At the same time she was setting her own side of the camp, Akio simply sat down on the gravel near the lake itself. Listening to her closely while his eyes scanner their surroundings for a moment. He recalled the crossroads they might come across after their rest, if luck was on their side, they will have a smooth travel or at least minimal pushback.
Yet, the sudden display of magic did make him look back at her. Seeing her use magic was quite the relief, it meant that she probably had access to some offensive magic if something were to happen. Akio would still do his job at to keep her from harm, but knowing she can probably defend herself was a good bonus. "Sometimes the job is worth getting your hands dirty for, makes things much interesting and tell a better story."
Her next question made him hum for a moment. Thinking of a proper response to give her before saying anything. "I used to be part of this small group of "Knights", or so we called ourselves back then. Most of what we did was hunting down any monsters or help out any village we came across. Sort of like an independent group that worked more for the people." Adjusting himself, Akio stood up and patted his jacket and pants from any gravel that may have stuck to him.
"But after some bad dealings, we disbanded. So now I am trying to still hold that torch in my own way. While also treating it as an adventure itself, I have quite my fair share of stories you know!" The pride in his voice was only matched with body language. A cocky smirk plus pointing at himself with his thumb. "I am an excellent storyteller, all from experience, too."
[Fantasy Verse]
When he heard about the job opportunity to escort someone to a nearby site. As far as he was aware, all it described was a meeting place and the individual he was keeping an eye out for. It wasn't his first time watching over a scholar or even a team of them, but to be a high-grade mercenary and see a job like this must be the person is quite important. Regardless, whoever this individual is, Akio kept his sights on the price and who knows. Maybe a meet up might help him get connections elsewhere.
A carriage pulled up to the crossroads where he was to meet. The door opened and the footman assisted a red cloaked woman to the ground. She eyed Akio up and down. “You’re to be my guard?” She asked. She was carrying an unassuming travel pack, but it included some tubes that probably held maps or other large documents. “I expected more, if I’m being honest.”
She turned to face the direction of travel, a road that snaked off into the distant mountains. “Hopefully you’re worth your weight in gold. It’s be foolish if I had to turn you back early. Come along.” She started walking.

With a quick mock salute, Akio felt rather accomplished to have his suggestion be taken into account. Most scholars he has dealt with were quick to judge otherwise, maybe Lady Hiara isn't as mean as her glare makes her be. "Sounds like a plan, let us get this travel started." While the first day was uneventful. Unlucky Gisha, Akio was actually quite social to those they came across, small talk or passing greetings. Akio liked using this time to see if he could get a scope of what is around or the talk of the road. You never know when someone might slip something useful. And speaking of useful, they found themselves in a nice camping spot.
"No worries ma'am, I will be sure to you ample privacy. Just be sure to call out if you need anything." Akio found himself setting his stuff at the appropriate distance in order to give Gisha her requested space. "If you don't mind me askin' what makes you lot travel so much lately? Here I thought the war on the south or the recent attacks may deter such educated folk like you from the roads. But with you, that's the third scholar I've met recently, you guys don't seem to catch a break." His tone was casual as ever, almost as if he was willingly ignoring her titles and goals for sake of conversation.

It was quite something seeing Oleander personally make a request like this, whatever item she lost to the seas must be of great value. Her presence, while strangely threatening for an offer, seemed to hold a level of annoyance. If whoever this person of group of people were managed to make Oleander show this much expression, fake or not, he wouldn't be surprised if they were never heard of again.
"I can do it, I am an excellent diver and Bilgewater has helped be deal with sea creatures." Akio said with confidence, reaching over for his drink before taking a sip from it to refresh himself. "However, I must say two things for you about it. First one being that I hope your package was waterproof or something, if it was lost in battle and thrown to sea, lets hope the water damage won't hurt it as much" This time, he reached back to his weapon and held it at his side, partially stabbing it into the ground as he leaned on it. "Second, I must go by a workshop to pick up a different weapon for the seas. As much as I love my gunblade, I don't want to risk it getting damaged underwater." After that, he stood up, accidentally being the one tower over her now, Akio stretched a little to loosen up his shoulders.
"You can come with if you want, gives us a chance to chat about whatever this thing looks like so it easier for me to find it."
"WHOA-" Akio wasn't one to scare easily, he has fought and faced some horrid things. Even been in terrifying situations, hell some of the friends he has made can be considered scary. But to be sneaked upon by Oleander did make him flinch.
Almost enough for him to break his spell and splash both of them, almost. But he looked over to see Oleander, a mild surprised expression on him. "Jeesh, I swear, you get quieter the more I spend time with you." Properly dispelling his water magic to avoid accidents, he now fully turned to face her.
"Anyway, yeah, I can swim really well. What do you need?"

