Considering it’s the first time I’ve actually wrote anything like this I really enjoyed creating this. Even if it isn’t the best of work lol. Thanks for all your kind encouragement to finally get this finished and thanks for being patient with me.

Part3
“You told her?” Feyre asked.
She had walked in to see Azriel on the floor by his bed his shadows covering his face. He had a look of regret as his thoughts and shadows consumed him.
His shadows parted slightly to show his face but not so far as if they too could sense his vulnerability. He looked at her, the pain and emotions covered up now and instead replaced with a blank look.
Feyre had a bottle of alcohol in her hand and two glasses, as she made her way over to the shadow singer.
The party was over 8 days ago, y/n decided to stay at the summer court and Azriel has kept to his room since. Partly because he was embarrassed to show his face to anyone, partly because she wasn’t there.
“I told you not to.” Feyre said pouring a glass for them both. He only shrugged as he drained its continents.
“She says that she’s sorry.”
He perked up at that.
“You’ve talked to her? How is she? Is she still going to..” Azriel said now giving his full attention to his high lady.
What was he thinking? Of course she was. Cassian would’ve came in screaming by now if the wedding was off.
She nodded sadly at his last question, the small hope he had evaporated in his eyes as she did.
“But she’s okay?”
“She’s fine, she’s just a little overwhelmed and in Y/n fashion incredibly apologetic.”
Azriel felt deflated, she had no reason to be sorry for anything. Confessing that was his doing, she shouldn’t be placing the blame on herself when it’s all his fault.
“When she finally told me why she didn’t want to stay here anymore. All she said was that she’s sorry that you didn’t say sooner, and sorry that she didn’t notice sooner.”
He poured himself another glass and did the same thing. Alcohol wasn’t the best medicine but it sure could help in moments like these.
He had no right to love her now. Not when she had loved him for so long.
And he knew, he acted like he didn’t but it was engraved into him to notice things that others did not see.
He saw that her smile got brighter when he was around, her voice got louder as if she was desperate to be heard. Then of course were the longing looks she’d give him, whether she realised or not. She gave everything away. Even when she looked away when he caught her staring. Just like he had once done with Mor and unwittingly he had put his friend, his love in the exact same situation he was once in. A part of him during that time of loving Elaine and Y/n loving him, actually felt smug that he had both ladies hearts. Azriel the man who had once had nothing, felt that he had everything during that time. He gained the arrogance of a King, and the smugness of a soldier and he knowingly hurt Y/n in the process of it all.
Feyre had fallen silent. He was up at his drawers pulling out clothes in a drastic manner. He had to get out of here, find some tranquility. If he was going to go to this wedding, he needed to be alone for a little while.
“Wait where are you going?” Feyre shouted as he made his way to the balcony in the living room.
“I just need to leave for a couple of days. If Rhys needs me he knows how to reach me.”
“You’re not going to go see her are you?” She asked him worriedly.
He paused for a moment, turning away from the setting sun to look at his high lady.
“How could I even face her? After everything I’ve done, Feyre.”
Without hesitating Feyre walked up to him and gave him a hug.
“I know she’s my sister, but you’re also my friend. It hurts seeing you both in pain and being able to do nothing about it. Just be safe and don’t do anything reckless.”
He gave a small smile down at her.
“Has anyone ever told you, you worry to much?”
She rolled her eyes at his question.
“I can think of one in particular, who said the same thing to me a couple of months ago.”
With that Azriel took to the pink skies.
Feyre would never admit it, but she secretly hoped her sister would change her mind.
When Azriel came to the spot that always brought him peace. He instantly began to get frustrated. It wasn’t working. He had flown out here all night and the calming water and rising sun brought him nothing. His thoughts still surrounded him. He had even tried meditating but his own breathing started to piss him off after a while.
He was about to fly off again when he heard a shuffling by the forest.
His hands instinctively going for truth teller as he watched a red cloaked women appear from the trees.
“Who goes there.” He demanded as she reached for her hood.
It was- but it couldn’t be? How could she be here? How could she know this is where he came to.
“Y/n?” He said wide eyed studying her with his eyes. She had a corset dress on that pushed up her chest and accentuated her waist. Her hair was loose and curled. She was jaw dropping as usual. But something felt off. He wasn’t getting her scent. Or Tarquins, it was as if someone had purposely covered it.
“Is that the name that belongs to this pretty face?” The voice was groggy and sharp, it felt unbearable to listen to. No this wasn’t his y/n. This was some sort of trick.
“Who are you?” He demanded once more, irritated and frightened now.
“I could be anyone you like, spymaster.”
The voice came out once more, however this time whispers surrounded it. The wind began to change, once a light breeze now storm like. The forest itself looked frightened as the trees shook, like they to could sense danger.
“I don’t want your help. Now get away from here, before I do something I certainly will not regret.” He said face becoming hard, wings flaring and knife at the ready.
“There’s no need for threats. I am a helper. my mother was a seer my father was a diamante. I am both. I’ve came to you in this form as it is the one you trust the most. I cannot show you my true form. No one can see it but me. I can help you shadow singer. But for a price.” She said smiling beautifully.
His mental shields instinctively went up.
It made him feel sick. To see y/n being portrayed by this creature.
“Go ahead and put them up. I can still get through.” She said sweetly.
He finally lost it at that.
“Help me? You don’t know anything about me. So what? You can shape shift, I’ve seen much worse in my days, now away with you.” He said getting angrier.
“I don’t know you? How about I tell you the story of how you got your scarred hands? I could even tell it better than you.” She said beginning to circle him. He looked down at his hands, they were gloved and she could have no way of seeing them.
“Or your worst regret in life? I doubt you even know that.” She said peering over his shoulder.
He side eyed her.
“What can you do?”
Maybe he could ask her, say he’s not interested and leave.
“Hmm.” She sang. Wondering around and nonchalantly admiring the flowers.
“Well anything you like I suppose. A night of passion in this body perhaps.”
He glared at her, as the creature stroked her hands up Y/n’s body. Purposely stopping at the chest.
If he ever had the chance to be that way with y/n, it would actually be with her and it would be more than a night.
“Or I could show you exactly what the girl you’re in love with is thinking right now.”
That sparked his interest.
What if it was a trick though? A way to get into his mind and hers? What if it hurt y/n?
“It won’t hurt her. Your souls will be connected just for a moment. And then once you’ve learned what you need to. You’ll no longer be attached to each other. Still in love of course. But you won’t be able to hear her thoughts anymore.”
He thought for a moment. To hear what she actually thought of him. To briefly know exactly what is going on in that head of hers. It excited him to no end. He didn’t let the creature see that of course.
“What’s your price then?”
She smirked at that.
“Follow me.” She said as the trees parted and a path formed that wound up to a small cabin house.
He reluctantly followed behind her. The trees closing up again and swallowing up any daylight behind them.
When they entered the house a fire was burning and an empty cauldron sat under it. Glasses of dead things were all over the house.
He scrunched his nose at the place.
“From you. I’d like to know your deepest secret.”
“I thought you knew everything.” He said smugly seeing that there was a weakness to the creature.
She glared back.
“The mind has funny ways of locking certain things up tight. I can see your most worrisome thoughts, and your worst and best days. Secrets, however are hard to reach.”
“Fine.” He said.
She opened a jar before he could speak.
“Speak into it.”
So he told her.
“Oh.” She laughed.
“That’s good.” She said laughing once more.
She went and grabbed a stool.
Mumbling to herself. While she looked for gods knows what.
“You see that’s the problem with short bodies. I can never see what I’m looking for.”
“Not you. Not you. Definitely not you-ah there we are.” She said plucking a green bottle from the many shelves.
She handed it to him.
“What do I do with this?” He asked.
“Drink it.”
“What’s going to happen if I do?”
She shrugged at his question.
“Drink it and find out.”
So he did. It tasted bitter and left a bad taste in his mouth.
Then he fell back, but he never hit the floor, he sunk through the carpet, through the house, through the soil and didn’t stop as he went through the earth.
She peeked her head down the sink hole.
It had to be a trick of the mind it couldn’t be real.
“Stay calm, Azriel.” She called, her voice echoing around him.
Then he heard the voice, her voice. Y/n’s voice calling his name, really Y/n’s voice this time. Just as it did in the dream, except this time it sounded desperate. That’s when he hit the bed. Soft and welcoming as his head met the pillow.
