as a girl who is literally just a girl i am always yearning. always longing always missing always wearing my heart on my sleeve. always feeling like my heart is on the verge of exploding. the sight of the sun makes me cry. anyway

I used to pray every night
Eyes strained against their velvet blankets
Little fingers hugging their sisters
I used to pray every night
And beg God to keep my mother safe,
And my father-
I guess I should include my sister (I can hear her sleeping in the next room, and my mom would be so upset if she knew I left her out)
Ame-but what if God is like a Genie.
What if his clouds and harps are just smoke and lamps hidden behind big churches and loud organs?
What if all the people I don't pray to Save
are all doomed the moment I
forget them?
I pray again.
Please God keep my mom
(I got her full name for you and your angels, God)
my dad (i made sure to double check which order his middle name is in)
my sister, my aunt's on both sides and all my uncles, grandma and grandpa, nanny and papa, all my cousins, please God I beg for their safety.
Amen
The next night
I pray to God again
I used to pray every night
But now
It's been many nights
Since prayer or fervent reverence has pushed its way through my lips.
A bull looking for the man holding the red flag.
Smokes and mirrors feel an awful lot like heavenly bliss now that I'm older
I've learned that Sometimes
A Genie and a lamp
is more than you can hope for
And there are worse things to pray for
I know that god
Does not exist
But sometimes, in the dead of night
When I feel the dirt filling my throat as the church organs play and the wailing begin
I wish I could bring myself
To close my eyes against satin sheets
To bring sisters together
And say
Amen

Not socialist in a “I won’t have to work” type of way but socialist in a “I’ll still be working but I won’t be worried I won’t make the rent” type of way. In a “billions won’t be hoarded by one person” type of way. In a “janitors, fast-food workers, child care workers, preschool teachers, hotel clerks, personal care and home health aides, and grocery store cashiers, will live comfortably” type of way. In a “the sick and elderly will be cared for” type of way. In a “no child should work” type of way.
