None of these quite work, but surely three thirds of a shitpost is equivalent to one shitpost. I continue to be completely fixated on Augustine and Mercymorn as the alpha couple, right down to her describing herself as unlovable. Artist credit @exmakina

The mountain goats/Taylor swift Truther playlist has updated and it has some AMAZING pairs, like this one above: People say friends (who are pop stars) shouldn't destroy one another, what do they know about friends (who are pop stars)?

Tay and Travis are out here chewing pseudoephedrine like bubblegum, getting revenge by loudly living their best lives.

The parsimony of using a Jenny from Thebes song with a TPD song is beautiful and elegant, and although the obvious choice would've been something from Tallahassee Going to Dallas (about fleeing the police after having unalived an elected official) is better for thematic reasons.

This one fucking rewired my brain, I had never before considered the similarities between dating Matty Healy and methamphetamine addiction.
Anyway back to Locked Tomb content next week, it's just been a very Goatlor weekend.

I think about Magnus keeping Abigail's dance card, because true love is acquisitive. I think about the hegemonic pains they take with Isaac and Jeannemary. I think about them finding shelter and comfort in each other, and it's all right there in Riches and Wonders. When I saw JD perform this last he forgot the third verse and needed the audience to remind him, and I was all over laughing and crying at once, which feels especially Abigail/Magnus appropriate. Grendel's Mother is, from beginning to end, a song about resurrection beasts (which has some interesting implications about Beowulf as an intertext). Just listen to it, seriously. Artist credit, as per watermark, Briarwick

I'm imagining this is Nona's drawing of the cradle creature, the one that weirded out the Angel, paired cruelly with the Mountain Goats song Deuteronomy 2:10, which is sung from the perspective of a thylacine. Artist credit: Elephant a Day

These books are so fucking sad sometimes, it makes you wonder why we bother reading them. And Matthew 25:21, which JD wrote about his mother-in-law, should probably have been retroactively made illegal. But it's alright, isn't it: you can't take loved away. We'll know each other in the river, see each other as we truly are. Ok time to go weep profusely bye love you. Artist Credit: @crazy-racoon (who appears to have a mountain goats lyric blog title)

She just wants to eat a dessert, your honor.
Goths (2017) as an album is about half composed of songs about wistful middle-aged musicians (e.g. Paid in Cocaine, Shelved, Andrew Eldritch is Moving Back to Leeds), and those songs are very Jod to me. But the other half is semi-autobiographical tales of teens being awkward and self-conscious and destructive and adorable: so, Gideon, and to some extent Jeannemary and Isaac. Consider: Wear Black, Grey King and the Silver Flame Attunement, Stench of the Unburied, and of course Unicorn Tolerance. Artist Credit: Tommy Arnold lol

Life of the World to Come has A LOT of harrow-coded songs, because it has grief and religious trauma and those are the reverend daughter's middle names. Psalm 40:2 has more of the unhinged, Gideon-wearing-Harrow energy though, hence this thing. "Each morning new, Each day shot through with all the sharp, small shards of shrapnel that seem to burst out of me and you." Artist credit: Twitter user denimcatfish

I meant to upload this yesterday but the Big Sad happened. Born In the Morning's family name probably isn't "Morning" and it is canon that he is good at drawing cats so could probably manage a better family portrait than this but shou ga nai, nobody else has bothered to draw fanart of characters so minor they don't actually appear. In this they are parallel to their Mountain Goats counterparts the Diaz Brothers, minor characters in Scarface. "Beam of a flashlight,All night in the woods. Hunt us like dogs, And then string us up for good." Artist Credit: Me, tragically.

This could've been SO MANY different Mountain Goats lines: at first I thought "I will be made a new creature one bright day", "Well, you looked me in the eye, ready to die/We were becoming what we are Collapsing stars". "See that young man who dwells inside his body like an uninvited guest" is possibly too on the nose. But this one, from Heretic Pride, caught my heart because of the sense of triumph in death. "I hope you die. I hope we both die." Julien Baker's cover of No Children carries all the rage and hate and love and exhaustion that Mercymorn took with her to the Stoma. Artist Credit: @midnightcrows
Do you think Mercy's ghost clung to Augustine via the blood and viscera on him as he went into the stoma? Do you think she promised, even in death, that they would not go forward alone?

Night Light was probably my least favorite song on Transcendental Youth before JFT came out, but now it's absolutely heartbreaking. If Jenny is Commander Wake, then surely Gideon/Pyrrha is the narrator of Source Decay and From the Nebraska Plant. "Probably never going to see her again in this life I guess; not sure what I'm gonna do." Artist credit Merrigold

"You can't take loved away." I couldn't decide whether Animal Mask (suggested by a cool person on SP1) or Magpie fits this scene better. Animal Mask has the concealed identities and the childlike optimism, Magpie has the looming sense of dread and the ending of all good things. I just went with both, let me know which you like better. Artist credit: @sunfloowerlatte-art who is hands down my favorite locked tomb artist
