Hey creepy kids! Real T update: sorry for not posting much. I'm trying to wrap my brain around things, isolate and still take care of doggos. Just like everyone, I'm exhausted and drained. I haven't been feeling up to working on my art and that makes me feel awful. But I keep telling myself that there is still time enough for that. I have to practice what I preach and accept my feelings. Right now, taking care of my health and being kind to myself is my #1 priority. If that means laying low and distracting myself with horror movies, then so be it. My depression and anxiety are vulnerable right now and it's not a good idea for me to poke those bears by getting in my head about being a shitty creative. I've never been able to focus enough to be productive when in times in crisis. So I'm riding this wave for now, but I'm starting to feel the itch. Having a rough day. Thing is, even though I take measures to manage my depression, sometimes it can still get the best of me. Today is one of those days.. . In need of some comfort, I consulted the Art Oracle cards. This is exactly what I need. Inspiration from one of the greatest unsung feminists, Artemisia Gentileschi. . My issue is struggling with my emotions. For as I encourage others to embrace their messiness, I'm still a work in progress myself. My personal hurdle is accepting myself. Artemisia reminds me that my emotions are nothing to be ashamed of. She reminds me to fight back and take care of myself. . My takeaway: "History has your back, society stabs you in it." As I mentioned previously, I want to decoupage real comments that real women have heard - misogynistic, outdated, insensitive, irritating, whatever.⠀ . ⠀ Going a step further, I really want all of your submissions to be hand written - to underscore that this is not "militant feminism" or "over sensitivity". As an artist, I am not really interested in being "known", per se. It's more important that I express myself - communicate my feelings and vision. ⠀ .⠀ Even so, if people don't KNOW my name, how will I get my art out there? Sometimes it's hard to see others take off around me while I still feel stuck in the same lane. It really isn't jealousy - it's more, "what's wrong with me?"⠀ .⠀ Before this turns into a pity party, understand that these are passing thoughts, not how I feel all the time. But I think this quote struck me because it's a reminder of my purpose. I'm not trying to be popular or famous. I have a message that I want to share with others: be authentic, be honest, be vulnerable. The people that matter wil find you because of that - they're YOUR people. ⠀ .⠀ It's not my path to be popular. My flaws and challenges say more about who I am than my successes do. If one person has the courage to be themselves because I stumbled, then my job is done. I'm proud of my work even if I am not in lots of big shows or galleries. I'm working on getting back into a goal writing mood. I've never been great at it anyway, but I am determined to take my business to the next level. ⠀ .⠀ The goals themselves aren't really a problem. It's coming up with the steps that I need to take in order to reach my goal. How do you create steps when you are trying something that's completely new?⠀ .⠀ There's no instruction manual for professional artists. How amazing if there was! There are many different paths that an artist may take - an infinite number of tools and techniques. But they aren't One Size Fits All. It takes a lot of work - trial and error, really - to figure out what works for ME.⠀ .⠀ Right now I'm working on breaking down big goals into smaller ones, and so on and so forth. All right, ladies, I need your help! I finished this piece, "Be a Good Girl" with your assistance, but I have never really felt like it was truly finished. I think I know what it needs now...⠀ .⠀ I saw a video of actress, Cynthia Nixon, reciting a powerful poem called, "Be a Lady, They Said". There were various fashion photos of women shown as she recited the poem - extreme examples of fashion. I started to think of decoupaging fashion ads on the frame. I may still do that, but more importantly, I want to decoupage written words. ⠀ .⠀ So this is what I need from you, sisters: I want to collect phrases, words, comments from REAL women. Misogynistic things that have really been said to you or antiquated notions of women that really get under your skin. Happy #throwbackthursday! I found another of my skateboards from the Boarded Up show. This one was created for the show in 2015. This baby has also found a new home. I'm glad because, creatively, this was a little out of my comfort zone.⠀ .⠀ I tried something a little different for this one. I was inspired by the idea of looking at endings as possibilities for new opportunities. Seeing the transformation of a caterpillar into a chrysalis and finally into a butterfly is a perfect analogy. ⠀ .⠀ This one is titled, "Every Ending Is a New Beginning". It is a bit of a mantra of mine. It's a good reminder that change is good. It is necessary in order to grow.
