Talk
BIO50}hotel and the Museum as a Participatory Platform
Jan Boelen, Alessandro Fonte, Silvia Susanna
Oct 20th 2018 | 4 pm
Motel Win-win / TAC Eindhoven
Dutch Design Week
Can cultural exchange be seen as a new currency? In an interactive talk, Silvia Susanna and Alessandro Fonte together with Jan Boelen will investigate several issues including the design as negotiation and the museum as an underused infrastructure. They will also reflect on the legacy of BIO50 in relation to BIO50}hotel and the research platform nanotourism. Alessandro and Silvia explored museum as a participatory platform with their exhibition hotel model BIO50}hotel that provided hospitality within the exhibition space in exchange for cultural contribution. The project was established at BIO50, the 24th Biennial of Design Ljubljana, curated by Jan Boelen.

“It’s probably a form of design exhibition that a lot of visitors will not expect. But one that is very engaging once you start looking and start getting into the projects,” says Konstantin Grcic in the video accompanying the announcement of the Ljubljana Biennale intitled Bio 50 (until 7 December). Together with Alice Rawsthorn and Saša J. Mächtig, Grcic was part of the jury that awarded the exhibition’s highest honour, the Best Collaboration Award, to Nanotourism, a project to revitalize the Slovenian tourism industry by exploiting the disciplinary flexibility and collaborative platforms of design, starting with micro-scale rethinking of graphics, communication and services. (Marco Sammicheli review on Abitare).

The exhibited projects present a well-received variety of new approaches and aspects of challenges of everyday life, but the biggest value of the projects lies in the learning processes and the continuation of collaborations. This attitude, the processes and the communication of the participants are also documented in the rather massive catalogue of the biennial. (HEINI LEHTINEN for helsinki design week)

This is Sponge – day 3
We can finally provide hot water to make coffe and tea, it is behind the door for the underground toilets, there is a water dispenser. We’ve passed it a hundred times during these days and we never noticed it had a faulty red lever for fresh boiling water. Gianluca is then able to bring Giovanna and Giovanni a “good morning” cup of coffee. Time passes by peacefully between a precious smile from Helena and the discovery of the Fužine neighborhood, wandering in a quest for a market, through a wide range of greys between ground and sky. In the small market we found a couple of traditional Christmans loaf of bread, quite unusual for us, resembling a human shape, fully equipped with penis and poppy seeds to recall the pubis.
It’s almost 3 pm, we spend some more time decompressing our minds watching a really trash “fiction” written and directed by a mature popular italian showgirl, Lory Del Santo, and promptly at 4 o’clock the first artists of today’s portfolio screening session is sitting in front of us.
Rok Bogtaj, direct man of few words, author of a huge monumental red-headed pin that we easily imagine translated in fuchsia on the top of the hill of Casa Sponge. We close the session with the young artist Maša Gala.
Then we are captivated by our own In Corpo documentaries, they show where we began and what we became. The perfomance review begins with Mastica e sputa by Rita Vitali Rosati, that opened our first year of activity, and ends with Prima viene la spina by Francesca Romana Pinzari, the last performance done at Casa Sponge. In the middle, Sense 1+1, the coral performance by Tiziana Contino, Joy Coroner (a.k.a. Domenico Buzzetti), Giovanni himself, Roberto Paci Dalò and Monalisa Tina; Ilva by Filippo Riniolo and Opening by Isabella Pers. Our project for BIO50 ends with Gianluca’s performance Memoria #1, he’s been working for two days to take control of the space of the chapel and of himself as well in total silence. Tonight the light is dim, the public white, it’s a not easy trial for him. Anyway we find this evolution of his former perfomance Lavinia quite effective.
Tonight more than ever we lived the museum. After being interviewed by Silvia and Alessandro and making an analysis of our presence at the Biennial we cleverly turned the tables. A few words and an important debate comes out, about how can art change the urban and social structure. As always, the closing is around a table, and our residency at MAO ends eating home delivered slovenian food, in our lower castle!

This is Sponge – day 2
Like in all other museums at MAO they clean up. Our awakening is accompanied by the entrance of the clearing lady and her gentle vacuum cleaner. Actually she is respectful, she lights up the room carefully leaving the spotlights on our beds switched off. It’s Helena (don’t know if it’s spelled like this), the receptionist, that promptly enters stealthily and lights up everything, two hours earlier than the scheduled time… It’s worth a word on Helena: it’s hard to make a smile out of her – even harder to see her without a leopard-skin shirt on. Actually this morning it is striped, surely that’s a good sign.
Our living the museum today is characterized by a massive presence of kids, classes and public, interested by seeing us resting or working behind the rough wooden, apparently improvised desk.
We dedicate the afternoon to the inspection of the space for tomorrow’s performance and to the first session of portfolio screening, at LP Bar downtown. Here comes the greatest surprise, we expect to meet young slovenian artists but it doesn’t go exactly like that. The first is Matej Andraz Vogrincic (Lubiana, 1970) - we rember his extraordinary installation “Dressed House”in Campo Santa Margherita, Venice, curated by Aurora Fonda in 1999 at the Biennale directed by Harald Szeemann. An overview of monumental site specific installation, all built in collaboration with the locals of the places he goes to, including the australian desert natives. Shawnette Poe (Warsaw 1980) conclude our daily discoveries, with painting that magically becomes performance. We get out of the LP Bar visually stroke, but then is the city herself that diverts us from poetry. It’s tradition that today, december 3rd, all the Christmas lights have to be turned on, and so it is!

This is Sponge – day 1
We can’t do without sharing and telling our experience, but “Dear diary…” sounds obsolete so we won’t begin that way. We are in Ljubljana, Slovenia, as last guests at BIO50 }hotel, at the 24th Biennial of Architecture and Design. A rare art project, extraordinarily contemporary, aiming to fully explore the very sense of relationship. Artists, architects, or intellectuals have been each time asked to inhabit the MAO – Museum of Architecture and Design, to bring their creativity and employ it in the rooms to customise the space.
We arrive in Ljubljana on Monday 1st december at 8 pm, surely the weather is not at all like Trieste – at least 15° colder, definitely winter time! and we realise it’s december at last. We meet Alessandro Fonte who, together with Silvia Susanna, ideated and curated the project. Accompanied by a happily rockish soundtrack we reach by taxi our noble dwelling, the Fuzine Castle, in the outskirts of the city. The museum is closed but we get in, and after the check-in (we’re hotel guests after all!) our four-days stay begins.
Today, Tuesday 2nd december has been the actual first day. Waking up has been funny, with the caretaker lighting up the rooms and the visitors coming in. An old Luigi Tenco’s song accompanied our morning stretching and caught the attention of a group of italian visitors. “Is anybody LIVING here?”, “Yes, us!”.
