Oswald shook his head. “What do you mean? People have been awful to you before?” It was honestly hard for the Gryffindor to comprehend. He couldn’t comprehend why someone would want to be mean to someone else, especially someone like Aura who certainly didn’t deserve it. He noted the male’s blush, causing his cheeks to turn a light shade of pink in response. Os shrugged his shoulders, shifting his legs a bit so that they were out of the way. “Yeah! Of course. I think I’d be a little more fun than homework.” He smiled, keeping his eyes on Aura the entire time. He nodded excitedly. Quidditch was definitely one of his favorite things. “I do! I’m a Chaser. It’s one of my favorite things to do, honestly. There’s no other rush like flying through the air and trying to win the game.” He couldn’t help himself as he gushed about his favorite thing in the world. The boy was sure he could talk about the sport for the rest of the life without even thinking about it. His mouth fell open comically when the male said he hadn’t seen a game. “Are you kidding me? We have games here all the time! You should come to one.” For once, Oswald didn’t pick up on the humor. “It’s really not as hard as you’d think. If you’re good on a broom, there’s a chance you’d be a natural at the sport.”
Tumblr media
aura cryptically answered, “you and i lead very different lives, Longbottom,” he couldn’t help but notice how adorably the other lit up as he spoke about Quidditch, it was like all his features truly sprang to life, his eyes sparkling and his teeth shining through his smile. Aura hadn’t the faintest idea what Oswald meant by calling himself a ‘Chaser’ but didn’t want to further prove his ineptitude about the subject and quietly vowed to see if he could pick up a book or two about Quidditch when he was in the library later. “I’ve never really had any reason to go to one,” he said softly, pushing his glasses back up the bridge of his nose. He smiled at the brawny Gryffindor - something he was finding himself doing a lot of - “I think my talents lay best with my feet on the ground,” Aura was then about to ask Oswald something further but he’d barely began his sentence when Madam Pomfrey bristled out of her office and began ushering out all visitors. Aura’s spirit dropped, he’d been enjoying Oswald’s company so much, he hadn’t expected it to just simply end. But he gently hopped off the bed and began picking his things up, “Well - that’s that, I ‘spose,” he gave Oswald one last warm smile, “I’m still sorry I landed you in here,” and before he could stop himself, he’d placed his hand on top of Oswald’s as he said it, just meaning to show the other that he really meant what he said. As their warm skin met, Aura’s cheeks flushed pale pink once more and he moved his hand way to hold his books to his chest, “Goodbye,” he rushed as he turned on his heels and headed out the door as fast as he could, mentally berating himself for that ‘inappropriate’ move. He’d almost made his first friend and then he had to ruin it by being weird, great.
But he couldn’t get Oswald out of his mind all evening , just like he’d been struggling with all day, except now it wasn’t because he was dreading speaking to him but rather he couldn’t wait ‘till he could speak to him again. Who knew that making a friend felt this exhilirating? Then of course he fell to pieces everytime he thought aout how he’d held Oswald’s hand for that brief moment before he’d left - what if the Gryffindor now thought he was a freak just like everybody else did ? So - Aura didn’t like not knowing so he decided there was only one rational thing to do. It was late in the evening when he finished all his homework and studies and he’d left all his belongings besides his wand in his room in Ravenclaw and he quietly padded down the deserted Hogwarts hallways. He slipped between hidden passageways and shortcuts and managed to find his way back to the large doors of the hospital wing. “Alohamora,” he whispered at the doors, hearing them chink open, he eased inside, pointing his wand now at Madam Pomfrey’s office, “Muffliato.” He couldn’t risk casting any light so he squinted in the darkness and tried to remember at which bed Oswald had been at. He traipsed carefully across the room until he was beside the Gryffindor again, “Oswald,” he whispered, “Are you awake?”

In an instant, Oswald’s lovable, dopey grin was replaced by an expression of genuine concern. He didn’t like the sound of that at all. He sat up, only gritting his teeth together a tiny bit at the small amount of pay he felt. “Woah, woah, wait. Punish you? What are you talking about?” He paused, searching the blond’s complexion for any hint of an answer. “They’re not being cruel, are they?” If there was anything Os was against, it was bullies. He’d always work to protect the innocent, it was in his blood. “I should have known, I’m an idiot. You’ll have to forgive me.” The Gryffindor was always candid, genuine. And, he never thought too much before saying the first thing that came to his mind. He couldn’t help but smile again. There was something about Aura that was alluring, and he couldn’t put his finger on it. Grinning again, he nodded his head. “I’m certain that you make her extremely proud. Just look at what you cast today. I couldn’t hope to do something half as powerful.” He nodded his head, smiling widely at him before gesturing to the end of the bed. “Aura. I knew that. I’m Oswald. You can sit down if you want, I’m not going anywhere for a while.”