He got up as he heard foot steps coming towards the room.
Y/n came through the door. She was yelling and Tarquin was close on her heels.
He had to concentrate to hear what they were arguing about. Neither of them noticed Azriel by the bed.
“I’m not ready to.”
“You’ve been saying that for months now!”
Tarquin frustratedly yelled back at her standing his ground it seemed.
“Tarquin, do you really want to do it like this. Pressuring me to do it, does that really sound like a good first time to you.” She said voice loosing its loudness slightly.
“No but-“ Tarquin began.
“Then can’t you just give me some time.” She said interrupting him, hands moving frantically as she tried to make her point.
“I’ve given you time, how much longer am I to wait!“ Tarquin said getting angrier and frustratedly falling back on a dressing chair. This must’ve been y/n’s room. A duck egg blue was the theme. With an inviting bed and drawn back curtains on the romantic windows to let the breeze in. Everything about it showed y/n, the small clutter at the desk. The small paintings of the night court made by Feyre hanging on the walls.
“I’m just asking you to be patient with me.” She said arms coming round herself as her voice became pleading.
“Fine.” He said getting up and walking past her. She let out a heavy sigh as the door slammed shut.
She stood in the same position.
“Would Azriel be like this?”
Azriel heard this but didn’t see her mouth move. He quickly caught on that obviously she couldn’t see him or hear him.
His shadows were gone as he walked towards her carefully testing if she could sense his presence. It was like he was a ghost. He felt wrong, to be spying on her of all people he had already over heard so much. He reached out and touched her face. As she stood there crying.
He wanted to hug her and console her not even as a lover but as a friend. Just as he should’ve when they were friends. He heard her crying all those months ago when she was in love with him. He selfishly ignored it because it was inconvenient to acknowledge it. But now he’d give anything to go back in time and change it all. Everything. To never have gone near Elaine. To have let Lucien have her and focus on loving Y/n.
“Azriel.” She thought. His hand touched her face. Whether she could feel it or not her head leaned into it as if she did.
“I wish you were here.” She spoke out loud. Tears streaming down her face.
“I’m in love with him, I must be.”
“I’ve made the wrong choice.”
“Maybe I still have a chance.”
“I need to find him.”
“I need to tell him I love him too.”
His heart jumped at her sudden burst of thoughts, she moved frantically around the room sniffling as she did so.
“I’m here.” He tried to say.
He yelled again.
“I’m here I love you y/n”
“IM HERE, Y/N I LOVE YOU.” He yelled as he knocked over the chair. He turned startled. As did she.
“Az?” She spoke out loud looking frantically.
She had heard an echo of his voice as the chair fell back.
“Yes, yes my love I’m here.” He said coming up to her again. As she began to write on the parchment.
Dear Azriel, I’m sorry please forgive me. I love you, of course I love you. I always have and always will please let me make it up to you. I will break off my marriage with Tarquin. I want to be with you. I love you, my darling.
Humbly yours,y/n Acheron
She stuffed the letter in her pocket as Tarquin made his way into her room.
“What are you doing, my heart.” He said more malicious than loving.
Azriel panicked his heart racing as he saw the that anger flashed in Tarquins eyes.
He spotted the letter poking out of her pocket.
It was a fight as he grabbed it off of her, tearing it slightly.
“you’re still in love with him?” Tarquin asked quietly, a sense of danger in his tone.
She only nodded shamefully.
“I’m sorry, I can’t marry you Tarquin.”
“The wedding is in 10 days.” He declared.
“We’re not ending it now.”
“Please, I can’t-“
“No. Love him all you want but you will give me an air y/n. It must be you.”
“But why?” She cried.
“Why? You’re an Acheron! Have you really not caught on. If I marry you I can have a child that not only has a right to the summer court but also a direct passage to the night court.” He said practically exploding.
“So you never loved me then.” She stated her posture straightening.
“Did I say that?” He said scowling now.
“Loving you was convenient for me.”
He said. Her face was red and puffy from all the crying, but she had a look on her face that could make an army fall back. Even Tarquin looked cautious.
“And all this? This is love to you? Using me as a way to gain more power?” She said yelling.
“Yes because overall this will be just as beneficial for you as it is for me, in the long run.” He said now ripping up the letter.
“No!” “No!” Azriel and y/n screamed together.
With that Tarquin shut her bedroom door and locked it.
She began to bang on it repeatedly.
“Let me out!” She bellowed.
Then Azriel began falling again.
“No. Not yet! Please I need to help her!” He shouted as he fell through the floor, through the house and past the soil once more. It all seemed faster this time.
When Azriel woke up there was a clashing of swords. He was still in the house his shadows instantly departed as he got up. To see Cassian and Rhys fighting outside with some mutated creature. Limbs pointing in all the wrong directions face contorted and made up of many different shades and four eyes all separate colours. It’s teeth clenching and trying to bite at his brothers. It made an awful shriek as Cassian plunged his sword through it.
“Stop!” Azriel called.
Cassian pulled his sword out as the creature fell back. Rhys panting as he put his own sword away.
Azriel ran toward the creature and kneeled were it had fallen.
“Did you hear her, spymaster?” The cretaure said tears falling down its eyes.
“Yes, thank you.”
“I never got the chance to disconnect your so-“
The sentence caught in its throat as it it took its last breath.
“What have you both done.” Azriel asked sadness lacing his voice. He realised now that the creature really did just mean to help.
“We found you lying on the floor with this thing next to you. We’re sorry brother we assumed the worst.” Rhys said kneeling beside him putting a hand on his shoulder.
“Our souls.”
“What are you taking about?” Rhys asked.
“Mine and y/n’s, you killed it, our souls are still connected.” He said running a hand through his hair in frustration. He even felt differently now as if he couldn’t move on his own anymore.
“We have to bury it.” Az said beginning to dig a hole next to the house.
~ ~ ~
Y/n watched as the servant laced up the last of the golden white dress. He hair was curled, she had a small crown of seashells adorned on her head. She looked like a princess. Her and Tarquin had came to an agreement. She would marry him and give him an air, then she was free to leave. Though she wasn’t comfortable with the idea of leaving her own child.
“Smile dear, it’s your wedding day.” The clueless maid said fixing the last of the accessories.
The necklace on her neck once beautiful now felt ugly. It felt like a symbol of owner ship. At least she had one thing to look forward to. Seeing her family. The only one who had stopped by these past weeks was Mor, with her planning.
“Y/n!” Mor called as she banged open the door. There stood Amren, Nesta, Feyre and Elaine beside her. Y/n smiled brightly as they all piled in each with a bottle of champagne in their hands.
They all came up to hug her.
“You guys look great!” She had let them all fashion dresses of their signature colours they all had the same design though.
Mor in her usual red, Amren in dark grey, Nesta in emerald green, Elaine in lilac and Feyre in royal blue.
“Yes well apparently black wasn’t an option.” Amren stated. Y/n looked at Mor sternly.
“What? This is a wedding not a funeral!” She said shrugging a s she poured a glass of champagne. They all laughed but something in y/n tightened. She was saying good bye to some things. Her chance with Azriel for starters, he’d never go near her once she became a married woman. She was saying good bye to freedom for a while.
There was no way Tarquin would let her out of his sight after the wedding.
When she finally fell asleep after crying by the door all night she found the door to be unlocked in the morning. She felt different though. Physically and mentally it was as if a part of her was missing.
He apologised to her, begged for her forgiveness said that he didn’t know what became of him and that he loved her deeply and he would never want to purposely hurt her. She of course forgave him and now here she was being paraded by her sisters and savouring every moment before the nuptials. She didn’t quite know how she imagined her wedding day, but the feeling of dread was not a part of it.
Elaine spaced out for a second, y/n was the only one to notice the rest either not observing or to use to it by now.
“Elaine are you okay?” Y/n said as she touched her sisters hand.
Elaine flinched back as if taken out of a trance.
“I just saw-“ she stopped talking, pain written over her face as she locked eyes with y/n.
“Saw what Elaine?” She said with concern as she studied her sister.
Then she brought Y/n into a tight hug.
“Don’t marry him.” She whispered against her hair.
“It’ll only bring you pain.” She whispered once more.
“I have to Elaine, it’s too late.”
“But-“
“I know Elaine, I know what you saw. I can do it, I’m strong enough.” She said trying to convince herself rather than her sister.
