when florence resurrects nate doesn’t get back together with her because neither of them are the same person they once were and they both worked very hard on coming to terms with not being together BUT he does feel like a piece of him that had been missing has returned and she’s truly still his soulmate and best friend and they still have this weird codependent thing going on where they still always team up during camp activities and are always hanging out together and when nate decides to go to new rome university florence and him get in a pretty big emotional dilemma because she doesn’t want to go but she also doesn’t want to be without him and vice versa and that’s truly the moment where they have to learn how to exist without each other 24/7 again

#there’s just NO ONE who will ever understand nate the way florence does #there’s NO ONE who’s been through all he’s been through #who knows how he was then and how he is now #they love each other so so so much even when that love isn’t necessarily romantic anymore #she comes back to life and only then he actually starts breathing again for the first time in 50+ yrs #he can bicker with her and laugh and cry and be vulnerable #bc he’s been that for years #she was his first friend his first love his first everything #idk i’m emotional abt them #i write florence on my multi @taroet for those of u who don’t know x

no matter how hard he tries,    nathaniel doesn’t quite manage to understand why emily wanted to get him to laugh so badly,    yet even he had to admit that she was succeeding in her puzzling quest.   the wisps of a smile still linger on his lips,     even as he tries to fashion his face into a more neutral expression.   "   i have no idea what you’re talking about.     "       it had been so long since he felt the freedom to let go,   to be the carefree kid he had one time been,   that it felt almost alien to him now.    he tries to keep hold of a safety net that never even existed in the first place,  just to keep some semblance of control.   if he lets himself go completely,   allows himself to be swept up in the joy and the frivolity,     he’s afraid he’ll let things slip that he shouldn’t.   ⸺ let’s her in when that only means hurt.   "      that was merely a twitch of my lips at best.    are you sure you didn’t hit your head during sword practice?    you may need to get that checked out.     "     his tone remains serious,   but it’s like something has broken inside of him,   for it’s impossible to keep his face in a stoic expression.  blue eyes sparkle as his gaze sweeps over the rosy hue blooming on her cheeks,    the corners of his mouth tilted upwards.   he can’t help himself,    basking in the feeling for as long as the gods allow him.

present nate is quite different from past nate in the sense that this current version of him is relatively stoic and tense while past nate was laughter loving and extroverted... i mean, even then he struggled because of the war and the overwhelming responsibility of winning a battle, of being a leader, but he still had his soft teenage boy moments!! yet now he’s grown up and he’s seen so much and had to give up so much he doesn’t really find the joy in most things anymore? he’s still charismatic with strangers but when it comes to actual relationships/friendships he closes off and it takes a bit for him to be able to let go of those inhibitions and to truly open up

fun little tidbit is that nate is a pretty good pilot

#he can technically fly himself being a son of zeus and all #but during the war he learned how to fly a plane #and he became pretty good at it (: also just rlly loves it

the thing about nate is that while he pretends not to love attention and glory and praise he's still a son of zeus? he thrives on those things, which is something he learned during the war, but also something he had to let go off for the sake of survival when he came to camp half blood. it's really difficult for him to keep to the shadows, to keep to himself and pretend to be anything other than extraordinary. he has the arrogance of a god, which he hates. but it's there. no matter how much he tries to fight it. no matter how much he has to hide and pretend it doesn't exist. when the secret of his parentage is revealed, part of him is relieved not just because he no longer has to lie, but also because he knows he doesn't have to hold back anymore, which also means people will most likely look at him with awe again, something he has missed ever since he came to camp. his mother always made him feel special and during the war he had such an important role and then after he was basically treated as a god for fifty plus years, only for him to arrive in a place where he had to pretend like he was only average at best. it's still definitely something he struggles with, especially as his distaste for the gods and the mythological world grows, but it's something that never quite leaves him and something that he will always keep fighting against...
