Lady Loki

Dragon*Con 2012

When I decided to do a Loki costume, I’ll admit, I wasn’t familiar with the comics. I just wasn’t really a comics girl growing up (I was REALLY sheltered- no kids at my tiny school read comics outside of say, The Far Side or Calvin & Hobbes). So I knew, vaguely, about the character of Lady Loki, but when I started my extensive research, wasn’t really a fan of her whole ensemble. Costumes designed by comic artists can look fabulous on paper, but just don’t translate well. The Asgardian costumes designed by Alexandra Byrne, however, were extremely appealing. The armor, the interweaving fabrics, all the little details were just fascinating to me. In fact, this was one of those costumes that the more research I did (and oh boy, did I research), the more excited I got.

My research started out with Hiddleston’s Avengers costume, but progressed into the history of the Lady Loki in the comics, which moved on to Sif in the films. I also researched other designers’ weird/otherworldly costumes, like Susan Hilferty’s “Wicked” and the elves from “Lord of the Rings” (see: interweaving fabrics/metals), as well as Alexander McQueen’s final collection. It doesn’t mean I incorporated those designers’ elements, but that’s how my brain works: I want to explore every possible design avenue.

So, yeah. After much much much research, and tons of sketching, I finally came up with a Lady Loki design that incorporated elements from both comic- and movie-verse Loki, as well as movie Sif. The complete breakdown is all up there in the sketch. I spent A LOT of time researching, y’all.

Some things were happy accidents: I was having the worst possible time settling on a skirt design. I ended up accidentally adding those center panels made out of the patterned leather & gold maille…stuff, and it’s probably one of my favorite parts of the whole shebang. Overall, this whole costume process was waaaay more organic than my usual MO, and while that made it waaaay more stressful, it also made the finished product that more satisfactory.

I’m waiting (hoping) for a good snow day around here so I can take her out and get some actual pictures, but for now, these will have to suffice. 

Our Dragon*Con group was all gender-bent Avengers, but unfortunately for our shenanigans, our Littlest Hulk & Coulson couldn’t make it this year. However, as sirrogue put it: “…you know we’ll be back. And in greater numbers.”

You guys are great! I'm doing a survey and I'd like your input...what is your favorite ice cream? Do you even have that in Asgard, I'm sure you do as all delightful things are in Asgard!

Hahaha! We do indeed have many wondrous things, but I would not say all! We do not, for instance, possess the "coffee" that Thor has become so fond of. As for Ice Cream, we have a certain dish consisting of shaved flavored ice and fruit, but your "Popsicles" as Jane called them, put our attempts to shame!

Volstagg watched the streak of fire shooting back into the sky, carrying the woman beneath in a shiny metal sack. It appeared to be a man, his entire body wreathed in flames!

Midgard never fails to surprise, he thought.

The woman cried out again as the man pulled her higher. Jane?! he realized with a shock. "Jane!" he heard Fandral shout. So no, he had not been mistaken. If anyone would know what had become of Thor and the others, it was her.

"Come on!" Volstagg cried through his beard. "We have to get up there!" The burning man (but no, he did not appear to burn, though his flesh writhed with fire) and Jane had disappeared through a window at the very top of the building.

But before they could begin to devise a plan, there came a soft clicking and shuffling noise. Volstagg suddenly realized that in their excitement about Jane, they had forgotten the swarm of afflicted Midgardians that now had them completely surrounded.

"Uh oh." he murmured.