Elaine shook her head tears brimming her eyes.
Y/n whispered closely to her this time.
“Don’t say anything to the others, I don’t want them worrying.”
Elaine only nodded sadly.
“What’s with the sad fest!” Mor said coming up behind y/n and throwing her arm around her.
She tried to laugh it off. Tried to not let the thought of Elaine’s vision get to her.
“Nothing, I’d like to make a small toast.”
“You know you’re a meant to wait for the reception right.” Nesta said sarcastically.
“Well I guess I’m breaking tradition then.” Y/n said in the same tone.
“To my sisters-“
“Hey wait for us!” Cassian called with Rhys and Azriel and Lucien behind him.
She smiled brightly at the sound of his voice and turned around to the door.
Cassian sauntered in with a smirk each came up and gave her a hug. Then it got to Azriel.
She’s had almost forgotten about what she heard that day after the first argument with Tarquin. The chair had fallen and she thought she had heard Azriel bellow her name. She played it off as her subconscious but with the lurch that her heart gave as she locked eyes with him she began to second guess herself. Maybe somehow, she did hear him.
Without realising a tear fell down her face as he came up to her. They were like magnets to each other.
“You look beautiful y/n.” A look of longing and sorrow passed her face as he wiped the tear away. She wanted to lean into his hand, to fall into his arms. Tell him how sorry she was and make it right. Make everything right. But instead she smiled sadly and hugged him tightly. Like she never wanted to let go. To stay with him forever and protect him just as he would protect her. To love him wholeheartedly. To live and breathe him every day. His scent clouded her. It was familiar, safe and dangerous, happiness and regret all in one. It was- Love. It was love. She knew that now.
She pulled away first. The rest of the group quieting down, too scared to spoil the moment. Each routing that y/n would change her mind.
They locked eyes once more. Sadness and love both fogging their gaze.
“Ready y/n?” Mor asked quietly.
“Yes.” She answered breathy.
~ ~ ~
The music played as the high priestess sang. Mor went first, then Nesta, then Feyre, then Elaine and lastly Amren with varian.
That’s when y/n began her walk. Everyone stood up as they waited for her to walk down the Isle. Tears were brimming her eyes as she looked at all her friends then up at Tarquin who had a look of concern. She walked to the beat of the music as she did so. When she finally got up next to Tarquin, the music settled and everyone sat.
The high priestess began talking.
She couldn’t focus because at the corner of Tarquins shoulder there sat Azriel with his brothers. Her gaze kept falling back to him unknowingly.
“Please link hands.” The high priestess said.
As y/n did this she heard the one word that would change her fate forever.
“Mate.” Her eyes went wide not fully believing what she just heard.
When she followed Tarquins gaze she realised he was looking at a a beautiful blonde woman sitting in the 3rd row.
She let out a breathy laugh of relief.
Not realising how tense she had been.
And she just laughed and laughed and laughed. She probably looked manic. Maybe mad even but she wasn’t in the slightest.
“Wow I did not see that coming” Nesta said shocked as Tarquin made his way to the woman.
“I did.” Elaine said scrunching her face slightly.
“And you didn’t say anything?” Nesta and Feyre said together, both whipping round to face Elaine.
“She told me not to say.” She said continuing to face the scene and not acknowledging her two sisters annoyance.
“Did you maybe not think Elaine that she’d have no idea what you’re taking about?”
“We can’t all see your visions you know.”
“But she said she knew what I was talking about, I thought she meant this.”
“How could she of known this was going to happen? She’s as shocked as us!” Feyre said fury taken over as she marched over to y/n.
“Are you okay? I’m so sorry y/n, I can’t believe this happened-“
Before she could finish y/n put her hand up to stop her.
She looked at her sister and smiled
“Let’s just get out of here, curse breaker.”
Feyre smirked back.
The rest of her family began to rise form the chairs pushing their way past everyone as y/n made her way up to Tarquin. Cassian stood close just in case y/n got any violent ideas.
She threw off the seashell crown, as she just now realised the pain it was causing on her head. She unclipped the necklace and gave it to the girl.
“Its all yours now, sweetheart.”
“Y/n I’m so sorry-“ Tarquin began.
“I wish you both well.” She smiled genuinely.
Tarquin tilted his head to her and turned to his new mate, completely mesmerised by the girl.
“Oh and Tarquin.” She said turning back to look at him once more.
“It never would’ve worked between us love, I’m sorry.” She said sarcastically with a wink.
The rest of the gang followed off behind her.
Tarquin stopped Azriel before he could go any further.
“Hey, try not to fuck it up this time.” He deadpanned to the spymaster just below a whisper.
He raised his eyebrows, a silent nod to the high lord to show his thanks.
No, no he would not ruin it this time.
He would make her feel just how truly special she is to him. He will give her all the time in the world, because he loves her.
The inner circle neared the balcony of the building, getting ready to winnow back to the night court.
“Ready?” Azriel said holding his hand out to her.
She softly put her hand into his. And smiled up at him.
“Yes but I think I’d rather fly tonight.” He smirked as the rest of them took off leaving them alone on the balcony.
With that he pulled her into the warmth of his arms and they took off to the night filled skies.
They could talk when she’s ready.
Either tomorrow or ten years from now, he would be ready to listen.

Sunsets- part 2 of shadows
Well here you go part 2. Wrote this instead of studying for my exam, so please cherish it.
TW: sexual references, Az is kind of an ass, but he’s our ass so it’s fine. If there is anything else that offends or triggers anyone please let me know! Also this one is very long compared to the last. You’ve been warned.
Enjoy!
Part2
5 and a half months later..
“Engaged?! You’re kidding right?”
Nope. No you were not. Turns out the trip to the summer court had a lot more to offer than you expected. It was only a meant to be a month but the high lord of the summer court quickly took a fancy to you. Tarquin had not been shy about his feelings for you, in the first 7 days he admitted that he liked you. Over some cocktails at a beach bar he had taken you to, you both got a bit drunk and suddenly you were all over each other.
The rest had been a world wind of jewellery, dresses and parties. When you finally thought it was time to go back and visit your family he proposed and confessed his love to you. You loved him, you were sure of it. Azriel still lingered in the back of your mind but you came to accept that he would never be yours nor would you ever be his. So that brings you to today. Sitting with tea in the living room of the river house with the back doors wide open bringing in the scents from the blooming garden outside. Feyre and Nesta were the only ones home and had spied you first. The rest had not heard of your arrival yet. Feyre was gob smacked at the news and Nesta looked both shocked and curious. “What made you say yes?” Nesta asked pouring herself another cup of tea. “I love him Ness, and he loves me too. I know it’s seems quick with the wedding only being a month away-“
“A month!” Feyre had finally came out of her shocked trance.
“Y/n I know you love him but you’re really young don’t you want to think about it for a little while? I mean you’ve only known him for a couple of months.”
“What’s there to think about? Feyre I’m going to be high lady of the summer court! I can’t wait to be married to him, just think of the life I’m going to have.” You smiled taking your sisters hand.
“And plus I’m human, I don’t have as long as you guys, time isn’t my friend like it is yours I could die or he could find a mate within the year. I’m really hoping I die before that happens though.”
“But-“ Feyre began again.
“But nothing. It’s happening and that’s final, I didn’t come for your blessings. I came to ask you to be my bridesmaids. All four of you.”
Nesta made a confused face. “Y/n there are 5 of us girls.”
“I know I already asked Mor to be my Maid of honour.” You said casually sipping your tea.
“You did what now?” Nesta stood beginning to pace.
“First you get in a relationship without telling us then you get a tattoo and now you’re not picking me-“
“Us.” Feyre intertwined.
“Right any of us, your sisters! To be your Maid of honour. What did the heat from the summer court fry your brain cells as well.”
You had to admit you had a nice glow about you from the sun. In fact everything about you was different you felt good, stronger somehow. Your hair felt softer, your teeth were whiter and though at first it felt too revealing, you had become accustomed to the summer court fashion which was all small tops and flowing skirts to live with the heat. Since it was summer time at the night court you were wearing an outfit from the summer court today. It was a yellow string bralette with a white flowing skirt and light brown leather sandals. The outfit showed off your recently adorned tattoo, a silly deal you had made with tarquin about coming back and not changing your mind. He wasn’t very trusting and you had your sister to thank for that after the whole book stealing scandal.
