Sustainable Art Show
So I took part in my first art exhibition since my final show during second year. I was contacted by a peer on my course and asked if I’d like to participate in their upcoming show. The key themes were sustainability and environment. I decided to use a mix of photography and poetry for my piece. Using Polaroid’s I had taken on a recent trip to Kew Gardens as the imagery. I thought about about the current climate and how if everyone made small changes to their daily lives the world would be in a better state. Compassion often takes a backseat in people’s minds. We’re consuming at a rate that the planet cannot keep up with. Soon there’ll be nothing left. I wanted this piece to carry that message. I’m pleased with the overall aesthetic of this work, although I wish the poem was printed instead of handwritten. I’m excited to get back to university and develop my practice in the studio.

You Made Me
You made me a victim
You made me weak
Even now I am frail.
In the face of mistreatment
I always give second
Third
Fourth
Fifth
Sixth
Seventh
Chances.
I am a welcome mat
For those who do not love me
There is this desperate unquenchable thirst to be loved
That is hardwired into me
You put it there when you left.
I do not miss you
If I knew you better
I’d miss you even less
Everyone who took your place after
Only added to the wires.
My short circuiting was inevitable
How can you be raised
By someone’s absence.

Phoenix
I am not a Phoenix
Phoenixes are glorious
They are victorious
I am bitter
I am cruel
I did not endure bravely
I simply survived
Not out of optimism
Or wishful thinking
My motivation was purely
Spite
I exist to defy
Everyone who caused me harm
Every person who diminished me
I pushed myself beyond breaking
To do things they said I couldn’t
I survived so that one day
I will out live them
So I can know peace
When they are dead.
