I posted a video of this formation earlier. It was hard when I touched it. This tunnel has a smell of petroleum and signs of asphalt seepage or something similar. I've never experienced it in any tunnel before probably because this is the oldest I've been in to date (1914). There are older tunnels, however but certain factors still need to occur in order create the formations found in this tunnel. I have to say that coming across weird things like this is one of the reasons why I enjoy BelowLA. We are in an alien environment finding things unusual to the world above. Bricks are never used in present day storm drain construction (at least not in Los Angeles). They used bricks in the 1910s and 1920s and a bit into the 1930s (as far as I have learned). Other tunnel inlets bring water to the main channel. The mystery.... Why are these closed off? What happened in the past which brought its closure? What is behind the bricks? There's one observation I've made over the years riding through these tunnels below Los Angeles. I do not believe the original Builders of the storm drain system envisioned the need to clean it 100 years after it was built. What kind of a task can you think it would take to get this deep into a tunnel and clean out the collected debris the last one hundred years? This particular tunnel here has about a foot of dirt collected on the bottom. With that stated further up the tunnel there may very well be a section that is filled almost to capacity with debris. As water continues to enter the tunnel it moves erodes this built up debris creating its own stream path, hence, an underground stream.