The tattoo began at your sternum then stopped just above your belly button it was one large sun at the top and three small stars after it. The black ink actually suited you and made you want to make more silly deals in the future. You hair was braided at both sides with small pearls interlocked in each one which made it look much more prettier.
“I thought it would be to hard to choose out of the three of you and Amren isn’t exactly known for her party planning. Mor is the best for the job and you both know it.” You said giving Nesta a small smile as she slumped back in her chair.
Then a small letter flew into the room right into your lap. It had the summer court symbol printed on the envelope. You smiled knowing exactly who it was from. Being with Tarquin was easy, he was kind and caring and he spoiled you incessantly. Though the marriage was for slight convenience due to the fact that the summer court needed airs and the High Fae were not known to produce easily. It was luck that Rhys and Feyre were able to have Nyx so quickly and other courts have been introducing humans to their lives. Your marriage to Tarquin is not the first human-Faerie marriage. The winter court has had many of them and the high lady and high lord encouraged it, many have since followed in pursuit. Old prejudices were leaving and more and more species were becoming interracial.
“Well open it then.” Nesta said before guzzling the rest of her tea like a brute.
* ( * ( *
My dearest y/n,
I am getting quite desperate to hear of your families reaction to our engagement, and so I would like to invite you all to a party on the day after tomorrow. All the courts will also be present to give their blessing as mandatory. I anticipate your introduction to some of my closes friends, I’m sure they will adore you as much as I do.
Sending all my love
Your high lord of the summer court,Tarquin.
P.S Cassian is excused of his unfortunate incident the last time he visited, however we will be keeping a watchful eye on him.
“What does it say?” Feyre asked the giddiness clear in her voice.
You took a deep breath before you spoke, you were going to be in a room full of high lords and ladies and one of them included your sisters ex lover.
“We’re invited to a party tomorrow, along with all the other courts.” You said before folding up the note. That’s when Nesta snatched it away from you as she muttered “that can’t just be it.” With that she began reading the romantic part of the letter out loud.
“My dearest y/n! I’m sure they will adore you as much as I do! YOUR HIGH LORD!” Nesta practically screamed as you ran around the table to try and pry it off her.
All the while Feyre giggled as you both played a cat and mouse chase around the the living room.
“Give it back!” You said jumping slightly to reach the note Nesta dangled above her head. “Jump y/n! Jump for YOUR high lord!” She laughed as she looked over to Feyre.
That’s when you tripped Nesta up from the back of her leg and grabbed the note as she fell to the floor. “Why jump when you could just fall.” You laughed and turned around to go back to the table, until she grabbed your ankle from behind and you fell face first to the floor. She got on top of you as she tried to pry the note out of your hand.
“Y/n you’ve been home for not even an hour and you’ve already gotten her to behave like a child again.” Feyre got up with her hands on her hips. You stopped and looked at each other before grabbing both her hands and pulling her to the floor with you both. She fell on top of you as you all let out ‘Ows’ and screams of laughter. Just then Rhys, Azriel and Cassian walked in stunned at the scene before them. You were on the ground rolling with laughter as Nesta was stopping Feyre from getting up by repeatedly tripping her. Rhys let out a sigh as he said
“I had a feeling it was because
Y/n’s home.” With that Cassian gave you a hand up and pulled you into a hug. You laughed as he spun you around.
“I don’t care if Tarquin wants to marry you they can’t have you, you were our human first.” You gave Nesta a dry stare as he set you down.
“Couldn’t even wait a minute ya big gossip.”
She shrugged at your statement going over to Cassian as you went to give Rhys a hug.
“Thanks y/n I can’t wait to see all my high lord friends.” Rhys said sarcastically as you pulled away. You gave him an apologetic smile as you thought about all the high lords congregating together again. “I’m sorry but you did kind of make it mandatory when you made that peace treaty with all of them.”
“Still you just had to go falling in love again didn’t you.” Rhys said casually sauntering over to the couch. Your smile dropped, you didn’t recall ever telling him you’d been in love before and now that man you had been in love with was standing right in front of you. Everyone’s faces either cringed or looked down Feyre smacked Rhys at the back of his head as the realisation hit. Rather than letting the awkwardness get the better of you, you walked up to Azriel and practically threw your arms around him. “It’s good to see you again.” You said as you pulled away from the hug as quick as it had started and went off to sit on the couch by Feyre.
The silence still continued around the lot of you before you spoke up.
“Ness?”
She answers with hmm.
“Does everyone know?” You said scrunching your face slightly, while laying back on the too large couch.
“Define everyone.”
“Oh my gods.” You said pulling a pillow in front of your face after Cassian answered for her. The rest of them chuckled at your reaction.
“I’m sorry, they were all wondering why you left and I might’ve accidentally let on that I knew and then Azriel said he knew and then of course Cassian had to jump in.” She said aiming a glare at him while he put his hands up defensively.
“It’s fine Y/n we all kinda of knew anyway, besides you’re getting married it’s not like you feel that way anymore.” Feyre said nonchalantly gliding over to the table and grabbing a bit of fruit for her and Rhys.
You kept silent as your thoughts began to race. Did you still feel that way? Were you even ready to bare your soul to someone else? What if Tarquin changed his mind? What if eventually he finds you annoying just as Azriel did? Or worse what if he sees Elaine and redirects his affections to her just like Azriel did? Maybe Feyre was right, maybe you were to young to be getting married? After all you went away to get a break from love not to seek and find another one.
“Woman put your damn shields up!”
You flinched as the thought cut through your own. You recognised it to be Rhys you glanced to the side only to see him raise his eyebrows at you, as he said “Do it.” Through your mind.
Instantly you pictured a door and saw yourself slamming it shut. After being in the summer court for so long you had let your guard down in your mind, not having to worry about your daemati sister or her mate prying constantly. A hand scraped down your shields causing you to shiver at the imaginary touch. Feyre.
“Best to be more careful from now on, especially with this party coming up.”
You nodded in agreement at her warning.
You felt watched and turned your head to meet Azriels stare, his face emotionless and shadows looking untamed as you locked eyes before turning your head down to your fidgeting hands.
Little did you know Rhys was speaking to Azriel when your thoughts speared into the conversation. The shadow singer somehow managed to hear just about everything coursing through your mind.
***
Another perspective.
Azriels heart beat rapidly as his running pace picked up he had to get to her, he had to.
Everything was fine and normal at first, Azriel danced with Elaine slowly bringing her hand close to his chest and giving a light kiss to her cheek in the moonlight. She smiled her usual innocent one Azriel adored.
Though something didn’t seem right. He wasn’t a meant to be holding her. He want his to hold.
He was brought out of his trance as he heard a faint giggle as if it was far away, but the presence felt close. It echoed around for a second before he began to recognise it.
He turned his head Elaine still in his arms. As he saw her Y/N, dancing and giggling with two men. Her white dress flowed around her from the wind, she looked angelic. He wanted to go to her when he saw one of the men turn his head, wide eyed he stared in shock at the man who winked at him. It was his eldest brother he pulled Y/Ns hand to his lips and kissed it. She giggled again, it echoed all around the balcony as it did. That’s when his second brother began to lead her away. The setting changed to a cliff. Azriel tried to tug away from Elaine but she latched on. He turned his head back to her. All innocence and charm gone, instead replaced with mischief she looked almost mean as she stared him down. He looked at her confused “you picked Lucien.” He said shaking his head trying to step away. “That’s absurd. You’re being absurd Azriel.” She said sweetly once more. All while her sister was being taken away by his cruel brothers. Gods knows what they were planning to do to her.
“Let go Elaine.” He said trying to pull her hands off him. “Azriel, please I choose you. We can be together now. We don’t have to worry about her anymore.” Elaine’s voice echoed around them sweet and sinister. “I choose you.” He pushed her away and ran towards the direction y/n had went. “Azriel!” Elaine shrieked. He ran and ran over the hill now getting a clear view of her. Her laugh echoed as a whisper tore through the wind sweet and filled with love.
“Azriel.”
“Azriel.”
“Azriel.”
It was Y/N, he was sure of it.
“Azriel, please help me.” It didn’t sound pleading or scared but again like a lovers whisper.
His heart beat rapidly as her dress flowed through the wind. She glowed in the moonlight like she was ethereal. The closer he got the land seemed to stretch and the further they got. He stopped as he watched y/n stand near the cliff his eldest brother whispering something in her ear. She laughed again, it bouncing off Azriels ears. That’s when his younger brother came up from behind her and pushed her off the cliff.
