Zuko finds out Katara was parentified from the age of eight and was a single mom friend of three until he stumbled into the position of gaang dad friend. So when she visits the Fire Nation Zuko dotes on her, making sure her every need is anticipated and catered to. He even goes as far as - to the horror of his council - kneeling to remove her shoes.
Because of this she earns the nickname Lady Katara among the palace staff which she finds amusing but a little confusing. So one day over tea she asks Iroh why they call her that and he explains:
"They're just practicing."
"Why would you need to practice a nickname?"
"Well my dear, they expect that within a few years Fire will preceed it."
And that's about when Katara chokes on her tea.

So, we all love Gale’s mirror image/simulacrum, and how the ‘certain measure of Gale’s personality’ that he retains is Gale’s sweet, dorky charm…but is Gale himself aware of this?
I don’t believe we ever see Gale actually interact with his mirror image, as it always appears as a replacement when Gale is elsewhere.
It’s possible Gale has always just assumed he’s created this 100% straightforward, serious mirror image who radiates scholarly intelligence…because surely, that’s the aspect of his personality that it would pull from, right?
Imagine if one night, after Gale and Tav are married and living in Waterdeep, they start reminiscing about their romance. Tav brings up their first night together, and mentions how surprised they were to see Gale’s mirror image standing in his place at camp.
Gale is pleased, and says with a gentle laugh that he hopes Tav wasn’t too intimidated by his simulacrum’s stoic nature.
To which Tav responds oh no, not at all! They loved how adorable he was, and they still remember the cute pose he did to represent Gale’s personality!
Gale (perplexed): …darling, whatever do you mean? What pose…?
Cue Tav, perfectly miming this:

3 I Love Sally Jackson. This Woman Is A Godsend.
Chapters: 1, 2, 3(You are Here)
“What’s going on?” Percy asked as soon as he opened the door. He was tense, but I’d expected that. It wasn’t often I made a house call. Before I could say anything, though, Apollo cut me off.
“Hello, Percy Jackson.” He started, “It’s Apollo, I’m sure you remember me.”
Percy grimaced. As I’d thought, he wasn’t thrilled about a god showing up on his doorstep. I shook my head.
“Long story short, Apollo got turned mortal and I need help getting him and another demigod, Meg, to camp.” I told Percy.
“You mean the beat up teenager look isn’t a disguise?” Percy asked, relenting and letting us inside.
“He got beat up and almost mugged after he fell into the dumpster outside my window.” I explained. “We also might be being followed so I suggest we move quickly.”
“Followed by what?” Percy glanced over my shoulder, eyes softening a bit when he saw Meg. She didn’t seem much older than Percy was when he went to camp the first time, if she was any older at all.
“Spirits of some kind. I didn’t get a good enough look to tell what kind.” I said. Sally came around the kitchen counter. Guilt settled in my stomach. I’d completely forgotten that Sally was heavily pregnant with Percy’s half sister. If I’d remembered, I’d have looked for a different way to get these two to camp.
“Sacred Sibyl!” Apollo cried, clearly alarmed, “Madam, there is something wrong with your midsection!”
I smacked Apollo in the arm.
“She's pregnant, moron.” I snapped. Sally was more good natured about the comment than I was. She just looked at her belly and told Apollo.
“Well, I’m seven months pregnant, to be exact.”
“How can you bear it?” Apollo asked, looking ready to cry for her. “My mother, Leto, suffered through a long pregnancy, but only because Hera cursed her. Are you cursed?”
I rolled my eyes. I had met Leto only once but she was a very nice woman. I’d be lying if I said that a big reason that I was helping Apollo now wasn’t to repay her for the help she gave me during my own quest a few years back. Percy stepped up to Apollo’s side.
“Um, Apollo? She’s not cursed. And could you not mention Hera?” Percy said.
“You poor woman.” Apollo shook his head as he talked. “A goddess would never allow herself to be so encumbered. She would give birth as soon as she felt like it.”
“That must be nice.” Sally agreed. Remembering my step-mother’s struggles with late term pregnancy when she was pregnant with my little sister, Alya, I made a mental note to send Percy home with some magical remedies for Sally’s soreness and such before he left camp for home. Percy coughed.
“So, anyway. Mom, this is Apollo and his friend Meg. You already know Celeste. Guys, this is my mom.”
