A witness who was at the mosque during the shooting has spoken to TVNZ and says that the shooting lasted for about 20 minutes and systematically went through the mosque, going from room to room targeting people.

At 1:40pm a gunman entered the Masjid Al Noor Mosque in central Christchurch and opened fire

There are reports of casualties with local media are reporting some people have died, with witnesses saying they saw “lots of bodies” on the ground, though police have not confirmed the number of those injured or dead.

This is an active shooter situation, with police responding to more gunshots fired at other locations across the city.

The city remains under lockdown, with central Christchurch evacuated, children who were participating in the climate strikes were evacuated, schools are under lockdown.

Police have confirmed to the Guardian that there is a bomb in a car that has crashed on Strickland Street in the city. People are being evacuated from the area.

Fizzy was such an outspoken, lovely girl, who not only loved her family, but who dreamt about her own big family, following her mom’s path. She was not afraid to call things as she saw them. She called people out for bullying and stupidity, she encouraged her followers to dream big and put mental health issues in the open so that we feel that no one has to feel stupid for struggling. She was 18! years old, and sometimes in her words wiser than most people my age.

I never met her, nor knew her personally, but I genuinely am heartbroken.

Exactly how I feel. Also it’s just incredible how even though I’ve never met Fizzy or the rest of the family I feel so emotional. Can’t get them off my mind. Just want to give them all a hug, especially the younger siblings 😭

one direction got me through one of the worst years of my entire life, like, ‘actively planning how i’m gonna kill myself’ bad, and so i’m always going to be very emotionally indebted to them and i’ll never be embarrassed about how much i care for them. knowing one member is going through one tragedy after another hurts me as someone who cares for him and who has relied on him to get through my own shit.

i guess i’m posting about this because a lot of the time people seem embarrassed to care so much about people they don’t know and we have to frame our grief as something silly or irrational when they pass/when something bad happens to them but like… why should loving someone because they helped you be embarrassing?

empathy and caring about another person isn’t embarrassing. it’s okay to share in someone else’s grief, even if it doesn’t feel like your own. don’t ever deny yourself the grief you are feeling because you feel like it’s shameful to be sad.

it’s not. 

right now i’m crying because a celebrity i never met lost his sister. because i care about him. because human loss in general is fucking shitty and awful. and because it sucks to know that no one deserves to be in pain and yet it is inevitable and there’s nothing we can do to fix it–that’s a lot to cope with.

so idk… just keep this in mind. inevitably, we will all feel like an outsider and feel sadness for something that doesn’t feel like its “ours” to feel sad about it. and i’m saying it’s okay to feel that grief and to not deny yourself your feelings. it’s okay to ache because you can’t do anything in the wake of someone else’s loss. it’s okay to feel and hurt and struggle withs omething like this.