“No!” Azriel yelled as he ran faster and launched himself off the cliff. Her scream tore through the wind echoing like everything else had.
“Help me!” She shouted as she fell, the rocks looked sharp as the waves crashed furiously against the cliff.
She reached her hand out to him but as she neared the ground realisation and hurt took over her features she pulled it back in to her chest as she fell faster.
“No!” He screamed, bellowed as he realised he could not reach her.
“Azriel.”
“Azriel.”
“Azriel.”
“Az! Man, WAKE UP!” He sat bolted up, drenched in sweat. He felt hands on his shoulders shaking him slightly. His shawls surrounded him before scattering at his silent command.
His eyes quickly adjusted to his surroundings.
He was in his room. He was in his room. Not on a cliff but in his room.
As his breathing calmed, Cassian decided now was finally a good time to speak up.
“Um are you okay?”
As if in answer Azriel got up and sped toward his bathroom. Spilling his guts down the toilet.
Cassian leaned against the door.
“Bad dream?” Azriel flushed the contents away before wiping his face with a tissue.
“No. I’ve had this dream before except it was different this time.” Az said getting up and brushing his teeth by the sink.
“Different? Different how?” Cassian said.
“Wait is this the dream where you’re dancing with y/n and Elaine’s falling off a cliff.” He said excitedly answering his own question.
“Yes but also no. There seems to have been a role swap. Somehow.” Az said trying not to give to much away. While he looked at himself in the mirror. Cassian came up behind him.
“Gods Az, you know I don’t speak in riddles.”
“It’s none of your concern brother.” Az said slapping his brother on the back as a term of endearment. Giving a half hearted smile doing so.
“What are you doing here anyway?” Az asked as he and Cassian walked back out to the bedroom.
“Only for something we’ve done literally every day of our lives.”
Cassian said looking at his brother worriedly.
“Oh right.” Az nodded while he began to sift through his drawers for his training clothes.
“This dream certainly has you in a tizzy brother.” Cassian said leaning back against the bed post while studying Azriels messed up sheets.
“Was it a sex dream.” He said with a smirk.
Azriel paused at what he was doing.
“No. And even if it was I wouldn’t be telling you about it.”
“Oh so it was a se-“
Cassian didn’t finish his sentence as you came in the door. You distractedly knocked against it while studying a series of envelopes in your hands.
You gave an exasperated sigh before saying “hey guys.” As you sorted through the envelopes and pulled out two. Azriel watched as you looked up and took in the room. Both Cassian and Az were completely shirtless and the sheets were a mess.
“Um sorry for interrupting but I have the wedding invites.”
You said reddening as you tried to look anywhere but at Azriel.
Cassian looked towards Azriel smiling mischievously.
“Gosh y/n, we could’ve been doing anything and you think it’s suitable to just come barging in here like that. Is this what you learned from those summer folk I could’ve been indecent!” He said flamboyantly pulling the sheets over his chest to somewhat cover himself as you laughed.
Az sensed your embarrassment and smiled slightly before making his face completely blank of emotion. It was a relief to see you that’s for sure, after the night he had. You were still in your pyjama’s from the night before black silk shorts with a black lace vest and a small silk dress robe hung off your body untied. He breathed deeply, thinking of your outfit yesterday, summer had certainly agreed with you and it was made very clear from the sight of your exposed chest and legs he had thought about all night…
He quickly averted his eyes down to your fuzzy slippers so the thought of you wouldn’t overcome him like it did last night. You handed Cassian his invitation before making your way to Azriel.
He hadn’t realised you’d been talking this entire time.
“Me and Mor have been at it all night making these.” You smiled before handing the invite to him. He grazed the end of your finger as he took the invite from you. You looked up and he was met with your startled gaze. His face must’ve been a mirror to yours with his own pulse racing at the light touch. You cleared your throat before pulling your hand away and letting go of the invite.
Cassian tore through it smiling widely, completely oblivious to the scene before him and Azriel a little bit more gracefully opened his.
~~~~~~~~***~~~~~~~~~
The high lord and future high lady of the summer court
Y/N + Tarquin
Request the pleasure of your company
On the eve of autumn
The nuptials will begin at sundown
A meal will be served after
At the high fae castle,
The summer court.
Azriel had forgotten all about the wedding. He wanted to crush the invitation and beg you not to marry Tarquin.
The day you left everything had changed.
Elaine had actually followed Lucien to his room the night you confessed your feelings, they began talking and Elaine had accepted the mating bond during the night.
She rushed to Azriel in tears the morning after apologising for leading him on for so long and not realising what she truly wanted- needed, was Lucien all along.
She said a part of her had felt hollow for so long but now it felt complete as if all her worry had disappeared.
As hurt as he was, Azriel wasn’t surprised. He wiped her tear stained face and forgave her. She was shocked but relived at his reaction. She looked at him with pity the adoration from the night before was evaporated. Now, that’s all he got from her, pitiful looks and guilty glances. She couldn’t even talk to him without apologising. But he didn’t want it nor did he need it. What he needed was right in front of him and she was set to be married. He needed to accept that he had once again missed the boat. He thought back to his time of loving Mor. Sure it hurt when she didn’t spare him a glance. But it was safe knowing that his heart couldn’t break anymore than it already had. Loving Mor had become a comfort. Loving Elaine had become a lesson. But loving Y/N, it was a coal walk and he was happy to burn for her.
Except like Mor, she would never know that.
After Y/N left, Cassian began sniffing the invite. Azriel scrunched his face.
“What are you doing?”
“What? It smells like flowers.” Azriel smelled it and it did indeed smell like flowers. Most likely Elaine’s doing. Which meant Y/N knew Elaine was with Lucien.
Which meant she really was over Azriel.
His heart sunk as he pulled on his training clothes and strapped in his daggers.
Was he cursed? Or just destined to be alone?
***
“You look beautiful y/n.” Feyre said as she watched by the door.
Tarquin had sent a dress. It was a tight mid length dress and turquoise blue. It was runched after the corset waist and had a small slit up the leg. It accentuated your chest, where a gifted diamond necklace sat above your bosom. Your hair fell in loose curls at the back and your make up was glamorous with a red lip.
You looked at her in the mirror smiling as you put on your matching earrings.
“I just hope I don’t have to stand in these heels for to long.” You laughed turning around.
She looked very high lady like. With her silver tiara and high slit dress that had a plunge neck. “You look.. you look like a high lady.” You smiled hugging her.
She laughed “I’m sure there’s a compliment in there somewhere.”
“A beautiful one of course.” You said beaming.
“God you’re so grown up. Not so much a little girl anymore, y/n.” She said pinching your face. She sighed a worried looking taking over her face.
“Feyre.”
“Yes?”
“We both know you’re not here to admire my dress. What do you want to talk about?”
You said waiting expectantly.
She let out an exasperated breathe.
“You’re not going to want to hear it.”
She said pulling at her sleeve.
“Come on sit.”
You said patting the bed as you sat at the end of it.
“Have you talked to Azriel since you’ve been back.” She said sitting next to you.
“Not really, why?” You said heart racing again.
“We’ll you should know something. Something that happened the day you left. It involves Elaine.” Feyre said holding your hand.
“What do you mean Elaine caught me up on everything that I missed, earlier today?” You said feeling dumb founded.
“What?” Feyre asked in disbelief.
“Yeah.” You said shrugging.
“So there wasn’t anything that jumped out to you?” Feyre asked.
You thought for a second.
“Are you talking about Nesta having that big fall out when Cassian stripped-“
“No.” Feyre said before you could finish taking.
“Something a little bit more serious than that.” She said furrowing her brows.
“Y/n, Elaine and Lucien have-“
“Are you guys ready to go? Everyone’s waiting!” Elaine said rushing through the door and pulling you up to your feet.
“Yeah, we’re just coming. Feyre what was it that you wanted to say.” You said turning back to her.
Unknowingly behind you Elaine gave a warning look to her.
“It was- it was nothing.” Feyre said confusion written all over her face but quickly covering it up with a smile aimed at you.
“Okay. Weird. I’m gonna go downstairs and get some champagne for the nerves. You guys want any.” You said standing before the door.
“No we’re good, we’ll meet you down there.”
You walked down the hall with a spring in your step. You were going to see Tarquin again! That’s all that mattered right now.