“Call me Sally.” She smiled then narrowed her eyes when she saw his busted nose. “Dear, that looks painful. What happened?”
Apollo opened his mouth to explain but choked up before he could get anything out. I looked at him in concern. Apollo being lost for words wasn’t normal if what Leto had told me about her son was to be believed.
“He ran into some trouble on the way here.” I said, vaguely.
“Tell you what,” Sally said, giving Apollo a comforting pat on the shoulder. “Percy can help you get bandaged and cleaned up.”
“I can?” Percy asked. Sally gave him an eyebrow raise silently saying ‘oh yes you will’.
“There’s a first-aid kit in your bathroom, sweetheart. Apollo can take a shower, then wear your extra clothes. You two are about the same size.” Sally instructed.
“That,” Percy said, “is truly depressing.”
Sally then went to inspect Meg. As usual, Sally’s expression was gentle and reassuring, but with a definite undertone of worry. I could definitely see why. Meg was dirty with her odd clothing choice of green dress, yellow leggings and red shoes. She kinda looked like an upside down traffic light.
“I have some clothes that might fit you, dear.” Sally said. “Pre-pregnancy clothes, of course. Let’s get you cleaned up. Then we’ll get you something to eat.”
“I like food.” Meg muttered. She got like that when people tried taking care of her. It was either meek embarrassment or stubborn refusal that she needed help. Sally laughed.
“Well, we have that in common. Percy, you take Apollo. We’ll meet you back here in a while. Celeste, make yourself at home. You’re welcome to anything in the kitchen.”
“Thank you, Sally.” I said. I moved out of the way and sat on the couch. I sighed, relaxing for the first time since finding Apollo in the alley.
While waiting, I idly looked at my reflection in the window. Long black hair braided and tossed over my shoulder and my purplish blue eyes stared back at me. My father kept a potted blue hyacinth in his office, saying that he did so because their color reminded him of my eyes. I didn’t look like my father at all and a lot of people questioned if I was even his. After meeting Hecate, my mother, it became clear why. I had her dark hair and pale complexion in contrast to my father’s strawberry blonde hair and tan skin.
I was snapped out of my thoughts by Sally and Meg walking in. Meg joined me on the couch. Sally had managed to put Meg in an outfit that actually looked cohesive aside from Meg’s red shoes. Sally had also cleaned Meg’s face and glasses. Apollo and Percy weren’t far behind. Percy had given Apollo a pair of pants and a Led Zeppelin t-shirt, a picture of Icarus falling from the sky. I silently wondered if it was a subtle joke on Percy’s part.
Apollo choked back a sob upon seeing Meg. I idly wondered why. Maybe she reminded him of a dryad he’d been fond of? She certainly looked the part at the moment.
“Do I look that bad?” Meg said, pouting.
“No, no,” Apollo struggled to get the words out, “It’s just…”
Apollo turned away from her. I could practically feel his sadness and discomfort.
“You look fine, Meg.” I said, giving Apollo an out of this conversation.
“Well,” Sally said with forced cheeriness. “How about I make some lunch while you four… talk.”
She gave Percy a worried look, then headed to the kitchen, holding her belly protectively.
“Percy, your mom is so normal.” Meg said, wistfully.
“Thanks, I guess.” Percy said. He picked up a stack of test preparation manuals from the coffee table and chucked them aside in irritation.
“I see you like to study,” Apollo said, “Well done.”
Percy snorted.
“I hate to study. I’ve been guaranteed admission with a full scholarship to New Rome University, but they’re still requiring me to pass all my high school courses and score well on my SAT. Can you believe that? Not to mention I have to pass the DSTOMP.”
“The what?” Meg asked.
“An exam for Roman demigods,” Apollo explained. “The Demigod Standard Test of Mad Powers.”
“Stupid name,” I muttered. “The least they could do is translate it into something we can read.”
“That’s what it stands for?” Percy frowned.
“I should know. I wrote the music and poetry analysis sections.” Apollo said, proudly.
“I will never forgive you for that,” Percy said, seriously. Meg swung her feet.
“So you’re a demigod? Like me and Celeste?” She asked.
“Like Celeste and I,” Apollo corrected. Meg stuck her tongue out at him.
“Afraid so.” Percy sighed and sank into the armchair, leaving Apollo to squish on the couch next to Meg and I. “My dad is the godly one- Poseidon. What about your parents?”
