, about the break of day--
Calls them and they answer: from aisles of oak and ash Rings the Follow! Follow! and the boughs begin to crash, The ferns begin to flutter and the flowers begin to fly, And through the crimson dawning the robber band goes by.
Robin! Robin! Robin! All his merry thieves Answer as the bugle-note shivers through the leaves, Calling as he used to call, faint and far away, In Sherwood, in Sherwood, about the break of day.

Related to the last reblog, now seems like a good time to share my headcanon that 'Earl of Huntingdon' is a title that King Richard/Edward/whoever gives Robin during the year or so that he’s pardoned and living in London (ok strictly speaking this bit isn't headcanon. I'm sure I've seen it in some book or other. But I'm adopting it).
And then Robin leaves and goes back to the forest and the Earl of Huntingdon becomes sort of a joke figure among the Merry Men. Obviously he doesn't claim the title anymore but whenever he gets too bossy/full of himself, Little John and Will Stutely are nudging each other, 'ooh, better behave lads, the Earl of Huntingdon's here.' Something goes wrong and you're looking for someone to blame? Earl of Huntingdon's fault, that fellow's useless.
And then someone who only knew Robin in London shows up like 'I'm looking for the Earl of Huntingdon,' and the outlaws all collapse with laughter, because he’s become this absurd fictional character to them.

My constant urge to just blog every tiny detail of robin hood lore on here but never wanting to annoy my followers with 100k words about how robin hood is most likely not buried at Kirklees Priory and how will scarlet actually was Robin's relative in most stories and especially in how robin was originally supposed to be a yeoman before classist biases changed it 100s of years ago and the stupid idea of him being a rich nobleman still pursist to this day because of it and yeah I hear myself I'll shut up now😅

I want a series where it starts with a classic Robin Hood origin story. But then halfway through book two some old geezer shoves a baby at Maid Marian, and she gets attached. Standard hijinks ensue, the baby gets captured, the baby gets lost, someone kidnaps the baby 'for its own good' and they have to convince these people that despite being outlaws they can totally be respectable parents.
Then five books later, the kid, who they named Arthur, is fifteen and he pulls some magic sword out of a rock.
Now you've got a teenage king who was raised by a bunch of backroad outlaws. And no way are those outlaw parents, (and uncles/brothers) going to let their precious child bear the burden of the throne alone.

Based on the fact that the Sheriff of Nottingham often meets Robin multiple times and yet never seems to recognise him, I hereby headcanon that the man is faceblind.

Depictions of Will Scarlet wearing all Scarlet clothing is so freaking funny cause Scarlet was one of the most expensive colors you could find (at least from my research which means google correct me if I'm wrong)

it's always "you gnawed off your own leg to escape like an animal caught in a trap" and never "why didn't anyone try to help you out of the trap" or "why weren't you provided with any other resources to escape the trap with except for your own teeth"

Robin being personally devout is I think fairly common (especially in older versions) but the idea that he gets random fits of piety and drags all the Merry Men off to Mass with him is new to me and I think it's hilarious

Scrolling through the Robin Hood tag like
- unrelated Richard Armitage photo
- unrelated Taren Edgerton photo
- post that's actually about something else and has a throwaway mention of Robin Hood but is tagged with his name anyway
- Prince John x reader fic
- art of Sir Hiss from the animated Disney film
- post from a porn bot that you have to report
- maybe, possibly, one (1) post that's actually about Robin Hood but if you look at it too closely it will dissolve into the ether and you'll never find it again

Robin: As a devout Catholic, it upsets me that I haven't been to Mass lately. I shall go (without backup) despite the fact that this has potential to get me killed.
Also Robin: *steals from every monk he comes across, actions that will definitely not lead to him being recognised in church*