Tumblr media
“it’s hardly anything new,” aura said simply with a shrug, still gazing absent-mindedly out of a window. He blushed a little when the other continued to compliment him, he wasn’t one for flattery but there was something about the way Oswald spoke that made it all just sound so immensely gratifying. He glanced down at where Oswald was gesturing to him, wondering at first if he had dropped something and then gushing when he realized that Oswald wanted him to stay, “Th- thank you ,” he smiled, “I ‘spose I could spare a few for more moments before getting started on homework,” he slid his bag off his shoulder and set the books in his arms down beside it before hopping onto the bed lightly. There was a weird feeling of warmth spreading through his extremities as he got closer to Oswald and he couldn’t quite tell what it was - just chalking it up as the excitement of making a new friend. “So ... you play Quidditch?” he asked, thinking to Oswald mentioning earlier how sad he was that he’d be missing practices, “Do you enjoy it?” he asked, crooking his head to the side, “I can’t say that I’ve ever watched a game despite my house and my family’s best efforts - I just usually have too much work to simply set aside to stare at other people performing sports,” he explained with a half-hearted smile, “I’m decent on a broom - though I don’t think I’d be able to manage playing sports on one,” he attempted a little self-deprecating humour.

Oswald nodded his head at the Ravenclaw’s words, the light smile continuing to display across his face. “Well, you did break my shield, but you only broke my jaw,” he joked a little bit, hoping that he could continue to lighten the mood. He was never really good at being serious, especially when he was supposed to be. “But, like I said, I’m not mad. Just a little upset that I can’t go to practice for a couple of days.” He listened to what Aura was saying, and the puzzle pieces finally began to connect correctly in his mind. The battle. Tom Riddle. His father.  His eyes widened slightly, but so did his smile as the male complimented him. “Oh my god, I just realized that you’re Luna’s son. I don’t know why I didn’t realize that earlier. My dad talks about her sometimes, all good things, of course. I feel kind of dumb now, I should have realized who you are.” He smiled more easily now, thankful that he had finally met his eyes. “You remind me of her. Well, what I’ve heard about her at least.”
Tumblr media
aura almost laughed at the other - which was an interesting, new feeling. butterflies in his stomach making him feel lighter than air. “I’m sorry,” he murmured again, “If it makes you feel any better, the whole school seems determined to punish me for my actions today,” he sighed softly, he looked at Oswald confusedly when the other started looking at him differently, then he blushed deeply again, embarrassed once more, “I - I thought you knew ...” he stopped himself, shaking his head, “Of course you wouldn’t - people only know my name when it’s to taunt me,” he said the last part softly, more to himself than to Oswald. He’d been enjoying Oswald’s company so much that he’d almost forgotten that this was the first time anybody had been this friendly to him at Hogwarts. “Thank you, I appreciate that - I’m not quite as ... creative as she is but I try my best to make her proud,” he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose as he felt them slipping a little, “My name’s Aura, by the way,” he said with a shy smile, trying not to get overwhelmed with the thought that he may just be making his very first friend.