Meg froze. Avoiding eye contact by studying her hands as though they had suddenly become the most interesting thing in the room.
“Never knew them… much.” Was all she said. Percy hesitated.
“Foster home? Stepparents?”
Meg shifted uncomfortably, practically curling up on herself. Percy looked at me, questioningly. I shook my head and motioned for him to stop. I gently rubbed Meg’s arm to comfort her. She jumped a bit when I touched her. Percy nodded. He raised his hands.
“Sorry. Didn’t mean to pry.” Percy turned his gaze to Apollo. “So, how’d you guys meet? I know Celeste found you, but ya know…”
I let Apollo tell the story, and didn’t bother correcting his exaggerations. I kept my eyes on Meg. She leaned into me for comfort and I put an arm around her, hoping I could help her feel more secure. It took awhile, but she relaxed a bit and no longer looked like she wanted to run. Just as Apollo was finishing the story, Sally came in. She set down a bowl of tortilla chips, and a casserole dish filled with a layered dip.
“I’ll be back with the sandwiches,” she said. “But I had some leftover seven layer dip.”
“Yum.” Percy immediately dug into the dip with a tortilla chip. “She’s kinda famous for this, guys.”
Sally ruffled her son’s hair.
“There’s guacamole, sour cream, refried beans, salsa-” Apollo cut Sally off, looking at her in wonder.
“Seven layers? You knew seven is my sacred number? You invented this for me?”
Sally wiped her hands on her apron and smiled, confused.
“Well, actually,” She said. “I can’t take credit-”
“You are too modest!” Apollo said, then tried some of the dip. His face lit up. An expected reaction to Sally’s food, I’d never had anything she made that I didn’t like.
“You will have immortal fame for this, Sally Jackson!” Apollo told her. I stifled a chuckle at his theatrics.
“That’s sweet.” Sally pointed to the kitchen after speaking. “I’ll be right back.”
Soon, Sally came back with sandwiches and banana smoothies. Needless to say, we were very happy with everything. Meg shoved food into her face at an alarming speed, looking like a chipmunk by the time she paused to chew. After we ate our fill, Apollo spoke again.
“Percy,” He said, “your mom is awesome.”
“She is an absolute blessing.” I agreed.
“I know, right?” Percy said, he finished his smoothie. “So back to your story… You have to be Meg’s servant now? You guys barely know each other.”
“Barely is generous.” Apollo said, bitterly. “Nevertheless, yes. My fate is now linked with young McCaffery.”
“We are cooperating.” Meg insisted. I rolled my eyes. This girl was having way too much fun with this. Percy fished Riptide from his pocket, tapping the pen against his knee.
“And this whole being-turned-into-a-mortal-thing…” Percy started, “you’ve done it twice before?”
“Not by choice,” Apollo said. “The first time, we had a little rebellion in Olympus. We tried to overthrow Zeus.”
“I can’t imagine that went well.” I said. Percy winced.
“I got most of the blame, naturally. Oh, and Poseidon. We were both cast down to earth as mortals, forced to serve Laomedon, the king of Troy. He was a harsh master. He even refused to pay us for our work!” Apollo explained. Meg nearly choked on her sandwich.
“I have to pay you?” she asked.
“Never fear,” Apollo assured her. “I won’t be presenting you with a bill. But as I was saying, the second time I became mortal, Zeus got mad because I killed some of his Cyclops.”
“Not cool,” Percy commented, frowning. “My brother is a Cyclops.”
“These were wicked Cyclops!” Apollo protested. “They made the lightning bolt that killed one of my sons!”
“To be fair, it’s not like he could directly attack Zeus for killing Asclepius.” I pointed out to Percy. He just grimaced and rolled his eyes.
“Percy’s brother is a Cyclops? That’s crazy!” Meg said, bouncing up and down.
“Most Cyclops are sons of Poseidon. Though, most of them don’t have as good a temperament as Tyson.” I told her. Apollo took a deep breath, clearly annoyed at us getting off topic.
“At any rate,” Apollo stopped us before we could wander farther off topic. “I was bound to Admetus, the king of Thessaly. He was a kind master. I liked him so much, I made all his cows have twin calves?”
“Can I have baby cows?” Meg asked.
“Meg, honey, you have nowhere to put a baby cow. Or the means to take care of one.” I said.