As you walked down the hall you saw Azriel in front of you. Practically skipping, you went to link arms with him just like you two used to do when going to things like this.
He flinched at your touch.
“Oh sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” You said pulling away awkwardly.
“It’s okay.” He mumbled.
You stood there for a second while contemplating what to say next.
“Elaine’s just-“ “you seem-“
You both began at the same time and laughed.
“You seem happy.” He said forcing a smile.
Not realising you said “I am. Now we’re even.”
He raised his eyebrows in question.
“Well I just mean you’re happy with Elaine- who’s down the hall by the way if you’re looking for her- and I’m happy with Tarquin.” You said beginning to fidget with your bracelet.
“Elaine?” He asked
“Elaine.” You answered looking around awkwardly.
He laughed humourlessly.
“Okay what’s going one first Feyres acting weird and now you are. Spill.”
He hesitated for a moment studying your your face. Inhaling your scent. Jasmine and lavender. He shook his head.
“Y/n me and Elaine haven’t been together in months. She accepted the mating bond with Lucien the night you..”
“Oh.”
“Oh.” Elaine said from behind you.
“Elaine, you’re with Lucien now?”
She nodded shyly.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I just I know you were in love with him-“
“Wait a minute you thought I was in love with who?!”
Now you were definitely confused.
“Lucien.” She said with a look of confusion.
“You thought i was in love with Lucien?”
You asked smiling at her and shaking your head.
“Well yes.” Elaine said worried now.
You walked up to her and threw your arms around her.
“Oh Elaine bless your sweet soul.” She laughed lightly as you pulled away.
“Im glad you’re not mad at me but I don’t understand if you weren’t in love with Lucien, then who were you in love with?” She said concern on her face.
You looked back to see him still standing there, face blank and shadows scattered. No hint that he cared for you to mention it.
You sighed. “It’s not important now.” You smiled sadly.
“What’s important now is that I need to get you two a gift.” You said while she linked arms with you.
Elaine and you chatted away down the hallway as Azriel stayed behind.
Rhys came up from behind him.
“Just tell her, Brother. Before it’s too late.”
Rhys patted his back.
“What’s the use? It’s not like she’ll change her mind now.” Azriel said walking with him.
“But at least you can tell yourself you tried this time.”
***
You had all winnowed to the summer court.
Tarquin hugged you tightly as you entered, just like any good future husband would do.
The party started well, you were introduced to every high lord of the courts along with their children and ladies. You were surrounded by your friends, you had more than you could want. Yet there was a nagging at your heart as if you weren’t really there, like a part of you was missing.
You slipped away from the party and went to get some fresh air from the balcony.
Sneaking through the familiar dream like doors you went and sat at the stone bench and watched the sunset. The air was a comforting cold, it reminded you of the summer nights you spent in the human lands.
You had started a small habit in the human lands along time ago. A boy you liked had once given you one after you skinny dipped together at the old river by your town. You were only fifteen then, now you were nearing 19. It was a secret habit. One you didn’t particularly want your sisters finding out about.
The nicotine coursed through you as the smoke tendrils flew away with the wind.
It was risky, doing it so close to the people you loved. But you had felt intensely stressed lately. With how fast everything was going, this felt like the only thing keeping you grounded.
“Well that can’t be good for you.” You hadn’t realised he was there, his wings were flared as if he had just been flying.
“I ought to report this back to Rhys.”
He said in all seriousness.
“Azriel please, don’t-“
“But then again I ought to do a lot of things.” He smirked coming to sit next to you on the bench.
You shook your head as you took another draw.
“I’m not proud of it. But lately it’s been the only thing keeping me sane.”
A comfortable silence surrounded the both of you.
“Can I try?” He asked.
It was child like. It made you laugh.
“Sure.” You said passing it over to him.
His hand touched yours slightly.
You looked up to see a longing in his hazel eyes.
“Just lift it to your lips and suck.” You said.
He looked at you with raised eyebrows.
“Not like that.” You said rolling your eyes.
He began to lift it to his lips in a weird way that made you shake your head.
“Here. You’re doing it wrong, let me.”
You said lightly taking it back and holding it up to him. He looked at you questioningly before pressing his lips to it. His eyes closed as he inhaled it. A crude thought passed through your mind at the position you two were in. You would’ve dreamed of this a couple of months ago.
His lips so close to your hand, your bodies turned towards each other as the sun fell behind the earth.
You were brought out of your thoughts when he let out a loud cough and another after that.
“Ugh gods thats disgusting.”
You laughed as you brought to your lips again.
“It’s not for everyone.”
You stumped it out and threw it over the balcony.
You began to walk back to the doors before Azriels words caught you off guard.
“Don’t do it.”
You turned towards him once more he dropped to his knees.
“Don’t marry him. I’m begging you.”
You looked down at him. He was utterly vulnerable.
“I know I fucked up. And you deserve better. You deserve a high lord. I know I do not deserve you. But you need to know that I will regret not fighting for you for the rest of my days. If there is any part of you that feels that same way you did all those months ago. Then just know I’m sorry for it.
I love you Y/N Acheron, I’m in love with you. I know that now.” He looked down shamefully when he finished.
Your heart banged against your chest. You wanted to desperately fall into his arms. To say that all was forgiven. To tell him that you still loved him too. To make the sadness leave his face. But you couldn’t hurt Tarquin like that. Not after tonight.
“Az, I’m sorry but I can’t- I just can’t.” You said tears falling.
“I will not be an option to my sister. Not when I’ve spent so long loving you. I can’t do it. I won’t.” You said voice breaking and finally walking away and back into the warmth of the summer court house.
Tarquin had spotted you first of course.
He came rushing over to you as he saw you wiping the tears from your eyes.
“Is everything okay, my love?”
You put on a smile.
“It’s perfect, I think I’m just overwhelmed.” You said holding his arms he put around you.
The door to the balcony quietly shut.
Yet it was loud enough for you to hear. He wants you to know he was there.
You didn’t turn to look at him instead you made Tarquin walk with you as you said “I think I’m ready for another drink now.” Laughing while he snaked his arm around your waist.
It took very part of you not to turn your head.
~*~*~*~
You are the youngest sister of the Archeron sisters. Only 18 now, you had narrowly avoided the cauldron as you had went to find your father during this time. During the war you were reunited with your sisters and met the inner circle. You witnessed your fathers death along with Nesta and Elaine. When the war was over you returned with your sisters to the city of Velaris it has since became your home. Over time you fell in love with Azriel and became close friends just as he fell in love with Elaine. You realised on the night of star fall and have tried to keep it to yourself since.
Part 1
The night of star fall one year later ***
The dress was gorgeous, a silver white that sparkles from the light of the lamp in your bedroom. You could’ve passed as a member of the winter court if you wanted to. The sheer cloak that fell from the sleeves made it look extravagant, you could tell the dress had a touch of Mor from the fact that it hugged you beautifully at the waist making every curve and ‘dent’ in your body known. You were after all human, compared to your sisters your hips were uneven and though your waist looked small it would never be near the size of your sisters. Naturally you became insecure around them. Any part of them that was ‘imperfect’ became perfected from the cauldron. On the day of the war you didn’t recognise them, you had actually thought you were fighting alongside complete strangers until Elaine gave you a bear gripping hug. You had earned many scars from that day, they were the only parts of your outer self that you were truly proud of. Azriel helped you to like that part of yourself, even though the man could barley stare at his own hands for longer than a second he encouraged you to be proud of your scars. Then that got you thinking. His hands. His hair. His smile. Him. You couldn’t stop thinking about him lately, it’s like you were consumed by your feelings. Though no one but Nesta and Cassian knew, you are certain a few of the inner circle knows something is up. You had realised yourself that your whole persona had changed, it always did when ever he was around. You were no longer confident and funny like you used to be. Sure you’ll still crack a joke or say something sarcastic now and again but you’ve mainly just became shy and unsure of yourself. Whenever you did say anything in a room of people your eyes would always go straight to him for some sort of subconscious approval. It was so bad that his reaction to anything you said could affect your whole mood for that day. One day when you were training with Nesta you had snapped at her out of nowhere. She had a feeling she knew what it was about and called you out for it. That was when you burst out crying and poured your heart out to her(Cassian happened to over hear) but he swore on the mother that he would never say anything. And so that brings you to today. The night of starfall, one year exactly after you realised you were in love with Azriel. You smiled at the thought it was some sort of anniversary considering he never even hinted or showed affection to you, you knew this was the closest you’d get to ever having an anniversary of anything with him. The thought of seeing him tonight and watching him dance with her made your stomach crawl and your heart twist with jealousy. That was the worst part of all of this he was in love with the one person you could never hate or discourage, Elaine. Beautiful, innocent and charming Elaine. You took one last glance over yourself in the mirror and gave out a heavy sigh. You didn’t even care about this night if anything being all together was just a reminder that you were alone. “Y/N!! Come on we’re having pre drinks!” Mor practically sang as you heard the clink of glasses and laughter coming down from the lounge room. You walked down stairs in your silver kitten heels clicking against the floor as the sheer part of your dress swayed down after you. You felt pretty and started to bubble with excitement as you descended the stairs there was no point in ruining your night because of the Non existent affections from a man. This starfall will be different, you won’t brood or sulk or whine that your feet hurt because this time you’re going to dance and make friends and drink and eat until your heart’s content. Maybe not content but a bit of fun wouldn’t kill you.
