I have to give props to the boys for seeing their mistake and almost immediately fixing it, but it’s also hilarious that this how they learned poor people do in fact exist.

sometime yesterday people on reddit figured out that the new watcher entertainment platform is not a website they have full creative control over (as implied in their video) but instead is from Vimeo OTT. this is why their new platform looks identical to dropout's. vimeo very likely just has a couple templates you pick from and they picked the same one.
this is FASCINATING to me for a few reasons:
it's not unusual for a company to obfuscate how their new web product is built out. "we're using vimeo's content paywall platform" is not nearly as impressive of a statement as "we're launching our own subscription service." this decision sometimes blows up in a company's face though. in this instance, being more candid about the process probably would have helped to mitigate the blowback, because vimeo could have been pinned by the audience as the evil scapegoat company and people wouldn't be feeling stupid when they create accounts and realize all the videos are hosted on vimeo. it also explains why they encouraged password sharing but their subs limit playing videos on more than three devices. it's just a function of the platform they don't control and didn't think about it when they said that.
i really wonder if they made this decision entirely on their own, or if vimeo has recruiters out there trying to make their platform bigger. obviously the watcher guys are responsible for this decision either way, but it sure would explain a lot about why they jumped to this solution to make more money if they had someone at vimeo pitching it to them.
how fucking funny is it that they posted a dramatic "goodbye youtube" video talking about wanting more control and wanting their own special platform just to go to youtube's direct competitor. lol

When this crashes and burns I don't wanna hear the defenders blaming the critics 💀 they could've improved the patron, sold better merch, sold dvd copies of their shows, downsized, literally anything besides alienate a majority of their fanbase

Guys, the more I think about it, the more I fear that they simply won't care about our input. Like shane and ryan, both went to school for filmography, and they've always wanted to make TV quality content. Every pod, they talk about some movie or other piece of film media. They love it. The yellow and blue text has always been enough for us, yes, but I worry that it will never be enough for them. Our devotion is irrelevant. It just really sucks that their values and goals don't seem to align with ours.

Do I feel bad about how mean some of the Watcher comments are? Ah, sort of.
But mainly when I see people posting things like 'I no longer have to pretend that anything they did on Watcher was as good as Unsolved' I'm struck by how it just shows that people followed them, and stuck with them, out of love, loyalty and respect. So when the illusion of those feelings being mutual was shattered well, this is basically post-divorce honesty hour. It's the paraosocial relationship break up equivalent of 'I never really liked your apple pie.'

i am seeing all of the criticism of watchertv (and agreeing of course - it's entirely tone deaf and un-conducive among other things) but i feel as though the attitude i am seeing from a lot of people online involve absolving shane entirely, saying things like, "shane blink twice if they made you do this!" "shane "eat the rich" would never allow this!" "he was forced into this!" and redirecting all of the blame unto ryan and steven - mostly steven - saying that steven is the "ned fulmer of watcher" (wild thing to say) and delegating the responsibility of this decision entirely onto the two of them, and i cannot help but feel like there is an undeniable racial undertone to this rather vitrolic pivot. i understand being a fan of shane - i myself was a proud shaniac! - but i plead that we be conscious about woobifying an adult man who - though could have very well opposed the decision - was still one of the three ceos who okayed it! nothing is gained from scapegoating the two asian men and relinquishing the white one for the hate that this business venture is garnering. please, by all means, continue to criticize, but if you are, do it tastefully, and be careful with insinuations - especially without knowing the intricacies of the situation (and even if/when we do know something. criticism should never come from veiled bigotry) ! just because the property itself is shifting rather horribly doesn't mean we as watcherinas need to turn our community toxic <33

Seeing a lot of people here on tumblr posting about how we should support Watcher and their dreams —
No.
They are a business, we are customers. We watched Ryan and Shane for Ryan and Shane. If they want to make absurdly expensive TV shows about other people, yes, that’s their right, and yes, good for them, but no, we’re not coming with them.
Good luck building up a whole new user base in a global economic crisis, fellas. 👍

Okay can we stop acting like Shane and Ryan are hostages? They are grown men and this is their company too. Even if Steven is the driving force, they are supporting this with their full chests. Ryan said it’s the “right thing to do” and Shane had the professor say “ well why not?” Which is every bit as tone deaf as Steves “ everyone and anyone can afford it”

AITA for wanting my fiancé to focus more on me than on his family?
Last year I got engage to the man of my dream, a real tale of star-crossed lovers, he's wise, loyal and loving. For the longest I thought it be long distance at best, but circumstance led him to immigrate and move in with me (To be honest it was relate to some health issues he was having, the place he's from has terrible healthcare and it's likely he would have died, but our romance existed long before that)
I hold a very stressful high stake job me made worst that a lot of people (INCLUDING MY OWN SISTER!) find our interracial relationship repugnant. While it has made my life harder, but he's always there to support me and he tries to make better things all the time.
However, I find my patience to be tested as of late. He keep getting message from his homeland apparently there's some crisis. He doesn't know or at least doesn't me give the details, but he's already ready to leave . I always had the impression that the place was always very dangerous, but for some reason this time it's worst than ever. I'm scared that if he leave I might never see him again. A former political activist is bound to get into trouble.
He has adopted kids that stayed there, mind you they are adult and he told me when we got engage that they were old enough to take care of things on their own, but each time I see them they always seem embroil in some sort of drama and once one of them got involved in a MASSIVE vandalism incident (we were very lucky nobody died when that happen). I never had great relationship with them, we often got into conflict during our former meeting. I don't think they make him happy.
I know he wants to do the right thing, but I feel he should stay with me. He'd be safer and happier.
So am I the asshole?

this book is so clearly designed for people who have not experienced a decade plus of high dosage uninterrupted tumblr poisoning because to me this whole section reads somewhat like “enjoyers of food and beverages may be surprised to hear about ‘bread’ and ‘water’”

“vampirism is too romanticized these days” damn that’s crazy. I’m romanticizing it even more now though because you’re whining like this