“Guys,” Percy interrupted. “So, just to recap, you have to be Meg’s servant for…?”
“Some unknown amount of time,” Apollo answered. “Probably a year. Possibly more.”
“And during that time-”
“I will undoubtedly face many trials and hardships.”
“Like getting me my cows,” Meg said. Apollo gritted his teeth.
“What those trials will be, I do not yet know.” Apollo continued. “But if I suffer through them and prove I am worthy, Zeus will forgive me and allow me to become a god again.”
Percy and I shared a doubtful look. Zeus wasn’t known for his mercy, and since Apollo had gone through this twice before, I wasn’t optimistic about his chances.
“Need to get my bearings,” Apollo said. “Once we get to Camp Half-Blood, I can consult with Chiron. I can figure out which of my godly powers remain with me in this mortal form.”
“If any.” Percy said.
“Let’s think positive.” Apollo said nervously.
“We should go.” I interject, “I don’t want whatever was following us sniffing around your apartment too much.”
“Yeah, okay.” Percy nods and gets up. I grabbed my bag and ushered Meg and Apollo toward the door. As we were going, Sally walked in with a plate of freshly baked blue chocolate chip cookies.
“Mom, don’t freak,” Percy started.
“I hate it when you say that.” Sally sighed.
“I’m just going to take these three to camp. That’s all. I’ll be right back.”
“I think I’ve heard that before.”
“I promise.”
Sally looked at Meg, Apollo and I. Her expression softened, her kindness and selflessness outweighing her worry for son.
“All right,” Sally relented. “Be careful. It was lovely meeting you. Please try not to die.”
Percy kissed his mom on the cheek and reached for the cookies. However, she moved the plate away.
“Oh no,” Sally said. “Celeste, Apollo and Meg can have one, but I’m keeping the rest hostage until you get back safely. And do hurry, dear. It would be a shame if Paul ate them all when he gets home.”
Percy’s expression turned grim. He turned to us.
“You hear that guy?” He said. “A batch of cookies is depending on me. If you get me killed on the way to camp, I am going to be seriously ticked off.”

Chapter 2 This Is Like Herding Cats
Chapter; 1, 2(You are Here), 3
After leaving the building, I peaked down the alley.
“Guys, let’s go.” I called Apollo and Meg. Meg came skipping up to me with Apollo glumly following behind her. I raised an eyebrow when I saw Meg quickly try tucking something out of my sight.
“Meg, give Apollo back his wallet.” I said. Meg pouted. She tossed the leather wallet back at Apollo. It hit his forehead and he fumbled a moment before catching it. Meg snickered.
“His ID says Lester Papadopoulos.” She giggled. Apollo’s face flushed in embarrassment.
“Wow, your dad has a weird sense of humor.” I said.
“An incredibly cruel one.” Apollo said despondently. I fished the dagger from my backpack and handed it to him.
“I may be upset about mortality, but I’m not that depressed.” Apollo said.
“Wha- No!” I yelped, realizing what he meant. “In case we get attacked! So you’re not entirely unarmed.”
“This isn’t exactly my weapon.” Apollo grimaced at it disdainfully. “You don’t have a bow and a quiver of arrows?”
I rolled my eyes. I somehow resisted the urge to smack him upside the head.
“Apollo, sweetie,” I said, annoyance dripping from my voice, “Don’t you think that if I had that, I’d have given it to you? Archery is kind of your thing, but I don’t keep weapons around that I don’t typically use.”
“This is why you should always plan for my needs!” Apollo said. I sighed and waved him off.
“Percy’s place is on the Upper East Side. His family has a car and he has a driver’s license.” I explained and started off in the direction we needed to go. Meg skipped ahead.
“Why don’t you have a license? Aren’t you 17?” Meg asked.
“Yeah, but New York has enough public transport that it’s not usually an issue and Dad drops me off at camp for the summer.” I told her. “Dad is lecturing at the college today, though. He won’t be home until late tonight and Kara took Alya out of state to visit her grandparents.”
“People are staring,” Apollo noted, “Surely my good looks have been retained at least. Or my divine radiance.”
“You stink.” Meg said, “And you look like you’ve been mugged.”
“I was mugged,” Apollo said bitterly, “And also enslaved by a small child.”
“Well, almost mugged.” I commented, “You still have your money.”
“And,” Meg interjected, “It’s not slavery. We are cooperating.”
