I’ve been seeing you get a lot of Asks about your art so sorry if this is getting repetitive but I wanted to ask how you went about developing your personal style? Do you have any particular inspirations or other artists you tried to emulate with how you draw? And is there anything you’d want to change/improve on with the way you currently draw?

Don't be sorry! I actually really prefer talking about it... It gets me thinking about things I don't normally get to think about, and I also really love sharing information about how I do what I do because I really believe in making all info as accessible as possible when it comes to art!

I am gonna put this under a break tho since it got pretty long;;

1. To me, building a style is about so many different, miniscule conscious and subconscious choices. A huge part of it has to do with the act of drawing itself... Like, how heavy handed I am, how I hold my pen, what lines physically feel good for me to make. Drawing is a stim for me, so all that stuff really matters. It made drawing a very physical thing. I like doing heavy-handed lines and ink splatters and grungy ink work because it feels good to do in real life, and also it looks cool. I can also replicate it on a tablet.

This is why even though my style might change slightly depending on what I'm drawing, there are still certain things that are consistent throughout:

So as well as using elements of things I liked in other people's styles (things like eye shapes, face shapes, etc.), being able to figure out how I liked drawing traditionally and experimenting with lots of different kinds of art supplies and methods of making art really helped a lot.

2. I spent a few months trying to draw like Gerald Scarfe in college... Though before that it was Egon Schiele... And in 6th grade I tried to draw like Jhonen Vazquez... And in 5th grade I tried to draw like Jamie Hewlett....

I think I'm pretty happy finally being able to draw mostly like myself, now.

Not that I don't get inspiration from artists of course... I'm still inspired by all those styles, as well as other artists I see on Twitter or Tumblr or while I'm around vending. I think it's important to surround yourself with the things that inspire you, especially if those things are coming from other artists. I just don't find myself emulating as much as I used to.

3. YEAH there's TONS of stuff I wanna get better at. I know I said this before but backgrounds and colors are two big ones for me. I have my safety color palettes, but I need to find more. Also backgrounds suck and I'm bad at perspective. BUT I'm trying to force myself to draw them more.

...Coloring backgrounds is double hard...

I also want to be able to make more interesting comic pages... and I need to get better at writing comics... and I also need to learn how to flat properly and quickly so I can do it for money.

I'm also slowly trying to get better at drawing stylized animals, but it's not a main focus yet.

Also I'm trying to improve my printmaking skills, since I'm not very good at relief carving yet.

Also I want to learn how to paint someday.

That last one's mostly out of spite tho.

thinking about Luffy from the perspective of an everyday schmo in his world is hilarious. And I don’t mean “I heard he was 20 feet tall” etc., though that is still really funny. I mean think about what’s public knowledge on him.

this guy comes out of nowhere, declares war on the fucking government, blows up the centre of their justice system, breaks into the most secure prison in the world, and breaks right back out again so he can jump feet-first into the biggest war in recent memory, during which you find out oh hey he’s brothers with the pirate king’s kid, his dad’s also trying to overthrow the government, his grandpa’s a war hero who works for said government, and he has some kind of connection to one of the Four Emperors. He runs with a guy who used to hunt pirates for a living and a woman who researches ancient weapons of mass destruction, and also has a pet raccoon or something. A few weeks later he breaks into the headquarters of the world’s biggest military (which is actively hunting him btw) just so he can ring a bell. Oh, and Roger’s right hand man is there, helping him.

And then he fucking disappears for two years.

Suddenly he comes back, teams up with a Warlord of the Sea to save some country you’ve never heard of by dethroning its king, tries to assassinate one of the Emperors at her own tea party, and then runs off and takes down a completely different Emperor while his friends take out the first one. He’s got one of the villains from your comic books, a world-famous rock musician, and another Warlord (who’s also some kind of fish monster) all working for him and his other brother is the second in command of the revolutionaries. absolutely buckwild. how do you cope

i like to believe that Izuku still believes in santa, and nobody knows but Katsuki.

Inko would just assume he figured it out when he was like 8, but Izuku didn't really have any friends so nobody else told him.

Katsuki still isnt friends with Izuku, still hates him, but he only hates him in the way you hate your annoying younger cousin. he pisses you off, but you're family. so when they're 9, in the weeks leading up to christmas, Katsuki sees Izuku crying his eyes out, and since he doesnt have any injuries, he gets curious as to why and asks him whats up.

Izuku proceeds to cry about how hes afraid santa isnt gonna come this year because theres been no elf around his house (Inko, assuming Izuku was too old to give a shit, stopped doing that sort of stuff).

Katsukis known santa wasnt real for a couple years now, but again, despite them being the same age, hes got that annoying younger cousin relationship with Izuku, so instinctively he feels like hes gotta keep the christmas magic alive.

SOMEHOW, he finds himself actually sneaking into Izukus house to move the fucking elf around and actually put gifts under the tree from 'santa'. Inko assumes its Izuku doing it, so doesnt say anything, and Izukus just happy santa didnt abandon him.

except as they get older, Izuku still doesn't figure out santa isnt real. Katsuki refuses to crush his spirit, so and again and again, he ends up begrudgingly being santa for him. hes broken into Izukus house so many fucking times at this point. after year 2 he gave up on actually eating the cookies and milk that Izuku leaves out so he just throws them in a bush on the way home. he is absolutely fucking PISSED that he has to keep doing this every year, but hes kinda gotten himself into this situation where he has no choice because he refuses to crush Izukus dreams after putting this much effort into keeping them alive.

hes done this since age 9. by the time they're in UA, its kinda instinctual to act as if santa is real infront of Izuku. the rest of the class does NOT get the memo. at one point a bunch of them start trading stories of when their parents told them santa wasn't real, and Izuku walked in. Katsuki started playing bass boosted music through his phone on full volume to make sure he didn't hear.

Izuku keeps making comments about how santas real, but people just laugh it off as a joke. the only thing that confuses them is that Katsuki keeps fully backing up everything he says.

like a week before the first christmas they all have to spend at the dorms, they all figure out Izuku thinks its real when Katsuki ISNT in the room, and they proceed to try and gently break the news to him. he cries for an hour.

but eventually he calms down and they start talking about how he never figured it out, and about how all the santa stuff that parents usually do when their children are really young, just... never stopped.

its at this point Katsuki walks in, sits down, listens to the conversation, and freezes. because fuck.

they're all like 'so if it wasn't your mom who was giving you gifts from santa, who was it?' and Katsuki just sinks down in his chair silently.

Izuku, remembering that time Katsuki tried to get him to leave out protein bars instead of cookies 'incase santa was training to be a hero' when they were 14:

People don’t seem to know anything about B.B yet they are Death note fans!!! I made this hoping people may learn a little bit about him XD Edit: fixed the issue with the shinigami part and fixed the Rue Ryuzaki part. Thank you everyone who noticed those two screw ups (totally embarrassing!)
