“Isnt it funny..”
Aubrey whispers out into the stale air,
“…how you’re meant to live your whole entire life preparing to die?”
Sunny blinked. He wasn’t sure what he was listening to. The sunlight shattering through faraway town's local church windows washed over Aubrey’s eyelashes as she stared at the ground.
“I mean in religion.”
“Go on.” sunny murmured.
“Well-“ Aubrey said, cocking her head back against the pew. She looked up.
“You’re meant to confess your sins so that you’re ready to die. but that feels impossible.
Humans live their whole entire lives doing the wrong thing. Making mistakes. Regrets. Wishing we could just wake up and do it all differently. And we’re meant to leave all of that behind before we die- that's what religion is. Preparing to die.”
Sunny dropped his shoulders, letting his head drop back onto the pew too, right next to Aubrey’s. With his hands at his sides like this, he could almost feel his fingers brush with hers.
“Are you ready to die?” He found himself saying.
There was a silence.
Sunny was afraid he might have said the wrong thing.
“No.”
Sunny shifted his head to glance at her. Aubrey shifted her eyes, ever so slightly, so that they met his.
“Ive got more mistakes to make.” She said. Then she moved her elbow, just a little, just enough so that she could brush her hand against his.
The feeling sent shockwaves through his entire arm.
“Are you?”
Sunny though for a moment,
There was a time in his life where he wouldn’t hesitate. Respond with yes, because he was the worst person he knew, that peace was a hoax, and what is atonement if he knows he’s going to hell anyway. That being forgiven for your sins is all a lie to make bad people feel better. And that he was horrible. A horrible, horrible human being. Unworthy, undeserving, and that at the very least, he’d do the oxygen on this earth a service by just. Dying.
Why hope if there's no good to hope for.
But now was not then.
After a long pause, he responded.
“No.” he whispered, as if he wanted no one else- not even the angels- to hear him. except from Aubrey.
“Ive got a few things id like to make up for.” He said in a dry voice. The words left his mouth, absent-mindedly, as if they weren’t his own. He found it hard to believe they were his to begin with.
But Aubrey smiled. A warm, sweet, beautiful smile.
A rarity, one sunny wished in his mind was reserved for him and only him.
With her head turned towards him now, the sun beat off her pink hair in a way that made her look like a ghost. An apparition, an illusion, maybe. Too good to be true, sunny thought.
The sun made it look like an angel was sitting right next to him.
Funny how the thought of ghosts didn’t scare him so much anymore.
Shifting closer, Aubrey linked her pinky finger with Sunny’s. Her smile didn’t falter, not once, and a sun-kissed flush had crept onto the apples of her cheeks. Like rose petals.
“Good.” she whispered back at him, like an intimate response to his own, wispy words. Like a quiet understanding. it told him now, that she only wanted him to hear.
That,
She only really wanted him.