“Cooperating in the sense that you give orders and I’m forced to follow.” Apollo grumbled.
“Yep!” Meg chirped then pointed Apollo to a storefront window. “You look gross.”
I braced myself for his inevitable freak out. Apollo’s human form wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the ‘perfection’ gods were used to. He looked about 16, dark curly hair, and blue eyes. He was dorkishally cute, but his nose was swollen and bruised. Despite my best effort to clean him up, there was still blood on his face. Apollo leaned closer to the reflection in the window and a look of disgust crossed his face.
“Horrors!” He cried out. “Is that- Is that ACNE?!”
Apollo balled his fisted and shouted at the sky, “Zeus, what have I done to deserve this.”
I felt like I was going to make my eyes sore by the amount of eye rolling I was going to do today. Meg went over and tugged on his sleeve.
“You’re going to get yourself arrested, nutcase.” She said, but Apollo just kept complaining.
“What does it matter? I have been made a teenager, and not even one with perfect skin! I bet I don’t even have…” Apollo stopped short and lifted his shirt. He was bruised to hell, probably from his fall into the dumpster and his beating from Cade and Mikey.
“Oh, no, no, no.” He staggered like he’d been punched again. “Where are my eight pack abs? I always have eight pack abs. I never have love handles. Never in four thousand years!”
I wanted to bang my head into a wall. This was such a dumb thing to complain about, I thought. Meg let out a little snorting laugh, seeming to enjoy his misery.
“Sheesh, crybaby, you’re fine.” She said.
“I’m fat!” Apollo cried.
“You’re average,” I told him, “Normal people don’t have eight pack abs. If you did, you’d look out of place.”
Apollo groaned. Noticing a store security guard glaring at Apollo suspiciously, I grabbed his hand and pulled him further down the street. Meg skipped and cartwheeled ahead of us.
“How is she so calm?” Apollo asked, “Does none of this surprise her?”
Up ahead, Meg shrugged.
“I’ve seen a lot of weird stuff.”
“I’ve also been trying to get her to go to Camp Half-Blood for the last few months.” I told him. “She’s been stubborn about not leaving that alley for whatever reason.”
“What about your family?” Apollo asked, “Or legal guardian, at least.”
“I live in the alley.” Meg said, looking uncomfortable. “Are we almost there yet?”
“Yeah, almost.” I said. Meg changed the subject whenever anyone asked about her family. I didn’t know what was up with her family situation, but she deflected every time it came up. The only time I got a hint that she even had an adult looking after her was when I overheard her talking to a man. When who she was talking to came out from behind the corner, I saw he was a fat man in a gaudy purple suit and a weird, curly neckbeard. Meg had been on edge for days afterwards. Whoever he was, Meg was clearly terrified of him.
As we neared Percy’s apartment, I was snapped out of my thoughts by something shining from my peripheral vision. I whipped around to see what it was. There were these three weird shiny blobs, but given that their forms didn’t seem solid, I guess they were spirits rather than monsters. I walked faster as they ducked out of my view.
“Don’t look, but we’re being followed.” I whispered to Apollo and Meg. I huffed when they both tried to look. I grabbed their heads and turned them back forward despite their protests.
“I said don’t look, dummies.” I sighed as I walked up to the call box and hit the buzzer.
“Yes?” Sally’s voice came through the speaker. I’d only met Percy’s mom a couple times before when Percy went missing and I was trying to help her and Annabeth look for him.
“Sally, it’s Celeste Marinos.” I said, “I need some help. Can we come in?”
There were a pair of voices talking, likely Sally and Percy, but it was too staticy to tell what exactly they were saying. The front door buzzed and I pushed it open.
“Come on,” I said to the others, “Let’s get inside and get out of here.”

Magic and Sunlight
Being involved in both the Second Titan War and the War with Gaia, the last thing I wanted was to get involved in more of the gods problems, but such is the life of a demigod. Especially when a got lands in my dumpster. My bleeding heart is going to get me killed. Welcome to the dumpster fire.
Chapters; 1(You are Here), 2, 3
1 I Adopt a God and a Feral Child
Meeting a god in a dumpster alley was not in my plans for the day. I was studying for my driving test, which was murder on my brain. Studying with ADHD and dyslexia was already hard enough, but with a subject as boring as traffic laws, it was mild torture at best. I was rubbing my temples due to the swimming letters when there was suddenly a loud thud from outside my window. I jumped and immediately slipped my bracelets on my wrists, the Celestial bronze decorated with my mother’s symbol.
