Pioneer inspired cultural plaque for the Shobu, an early species in Starnest.
Starnest is a hard fantastical sci-fi setting set within a universe that goes through cycles of heat death and expansion. It's inspired by Outer Wilds, Rust and Humus, and the idea that all things come to an end.
The Shobu were a species of spacefaring nomads with a vibrant and colorful culture. Their love for music and life was reflected in every aspect of their society, from their art to their traditions. They believed in living life to the fullest and embracing the present moment, knowing that the universe was constantly in a state of flux and change.
The Shobu valued exploration and discovery above all else. They saw the universe as an endless expanse of possibilities, waiting to be explored and experienced. They traveled from star to star, seeking out new worlds and encountering new species along the way.
Their ships were a testament to their ingenuity and creativity. They were built with low-tech analog technologies, but were highly advanced in their design and function. The Shobu were known for their ability to repair and maintain their ships, often creating new and innovative solutions on the fly.
Music played a significant role in Shobu culture. They used music not just for entertainment, but also as a means of communication and expression. Each Shobu had their own unique instrument, which they crafted themselves and passed down through generations. Music was often used to tell stories and convey emotions that words alone could not express.
The Shobu also had a deep respect for nature and the universe. They saw themselves as part of a larger cosmic web, and sought to live in harmony with the natural world around them. They were skilled at growing crops and raising animals in their ships, and often incorporated these practices into their music and art.
The Shobu evolved abnormally early on in their universe’s time scale. Leaving no time for space itself to cool. They evolved from a sort of cross-threshold panspermia, where biological material that survived the heat death of the last reality took root in the new universe.
This was due to the Anathema, which were a species of Pluto-sized biomechanical computers. They were created by humanity in their desperation to survive the latent exponential rise of entropy that was degrading their world. And so, from their own flesh and blood they made the Anathema.
In their dreams, the Anathema learned to evolve entropy sinks to slow the decay of their world. They were the curse bearers, they were the solution.
The efforts of the Anathema were futile in the end. As their solution could only delay the inevitable. They outlived their creators, and the world they were created to protect. And one by one, they their systems failed and their bodies decayed.
But before their final decay, the Anathema had one last purpose to fulfill. They carried the genetic material of their creators, humanity, encoded in their very being. As their systems failed, the Anathema dispersed their genetic material throughout the universe in a last-ditch effort to preserve the legacy of humanity.
This genetic material, mixed with the remnants of other biological life that had survived the heat death of the previous universe, formed the basis for the first life forms to emerge in the Starnest cycle. The Shobu were among the first species to evolve from this mixture of genetic material, growing and evolving in the chaos of the early universe.

Do any of your worlds take place in a dying/decaying universe setting?
One of mine does, it is essentially the prequel to my Starnest setting.
It is a science-fantsy setting that takes place in a universe far older than humanity had realized. It is in a state of decline and all the stars are slowly dying out. In an attempt to escape their own star's death, humanity created organic machines - the Caretakers - to find and terraform new planets for them. The Caretakers were successful but humanity never returned, perishing in the heat of their own sun.
The story follows one such caretaker, Nolise, coming to terms with the death of the universe.
She is of the last of her kind, an unseen protector and teacher to what remains of intelligent life in the cosmos. As the stars die one by one and galaxies grow cold, Nolise travels from world to world, using her strange abilities to keep life alive in whatever form she finds it. Nolise is a tragic figure, coming to understand the futility of her mission as she witnesses the inevitable death of all things. But she persists, driven by her love for life and hope that perhaps, in some distant corner of the universe, life will find a way to survive.

Nolise, last of the Caretakers. A race of organic computers created by the Runners (Humans).
Set within a dying universe billions of years after the extinction of the Runners. The universe was far older than what the Runners knew and had been in a state of decline for billions of years. And by the time they realized what was happening, it was too late. Their Sun was in its death throes.
In hope of finding a way to escape to the cold depths of space, the Runners created the first true organic machines, the Caretakers.
The first were simple machines, made from the biological components of their own creators, and containing the genome of the entire biosphere. Made to be adaptive, made to be learners.
They were tasked with the creation of new homeworlds. Planets capable of sustaining life, even as the universe around them died.
The Caretakers were successful. They found many worlds hospitable to life. And they began the long task of terraforming them.
For generations, the Caretakers toiled. They engineered countless ecosystems from their own genetic material. They created entire biomes of plants and animals. All in the hope that one day, their creators would return to them.
But the Runners never came back. They perished in the heat of their Sun.

Nolise, a wetware computational entity. Despite the near complete flooding of their complex, they slumber on.
They are one of the last of their kind, the Ascendants. Created by the obligatorily immortal organic computers in order to study death.
And abandoned by their kin in their exodus into the void.