“Quick we’re making a toast!” Mor said shoving the glass of champagne in your hand. You took a sip and asked “what for?”
“What for?!” She snapped her head back to you.  it’s been a year since we all became a family!” Mor said looking stern. You’d lived there for a year and 5 months.
You gave a puzzled look to Rhys who was sitting with his arm lazily around his mate. He shook his head and rolled his eyes as if to say ‘don’t ask questions.’
You smiled and raised your glass as Mor began her toast, your eyes as usual searched for him only to see Elaine by herself sitting on the couch. You were about to go over to her when he swept in through the door and made his way to her. It was then you realised she had two glasses in her hands. He had a small red velvet box in his hand. He placed it in her hand as he took the glasses from her, her face lit up as she pulled a beautiful silver necklace with what looked like a small rose glistening at the centre piece of it. You only realised you were staring when Elaine caught your eye and smiled at you. You quickly gave a smile back and a little nod of your head as if you were admiring the necklace and not reeling at the scene in front of you. Az turned to smile at you brightly, he looked gorgeous somehow even more so now. The truth was you were good friends with everyone, each person here had a special place in your heart. Mor, Cassian, Nesta, Amren, Feyre, Rhys, Varian, Elaine and of course Azriel took the most space in that fragile little heart of yours. They really all felt like family and they all thought of you as family too. “You look gorgeous by the way.” Mor said linking your arms and walking over to another couch. That happened to be place directly in front of Elaine and Azriel. You smiled “Right back at you beautiful.” She smirked as she brought out the shot glasses.
“To starfall, my dear!” Mor cheered as she passed you one of the shots. You took it without making a face. The burning of the liquor seemed to make your heart race with adrenaline “I want one!” Cassian yelled coming over and sitting on the floor by your couch Mor poured 6 more shots as Rhys feyre and Nesta also joined. “To being able to drink again!” Feyre said before she downed it and winced at the taste. Nyx was finally old enough to not need breast fed anymore so Feyre was having her first drink tonight. You Cassian and Rhys had made bets on how many she could have before she was floored.
After a couple shots had been passed out you all were feeling a bit tipsy and the guests had began to arrive. Everyone giggled and made a cheery walk to the large balcony that looked over all of Velaris. The scene was bubbling with excitement, waiters were running frantically pouring drinks around trying to beat the clock of the the stars falling, ladies were finding men to hold onto for the night their dresses swishing flirtatiously as they did so. Tables with umbrellas all cream coloured were dotted around for those who wanted to sit during the dances. Men flirted, women blushed, glasses clinked, it was all so glamorous. You watched the stars fall alone and leant over the balcony to get a good view. You took a slow drink as you quietly appreciated the stars passing. That’s when a figure came and leant up next you. “Having a good time?” He smirked as you turned your head dreamily to him. He was leaning back against the balcony the stars reflected in his tinted green eyes and shined off his blue syphons that adorned his half gloved hands.
“Am I really that readable?” You said with a teasing note in your voice. “I don’t know about readable, but you sure were sucking the life out of those shot glasses.” He said this while you were mid sip. It was so out of nowhere you couldn’t help but laugh. He smiled as you tried to contain the drink from dribbling out your mouth. Whether it was the new found confidence from the drink or the fact you just read a book that used this line in it but you saw this as an opportunity to see him laugh, you took a mocking bow and said “ All the better to please you with my dear.” His head went back as he laughed at the innuendo you laughed with him. Music began playing from the orchestra that had just appeared, the stars became lesser and people began to dance to the slow music. “Y/n.” He said leaning on the balcony with you once more. “will you do me the honour-“ you quickly interpreted and said “the honour?!”
“The honour.” He stated with a laugh. “Of having this first dance with me.” He finished, smiling smugly while holding out his hand. You gave a fake gasp hand coming to your heart and swigging the last of your champagne. “Thee Azriel, Shadow singer and spymaster of the Night court, wants to dance with little old me?” you said, voice dripping with sarcasm as you gave a look of fake shock. He rolled his eyes and grabbed your hand then pulled you to the dance floor you gave a small squeal as a waiter caught your glass before it fell off the balcony and smashed. “Sorry!” You called back as Az rushed you two to the dance floor weaving in and out of people as he did so. You had found a good place when his hand went to your waist as his other went to hold your hand he hesitated for a second before you practically grabbed on to it with your own. He laughed at the gesture and you two began twirling round the dance floor along with all the other couples. He was much more taller than you, everyone was in fairness because of their immortality. But your heels gave you a bit of a lift so that you were up to his neck. He smiled down at you as the music began to get faster paced and the room twirled with the two of you. For a second it felt like it was just you and him, the rest of the world disappeared as he twirled you and dipped you down in the dance. It was for him of course platonic but to you it was a dream and a silly fantasy you had thought of over and over coming to life. Except in your fantasy by the end of this night you were up against the wall being fuc-
“I’ve got next dance!” Elaine called at the side as the music came to a slow stop your eyes were locked together all giddiness now gone and you two let go of each other almost immediately like you had been caught doing something wrong. You gave a small laugh as you said “He’s all yours.” And he was. The statement hit a nerve in you but you shoved it deep down as you walked over to the table the inner circle had occupied for the night. You grabbed another glass of champagne before sitting down next to Nesta having full view of the dance floor. “Are you alright?” She asked. She had never been this caring towards you before ever since that rough patch, when you made it your mission to visit her in that old apartment every day because no one else would she’s treated you differently more sisterly than ever. “Fine.” You said downing the champagne. “Oh yeah, that looks like fine.” She said tutting at you as you did so. Cassian then leaned over the both of you his arm slinging around Nestas shoulder and the other going round yours. “Are you guys taking about azriel again because y/n honestly I think you should just tell him.” He said slurring his words. Great he was drunk and spilling your secrets how could this night possibly go wrong. “Shhh!“ you and Nesta both said as he leaned over lazily with his eyes closing slightly. “What? We all know you love him!” He smiled. “Cassian!” Nesta chastised him and swatted the back of his head. “Ow!” “Don’t be so loud about it then you big baby!” Nesta said furious at him.