To say that Oswald had a wild way would be a vast understatement. After he had been hit in the face and knocked back, he’d been in a daze as he was brought to the hospital wing. He hardly remembered anything, as he continued to see stars until he was safely in the bed. Everything was happening so fast that he could hardly keep track, and he was certain that he’d passed out a couple of times. All he learned was that his jaw had been broken and his back was pretty fucked up from the crash landing. Through the duration of the day, he continued to wonder what he’d done to make Aura attack him in such a way. He couldn’t get rid of this sinking feeling in his gut that the male truly didn’t like him, or even hated him, which wasn’t something he was used to. Os was a friendly person. He couldn’t get that out of his mind for the duration of the day, as he mostly lay in the bed recovering. Multiple times some of his classmates and fellow students had popped into the wing in order to check on him, and he usually greeted them with a smile. Although they weren’t as bright as they usually were, due to the dull throbbing feeling that radiated throughout his entire body. He knew the pain wouldn’t last long, and he’d certainly been through similar due to Quidditch matches, but that didn’t change the fact that it hurt like hell. All he wanted was his father to come and comfort him, as he seemed to always know just what to say. He didn’t know when that would happen, though, and at least his friends had showed up for the moment. They couldn’t stay long, needing to go to practice along numerous other activities, so he was left alone in the wing once again. About ten minutes later, he heard the door slide open and was surprised to see Aura. Perhaps he wanted to see the damage done so he could relish in satisfaction. Oswald would have to play his cards right to see. He sat up slightly, grunting and mashing his teeth together as pain shot through his body. At first, he simply nodded in response. If he’d meant to hurt him on purpose, he certainly wasn’t acting like it. He didn’t try to stop the confusion that spread across his face. He shook his head, a little bit, slowly, as the male tried to leave. “Hey, wait. Stop.” He paused. “You didn’t do this on purpose, right? You used the wrong spell or… something? Then… I’m not mad. I forgive you.” He even smiled softly to try and reassure the other. Os was a friendly person, he didn’t want any enemies.
Tumblr media
aura had turned, ready to simply leave the Gryffindor be and not make matters worse and already thinking about the letter he would need to write his mother when he heard Oswald speak. He stopped and turned back around, ready for the other to repeat any of the numerous things he’d heard everybody else jeer at him through the day, though he knew it was only fair to let Oswald do so. “I meant to break your shield, not you,” he explained, his eyes still focusing on the ground still, “It was the right spell - I just hadn’t tried before,” he admitted, “My mother told me she witnessed Tom Riddle use it in the Battle - I should’ve calculated that the spell would’ve been too powerful,” he said the last part with a sigh. His eyes finally met with Oswald’s for first time when he heard that final statement, “You do?” he felt a huge weight lifted off his shoulders, “You’re most kind, Oswald,” he gushed, “Well, I shouldn’t be surprised,” he smiled, brushing a little hair behind his ear, “- my mother considers your father one of her closest friends and he’s always been very kind when he visits.” Aura gazed around the serene room as he spoke, swinging a little from side to side, his books still held closely to his chest.

Os thought his spell would have been strong enough. He was pretty confident in his casting now, despite the other knocking him over twice. It was a lot more powerful than what had been used before—he was expecting Aura to use a simple spell. So they could demonstrate how defensive spells worked. He couldn’t have been more wrong. The Gryffindor’s eyes widened as he watched the spell, he didn’t even know what it was, ripple through the air. In an instant it shattered through his shield with a crack !! and sent him flying through the air. He cried out as he was sent flying. The powerful magic had hit him in the face, and even though he was fairly dazed, he could tell that someone was incredibly wrong. He landed roughly on his back, his head snapping behind him to hit the cold floor below him. Oswald practically saw stars float around his head as he lay on the ground, his wand fallen at his side. He couldn’t tell what was happening, as he let his eyes flutter shut. The next thing he knew, the Professor was calling for the crowd that had surrounded him to disperse, and two of his friends were lifting him up so they could take him to the Medical Wing. Now that he had somewhat regained his bearings, he wondered what he’d done to make Aura use something so powerful against him. He wondered if he’d ever bumped into him and not apologized, or cut in front of him for something. Oswald wondered why the boy with the golden locks disliked him so greatly.