Leaning out the window, I frowned in confusion. There was a boy in the dumpster beside the bottom of my fire escape. At first, I thought that maybe he’d fallen from a window or something, but then, that wouldn’t have explained the smoke coming from his body. Given that my mother was in charge of controlling the Mist, I was very good at seeing through it, so I knew this guy wasn’t a monster. He obviously wasn’t human either, so I was cautious as I crawled out the window onto the fire escape.
“No!” The kid cried, “No, it wasn’t! Please!”
Pity and sympathy churned in my chest. Poor kid seemed delirious and was talking to himself. Now that he was conscious, he struggled and pulled himself out of the dumpster. He collapsed onto the asphalt. I carefully started down the fire escape. Whatever was up with this guy, he needed help. The boy from the dumpster fumbled around. I was so distracted that I didn’t notice the two idiots coming down the alley until one of them spoke.
“Hey, Cade, take a look at this loser.” One of them jeered. A blonde and a redhead. The redhead one looked at the wallet the dumpster kid had in his hand and grinned.
“Now, be nice, Mikey. This guy looks friendly enough.” The redhead, Cade, apparently, pulled out a big hunting knife. “In fact, I bet he wants to give us all his money.”
I cursed under my breath and shuffled down the fire escape as fast as I could without slipping. The wet, icy weather of January was not helping that endeavor. The dumpster kid stood up and tried to square his shoulders confidently. His lanky body type and boyish curly hair wasn’t helping whatever intimidation he was going for.
“I am Apollo,” the dumpster kid announced, “You mortals have three choices: offer me tribute, flee, or be destroyed.”
His voice cracked on the word ‘destroyed’. A ball of dread settled in my stomach. If this kid was serious, this was bad. Apollo had disappeared shortly after the Seven had defeated Gaia according to Percy and Annabeth though we hadn’t heard from him for some time before that. Then Olympus went silent AGAIN.
“What do you think, Mikey?” Cade grinned mockingly, “Should we give this guy tribute?”
“Not feeling the tribute, Cade.” Mikey sneered sarcastically, “What are the other options?”
I fiddled with the ladder that was meant to drop to the alley floor. It was rusty so it was stubborn and not unlatching.
“Fleeing?” said Cade.
“Nah,” said Mikey.
“Being destroyed?”
“How about we destroy him instead?” Mikey snorted.
I finally got the latch undone and the ladder dropped with a clang as Cade flipped his knife and caught it by the handle. The muggers glanced at me but quickly decided I wasn’t important.
“I can live with that. After you.” Cade said. The dumpster kid, maybe Apollo, raised his fists. I slid down the ladder.
“I warned you,” said the dumpster kid, “My powers are far beyond your comprehension.”
As soon as Mikey got close enough, Dumpster Kid swung. Unfortunately, Mikey ducked and kicked him in the back. I winced as I heard Dumpster Kid’s head strike the asphalt with a crack.
“Hey!” I shouted. “Back off, jerkface!”
The boys laughed at me. I picked up a nearby loose chunk of broken asphalt and chucked it straight into the side of Mikey’s head. The guy cursed loudly as he crumpled to the floor. I darted over and put myself between Dumpster Kid and Cade. Cade swung the knife at me. His aim was shoddy though and I moved, grabbed his arm and used his unsteadiness from the swing to fling him into the brick wall. After years of fighting monsters, street thugs were relatively easy to deal with. Mikey tried to get up, his head bleeding where I’d hit him with the asphalt, but I stomped on his head before he got far. He lost consciousness. I glanced back at Dumpster Kid, who was sitting on his knees, nose bleeding and swollen, and staring at me with a mixture of confusion and awe.
“You little-” Cade started, but I quickly cut him off with a swift kick to the gut. I kneed his head into the wall which knocked him out too. I turned to Dumpster Kid and picked up the wallet he’d dropped. I handed it to him.
“You okay?” I asked, “Sorry, dumb question. You just got mugged. Of course you’re not okay.”
I grabbed a pocket package of tissues from my back pocket. I kneeled down and tried to clean as much blood from his face as I could. He flinched and blinked rapidly, seemingly just processing what just happened.