During their argument your eyes fixed to Elaine and Azriel they danced elegantly though it looked too perfect in your eyes as if it was practiced repeatedly. Though the way she smiled up at him was nothing but pure adoration and the way he looked at her gave you the motivation to fight an army. That’s when you saw Lucien slouching in a seat by the wall his glass in hand as he took small sips while watching the scene before him. You couldn’t help but think whoever invited him here had to have been in the mood for drama. The man was unpredictable, he could start a fight at any moment because of the mating bond. You felt bad for the poor soul. “Hey why’s Lucien here?” You asked absent minded, hands fidgeting with your glass. “Feyre invited him.” Nesta said while Cassian pulled up a chair and rested his head on her shoulder. Her hand went to his hair as he kissed her shoulder. You looked at azriel and then Lucien and began contemplating for a moment. “What are you planning?” Nesta said still running her hand through Cassians locks. “Hmm.. oh nothing. Nothing.” You said coming out of your thoughts. “Y/n.” She warned. “Don’t go causing a scene especially for what you plan on doing tomorrow.” She said sternly. “I was just thinking maybe Lucien would like to dance.” You said getting up from your chair innocently. “I really don’t think that’s a good idea.” Nesta said raising her brow at you. “Oh you don’t? Shame.” You smirked and strutted off to Lucien, your eyes watching as Azriel brought Elaine’s hand up to his mouth and kissed it. “Y/n.” Nesta hissed at you as you began to near Lucien, you turned back and beamed at her then went back to Lucien. He sat there slumped for a moment not bothering to acknowledge your presence. “What is it? Has Feyre sent you to check up on me? Cause I’m great.” He said clearly not at all feeling great. “Actually I came to ask if you’d like to dance.” He looked up at you with disdain. That’s when you began to stutter, suddenly the confidence left you and the weight of the situation began to fall on to you. Elaine was going to be pissed. “Sorry you don’t have to I was just wondering-“ you said hands beginning to fidget. “I’d love to.” He said setting down his glass and standing upright he too towers over you not in the same romantic way but it was kind of a nice perk to being the only human in the group. You smiled as you lead him to the dance floor you got into the right position and began slow dancing together. You talked and laughed, you asked about his eye then he asked about Elaine. He said you looked a lot like her which made you feel a bit uncomfortable but you managed to crack a joke and laugh it off. You felt sorry for Lucien , your heart felt like it was breaking every time you saw Azriel and Elaine together, whatever he was going through had to feel ten times worse. “Are you dancing with me out of pity?“ he said looking down at you. You sighed and looked up to him. “Honestly, no I’m using you to make my own person jealous. Sorry.” you said seriously with a shrug of your shoulders. This time he laughed practically bellowed actually, that’s when he admitted he only accepted your dance for the same reason. You smiled and shook your head. “Well let’s at least give them a run for their money.” With that Lucien picked you up in his arms and twirled you around the dance floor. That’s when the music picked up and you began spinning each other in and out of each other’s arms obnoxiously bumping into people while laughing and having to say sorry. By the end of it you were both in bits clinging to each other for dear life as you almost tripped over your dress for the second time. That’s when you felt the feeling of being watched and looked to your left only to find Elaine’s arm crossed scowling at the two of you. Azriel standing close behind her also with a sour look on his face. You saw his knuckles clench as he looked at you. What was he mad about it?
Lucien laughed next to you and smiled as he said “I think I’ve had enough fun for one night.” And with that he bent slightly to kiss your hand. With a sad smile on his face as he said “thank you y/n, it’s been a pleasure to dance with you.” You could’ve cried for him. But still he gave Feyre and Rhys a wave goodbye and swaggered out the door. You smiled sadly at that. Lucien was to be admired not pitied, he could have declined on Feyre’s invite but he was so much of a good friend that he still came. You only wished that you could at least be half as classy about your own situation. Suddenly your shoulder was grabbed and you were yanked away the opposite direction Lucien left. “What were you doing dancing with him y/n?” Elaine said with Azriel close behind her. “What do you mean? He’s aloud to have fun too Elaine!” You half yelled at your sister. She had no right or reason to be mad at you. “Yes he is but not with you, y/n.” She said scowling. “You’re my sister for goodness sakes and he’s my mate! It’s weird!” She said becoming exasperated. “I’m so-“ you began but she cut you off with the wave of her hand. “Save it. I’ve had enough for one night. I’m going to bed, no one follow me.” She said rubbing her temple.
“Elaine I’m sorry!” You called after her but Az grabbed you by the wrist before you could follow her. “I think you’ve done enough for one night y/n.” His gruff voice said. You couldn’t meet his eye not when you were the reason his night was ruined. You looked down shamefully, then waited a moment so Elaine could get up the stairs without you passing her and mumbled that you were going to bed. His hand left your wrist and suddenly It felt colder even walking in the house the feeling didn’t shake as you wrapped your arms around myself. “Y/n wait.” Az said as you neared the end of the hall. You stopped mid step contemplating whether or not it was wise to turn around. You turned just as he made his way up to you. “What is it?” You asked now meeting his eye. “What was that about? Why did you dance with Lucien? All it did was make Elaine feel bad.” He stated.
“I didn’t do it to make her feel bad-“
“Then why did you do it?”
“I don’t-“
“Don’t you dare say you don’t know because you know fine well that you do.”
“He just looked lonely, that’s all I felt bad-“
“Bullshit.”
“Is not I-“
“Is so a month go you said you didn’t like him.”
“Stop interrupting me-“
“No.”
You huffed frustratedly. As he folded his arms and looked smugly at you. As if to say he won. Screw it he wants to play a game of who can shut up who first you would give him a game.
“You really wanna know why I did it?” You said leaning against the wall.
“Finally, yes.” He sighed.
You shook your head and smiled. “nah I don’t think you do.” And turned on your heel to go down the next hall.
“What? No I’m a meant to be annoying you remember.” He said rushing to get ahead of you so he was standing in the way.
You laughed. “You trying to annoy me? Gosh I hate to break it to you but you’ve just brought fists to a sword fight darling.” This time it was your turn to be smug.
He looked you up and down.” You’re right being annoying is you’re thing, can’t argue with that.” He shrugged and then turned on his heel.
That’s only when you realised what trap he made you walk into.
“Hey!” You said running after him to get in his way.
“Ugh still here.” He gave a fake exasperated look.
“Oh shut up, I can’t believe you just called me annoying.” You said swatting at his arm. He bent down to your height like the giant that he is and smiled teasingly.
“Well, you are. You annoyed me. You annoyed your sister and Lucien left early, why? Cause you’re annoying.” He said playfully. Except this time you didn’t feel like playing along.
He went round you and sauntered down the hall as you stood there utterly shocked at the revelation. Maybe he did find you annoying, maybe that is actually why Lucien left so early not because he was worried about Elaine’s reaction but because he genuinely didn’t know how to get rid of you without going to bed. Maybe that’s why Nesta feels so bad because she knows it’s the reason why Az doesn’t like you. Maybe it’s you that’s been the issue this whole time. If you weren’t so loud or boyish all of the time maybe you’d actually have a chance with Azriel or any man for that matter. Maybe if you were anything like your sisters and not such an odd ball all of the time, love wouldn’t be this hard.
“Come on y/n I was joking, are you coming to bed or what?” He said stopping in his tracks to look back at you.
Like glass breaking, all your emotions came fizzling up bursting to get out as you whispered “Is that why you’re with her?”
“What?” He asked bewilderment taking over his features.
“Is that why you’re with her?” You repeated louder this time.
“Who? Elaine. Well not being annoying is a contributing factor but it’s not the only reason-“
“No I mean instead of me.” You turned around walking up to him.
“Are you with her because I was to annoying for you?”
His mouth went agape and he blinked slowly as if the realisation hit.
“You want to know why I danced Lucien? It wasn’t to make Elaine feel bad or even make Lucien feel better. It was to make you feel bad Az.” Your tears began to fall the uncontrollable pain you had felt all year had finally bubbled up to surface.
“I’m in love with you and I have been for a long time. I’m sorry but I can’t do it anymore. I can’t- I can’t watch you with her and pretend that it doesn’t hurt.”
He stood in silence you could see he was contemplating on what to say next.
“And that’s why I’m leaving.”
“Leaving? You can’t leave?”
“Y/N please I’m sorry if I haven’t been a good friend or i- I did something to upset you but don’t leave because of me.” You let him ramble, never seeing him so flustered it was the most you’ve heard him talk in all your time of knowing him. Usually it would be an answer or a statement but it seemed he was for once not thinking about what he was saying.
When he realised you wouldn’t answer a foreign silence fell between you both as you looked down shamefully.
“Does Feyre know?” He asked quietly.
You nodded in answer, relief washed over your body as you wiped your remaining tears away.
“Rhys actually organised it.”
“Where are you going?”
“The summer court.”
“When?”
“Dawn. Apparently they have a thing for when the sun comes up.” You said giving a breathy laugh trying to lighten the mood.
He gave you a sad smile.
“Im sorry too.” He said leaning on the wall next to you.
“It’s not your fault, you have no reason to feel bad about this. I just need to take some time away and get over it.” You said returning the same smile.
With that you began to leave until he called out to you.
“Y/n.” You stopped and turned only to be enveloped by his arms. He waited a moment before he spoke.
“I’m really going to miss seeing you every day.” Your heart sunk. Even though he didn’t feel the same way a part of you had hoped he changed his mind in those few small seconds. The warmth of him left you as you pulled away and said goodnight.