Tumblr media
standing in absolute shock, Aura couldn’t move. Like everybody else in the room, as soon as the loud crack had sliced through the air, he was unable to take his eyes off the popular Gryffindor as he sailed backwards through the air and landed with a sickening crunch. He’d never hurt anybody before - not even his worst bullies and as he watched his classmates shove past him to surround the other, including the Professor, he felt absolutely sick to his stomach. Why hadn’t he thought that move through more before he’d made it? He should’ve simply cast something ridiculous like a leg-binding curse at the shield and let it ricochet off - that would’ve made Oswald look good in front of his friends and also allowed him to walk away without a scratch.  Aura tried his best to explain himself to his Professor through jeers from the rest of his peers, and the Professor decided not to punish him and also didn’t deduct house points because he conceded that Aura’s spellcasting abilities were beyond compare. When the class ended, Aura had to try his best not to listen to the things being muttered and shouted at him from all angles. It seemed everybody, even those from his own house, had a grudge against him now - as he hadn’t had enough of that being a Lovegood in the first place. It was hard to concentrate on anything else that day - he kept seeing the shocked look on Oswald’s face as their spells collided and he kept hearing that crunch as he hit the floor. Finally, he decided there was only one thing to do - he would go visit Oswald in the hospital wing, try to explain himself and apologize. It was the right thing to do. So after his last class, he slung his bag over his shoulder and clutched his books to his chest and moved swiftly to the hospital wing. Of course by now, the entire school was aware of what had happened and were convinced that he had performed some kind of heinous hate crime against Oswald. He simply floated by as people continued to stare and whisper, some of them making outright comments towards him. He reached the large wooden doors and eased one open, slipping inside. The room wasn’t very full so it was quite easy to spot where the Gryffindor lay. He walked over slowly until he was right beside him, “Hello,” he said softly, looking at him laying in the cot only did to worsen the feeling in the pit of his stomach, “I - I came to see if you were alright -” he tried, though his words were escaping him and he could already feel a pale pink blush spreading across his cheeks, “I - I know - y - you probably aren’t interested b - but I just wanted to apologize ... I didn’t - I didn’t know the spell was going to go that far - m - my calculations and assumptions were off ... I didn’t mean to ... I never wanted to ...” he took a slow breath, his eyes being pinned on the ground the whole time, unable to meet the other’s eyes, “I - I should go - you probably want to rest.”

This time, Oswald was sent flying across the room with a lot of force. He landed directly on his back, just managing to keep himself from bashing his head into the stone floor beneath him. Again, he heard laughs throughout the room. No doubt some of the Ravenclaws were more than pleased with this interaction. But, he didn’t care. He stayed there for a few more moments, before gritting his teeth and standing up so he could look across the room at his opponent. He considered him for a moment, wondering if he’d ever done anything to make the male dislike him. After a few moments of quick thinking, he couldn’t come up with anything that he’d done to make him upset or harbor any bad feelings towards him. So, he figured that he was just performing his best. But, Os wasn’t going to let that stop him. He had a hell of a lot of optimism. He’d just have to do better. Again, he ran through a series of sayings and motivators he used when his team was losing a game. He wasn’t going to give up — Longbottoms didn’t give up. It didn’t matter if the other could most likely outsmart him in a heartbeat, he had will and perseverance to keep him going. He ran a quick hand through his hair before stepping back up on the platform and staring at the male. Bringing his wand up, he flicked it with determination. “Protego Maxima!” He yelled with fierce determination, willing the spell to be strong enough to withstand whatever was soon to attack him.
Tumblr media
any laughter that happened in the room went unnoticed by Aura. He wasn’t trying to be entertaining and if the roles were reversed and he had been the one sent hurtling across the room, everybody would’ve laughed harder ten-fold. He remained completely neutral and his eyes stayed on his opponent. Part of him was hoping that his performance would be earning him a respectable grade and the other part wanted the class over with - he didn’t particularly enjoy fighting Oswald and that was becoming clearer to him. He was about to walk over to where Oswald lay to see if he could help him back up but he’d barely taken a step before the other was climbing back onto his feet. Part of him was relieved to seem him clambering back onto the platform but part of him was a little troubled at needing to continue the battle. He steadied himself as he waited for Longbottom’s next move and was mildly impressed at the strength of his shield. After a few moments of thinking, his light eyes looking from Oswald to a nearby window as he thought, trying to remember what he’d read about shields when he remembered his mother telling him of a silent incantation which could shatter even the most powerful shields - a spell she’d seen used herself by Lord Voldermort during the war. While Oswald’s shield wasn’t as strong as the one that had been cast over the school, Aura assumed it would have the same effect. Turning to face Oswald once more he slashed his wand through the air as the incantation left his lips and he immediately knew he’d used too much power. He could feel it ripple through the air and as his magic connected with his opponents there was a deafening blast and Aura’s eyes went wide as he realized the terrible mistake he’d made.