“Aphrodite…?” He croaked. I shook my head.
“Nope. Sorry.” I told him. “I’m Celeste.”
“Apollo.” He said. I couldn’t find any trace of a lie. Before I could ask any more questions, I was interrupted by a shout.
“Hey!” I looked up to see Meg. She scrambled down a fire escape. Meg was a kid who seemed homeless but hung around the alley a lot. I’d slowly gotten Meg to like me, mostly through offering her food. Kinda the same way you’d tame a feral cat.
“He fell in MY alley!” Meg whined, “Whatever he has is mine!”
I sighed.
“Meg, I just stopped the guy from getting mugged,” I said, “Please don’t start anything.”
I didn’t see Meg kick the apple but it smacked me in the forehead nonetheless. I grimaged and shot her a glare. Meg crossed her arms and pouted. She skipped over and inspected Apollo.
“This loser is supposed to be Apollo?” Meg snorted.
“Why is everyone calling me a loser?” Apollo lamented.
“You crawled out of a dumpster and looked like a mess.” Meg said.
“I am not at my best.” He explained, “My father, Zeus, has exiled me from Olympus.”
“That explains a lot of what just happened.” I said.
“I may need assistance.” Apollo said hesitantly. “I need to become a god again.”
“If I remember right,” I said, “you’ve been turned into a mortal before, right? What did you do then?”
“You’ve done this before?” Meg snickered, “How many times?”
Apollo gave Meg an irritated look.
“Usually, Zeus requires me to work as a slave for an important demigod.” Apollo explained, then perked up as though something occurred to him. “Like Percy Jackson! We are in Manhattan, aren’t we?”
“Yeah,” I said then hesitated, “But Percy isn’t going to be super thrilled if you try to push him into another quest.”
“Nonsense,” Apollo said, “Everyone is happy to see me!”
“How do you even know?” Meg asked.
“Know what?” Apollo asked.
“Which demigod you’re supposed to serve, duh.” Meg said and rolled her eyes.
“I… uh. Well, usually it’s obvious. I sort of just ran into them. That’s why I want to find Percy. My new master will claim my service and-”
“I’m Meg McCaffrey,” Meg blew Apollo a raspberry, “and I claim your service!”
“Meg!” My scolding was cut off by thunder rumbling overhead. Apollo’s face fell in a look of shock and horror. Then he grimaced and glared at Meg.
“I walked right into that, didn’t I?” Apollo grumbled.
“Yep!” Meg chirped cheerfully. “We’re going to have fun.”
“Are you sure you’re not my sister in disguise playing a cruel trick on me?” Apollo groaned.
“I’m that other thing you said,” Meg said, “a demigod.”
“How do you know?” Apollo questioned.
“Just do.” Meg said cryptically with a smug smile. “And now I’ve got a sidekick god!”
“I’ve seen her get targeted by monsters before.” I told Apollo. Meg’s shoulders slumped when I explained. Apparently, she’d been getting a kick out of being unhelpful.
“Please, Father, I get the point. Please, I can’t do this!” Apollo pleaded to the sky. If Zeus was listening at all, he ignored Apollo and showed no signs of response.
“Either way,” I said, “we’re going to need to see Percy. If for no other reason than that Percy can drive us to camp. You guys are going to be a huge target if you don’t get somewhere safe.”
Meg groaned.
“I’ll be fine.” She protested. We’d had this argument before. I’d been trying to get Meg to come to camp with me since finding out she’s a demigod. She’d been weirdly against the idea.
“Maybe, but now you have a god turned mortal with you and he’s going to attract more than just monsters who are going to want to have a crack at killing him.” I told her. “Plus, you can barely feed yourself a lot of the time. Camp can give you food and shelter for both of you.”
“Good food?” Meg perked up. I figured that’d get her attention. I nodded.
“Most of the time, yeah.” I said, “You don’t have to go dumpster diving for it, at least.”
“Let’s go!” Meg said quickly.
“Let me grab something from my apartment. Do not go anywhere.” I said and quickly went back up the fire escape to my window. I shut and locked my window. I grabbed my emergency quest back which had an extra dagger, mortal money, drachmas, some Nectar and Ambrosia, a first aid kit and a change of clothes. I left a note for my father so he wouldn't freak out as badly when he got home and saw me gone. Slinging the backpack over my shoulder, I left and locked the door behind me.
