As a brown trans boy it sucked so badly to watch those “gender envy” slides on tik tok and see only white boys with fluffy hair. It was a little thing but it made me feel invisible even in my own community. So these are men that look like me and give me gender envy. just had the realisation that white ignorance as white innocence has to be shored up and maintained not only through a process of avoidance (avoiding racialised people, or at least personal discussion with them, in your personal life; not reading certain things, &c.) but also through a process of intentional forgetting (if you’ve seen or heard anything acknowledging the extent and nature of racism, forget it right away. next time you are confronted with someone or something that evidences the extent and nature of racism, insist that it is news to you and that “you thought we had gotten rid of that kind of thing”)