His opponent looked familiar, but he couldn’t quite place where he knew his face from. There was something about that light blond hair that struck a chord deep within the jock’s core. He reminded him of someone. Maybe he’d ask his father, surely he would know who else had that beautiful hair. He was excited to be casting spells. Many times as a child he had asked his parents, primarily his father, to retell stories from the war. He knew that it was a terrible thing, but he always filled with joy when he thought about his parents being heroes. He’d always promised himself that he’d be like that if a situation ever arose that would call for it. Brave, confident, and fearless. Which, he used to motivation himself on the field. This was the reason he took some of his classes more seriously than other. He wanted to be a higher caliber wizard, only so he could protect those less fortunate and in need. So, he was more than ready to participate in a Wizard Duel. Soon, it was time to begin. Oswald had just brought up his wand when he was knocked back onto his ass. “Damn,” he cursed underneath his breath, although he wasn’t upset. There were some chuckles around the room, but of course it didn’t phase him. He smiled slightly and stood up, brushing himself off. He had fierce determination and a will to accomplish anything he put his mind to. The male was relentless. He wasn’t going to let someone who seemed to have the upper hand stop him. Immediately, he cast a spell before he could get knocked over again. “Protego!”
Tumblr media
watching the other land on his backside was bitter-sweet. on one hand, aura enjoyed the feeling of flexing out his powers but on the other it just didn’t feel right knocking Oswald down, considering their parents past. Or at least, that’s what he was telling himself and refusing to believe it had anything to do with how attractive the other was. He watched him get back up and was pleasantly surprised to see him smiling. Aura got a funny feeling about that - it was almost as if Oswald was challenging him. As if he was silently declaring that he could take anything Aura could throw at him. Aura was not a violent person at all, like his mother, he only acted in retaliation when absolutely necessary and even then he was calm and aloof about it all. This time he let Oswald get his bearings and even let him cast a shield before he made his next move. The Protego shield was infamous and sturdy - but only against moderate spells and jinx’s, meaning Aura would need to produce something much stronger than before. So with a very calculated hand, Aura merely pointed his wand straight at the other with a smirk, “Expulso!”. A large, blue force erupted from his wand and blasted across the classroom at the other - this one would hit Oswald much harder than before and send him flying backwards rather than simply falling backwards like before.

Os and some other Gryffindors walked through the halls in a tight-knit pack. He was excited for classes to finally end, because that meant it was time for Quidditch practice. Nothing else gave him the same rush of joy and adrenaline as playing his favorite sport. Many of the guys he was currently walking with were on the team as well, he spent almost all of his time with his friends. It seemed that he never got much alone time, but he didn’t mind. He loved being around other people. So, the ground of men joked and teased each other as they finally walked into the Defense Against the Dark Arts room. He noticed a blond boy standing across the room and quickly learned that he was going to be his partner for the day. Oswald nodded, shifting to hold his wand tightly at his side. Soon, he was standing across the way from the mysterious boy that he recognized, but couldn’t place. He waved to him, before looking at their professor for further instruction.
Tumblr media
When the pack of Gryffindors stumbled into the classroom, Aura kept his eyes to the floor, knowing better than to make eye contact with jocks and look for trouble that he wasn’t interested in. He silently cursed when he heard the Professor team him up with one of them. He slowly glanced up to see who and his breath caught - it was Oswald, son of Professor Longbottom - the beefy jock was handsome and charismatic but he just reminded Aura of how different he was to everybody else. The other probably had no idea who he was, despite how close their parents were. When the other waved to him, he simply nodded his head in return. The rest of the students filed into the classroom in groups until finally class was ready to start and their Professor revealed that today they would be revising the defensive spells that they’d been learning thus far, and to make it more exciting, the Professor had decided to do it in Wizard Duel style. Aura glanced over at Oswald, and wandered what level the other’s spell casting was at, surely the son of a Professor, even a Herbology Professor, one who fought in the Battle of Hogwarts alongside his own mother, would be a worthy opponent. When they moved to begin, they all faced each other directly in two lines down the center of the classroom, Aura’s line was chosen to be offensive while Oswald’s was defensive. When the Professor gave them the go ahead, Aura moved so quickly that the other hadn’t even had a chance to cast any sort of defensive spell yet, twirling his wand and moving his body in a fluid motion as he pronounced, “Expelliarmus,” and knocked Oswald backwards.

Aura clung his books to his chest as he moved quickly through the castle. He’d just finished his Transfiguration class and now it was time for the final class of the day; Defense Against the Dark Arts. Nobody ever spoke to him or even walked near him in the hallways so it was pretty easy for him to make it to his classes quickly, also thanks to a couple hidden passageways he’d learned about over the years. He made it to the classroom with a small huff of breath, only to find all the desks had been removed and he was instructed to stand to the side of the room - they were to be partnered up for whatever today’s lesson was and Aura’s jaw clenched at the thought. But he waited quietly and patiently, with his arms folded, for whoever his partner would be, to arrive.
