This idea has been in my head for a while, so let’s get it going. 

Over the weeks I have been doing an assignment on “creating a response piece to a digital activism movement (metoo, blacklivesmatter, idlenomore, etc.)”. Of course I took the chance to write about hockey and inclusion. While doing the research, it occurs to me that we often see amazing people sharing lists of sources on social issues in hockey, such as The Broadscast’s hockey and anti-racism sources, UoT’s Hockey in Canadian Society course material, etc. But how many people would really spend time to go through each resource? Are they just a pile of links that get lost in the likes and reblogs? 

So, from now on, I’m going to share one resource on hockey culture every day. You will read about articles on the toxic hockey twitter, NHL dress code, women in sports media, residential schools and hockey, fan gatekeeping, why it’s not always safe to be openly gay in hockey, scholarly works on the tensions between hockey and Canadian multiculturalism, Candian national identity and the policing of hockey masculinity, listen to the podcasts where Renee Hess, founder of the Black Girl Hockey Club, talks about how she got into hockey by writing Hockey AUs, and many more. I hope through this way we can shine a light on the amazing scholars, jornalists, advocates, podcast creators, and storytellers, opening the conversation on how we as fans can contribute to the change in hockey culture.