At first he was taken aback by her mature nature, but at least she wasn't rude about it, god knows how many times Akio has taken care of the snobby type of researchers. Thankfully she was more to the point and straightforward. "Aye Aye Lady madam Hiara, you can just call me Akio or merc, I don't mind either way." His tone was lighthearted, clearly understanding her words but choosing to keep things simple.
Once she pulled out the map, Akio couldn't help but to lean in a little. Impressed by the quality of the map, he followed the path she was describing of their journey. Listening closely to her words about the potential for highwaymen and other ill-intending people they might come acorss.
"If you don't mind," Akio said at first, as if letting her know ahead of time that he moved his hand closer to the map. Without touching it, he pointed at their original path, as if tracing over it before stopping at a crossroads. "If we turn here, we will continue along as normal. But because merchants travel that same road, we might come across more issues. I suggest keeping straight on the corssroads, might take us another half-day to get there, but is less likely to get attacked there if you are worried about encounters like that."

He looked down at the cloaked woman as she came out of the carrige. She was smaller than he expected a researcher to be, a bit meaner too, considering her neutral expression. He didn't have much time to reply before she gave her piece and continued to walk down the path. Akio himself carried some supplies for the travel ahead, mostly a courier pack that contained any food or light traveling they may need.
Regardless, he moved up to her side while they walked, keeping up with her pace. "Well now, nice to meet you too ma'am. Gisha, was it?" Akio began some small talk. It's better to know who you are working with while you have the time. "And no worries, I can assure you my services are well worth the gold. I will make sure to watch your back as you do your scholar things." His tone of voice did have a high level of confidence in it. The way he walked and carried himself definitely shows he is proud of his skills.

Truly Akio's worst enemy, boredom.

After finalizing the spell, Akio looked back at her as she spoke. Noticing how she rubbed her eyes along her worried tone of voice, he really couldn't help but to worry more about his friend. While his spell truly helped out with the main wound, he felt like extending an extra offering for her. Akio reached his hand out for her, a gesture to help her stand up if she could.
"Then we better make haste, my friend," he said in kindness, wanting to give her a better sense of reassurance now that the dangers have passed. "Can you stand? Or would you like me to carry you until we arrive to the Capital?" Akio offered. Maybe some extra rest would help her, they have been on the road for a while and now that they were close to their objective, it was best to do the last push.
Akio knew she was stronger than she looked, hearing her stories and experiences solidified that thought. However, she was still a gentle soul, and Akio will treat her with the grateful kindness she seemed to be lacking in her stories.
~ cont. from here @aquatic-hybrid
The oracle finally looked up for a second, searching for the gaze of the other; but she turned way too fast for their eyes to lock. Finding him so focused on his healing spell made her feel one more clench in the chest. She preferred to focus on the soothing feeling as well instead, and try to get enough just from the encouragements and the calm voice.
"I'm in your hands," she murmured, her voice haunted by worries instead. But, to avoid making things worse, she was determined to make at least an effort. She gulped and rubbed her eyes with one hand, preventing any tear from falling. "We're not too far from the capital. The Echo Woods are full of driders, but if we keep following the river it shouldn't take too long. Deadbridge is close."
The safety of the city is near, with the Blue Marquis and the counselor by her side watching over it all. Friendly faces, maybe a cure for his curse. It was all worth it.

He will be the first to admit fault in this situation, their encounter was just a bit more rough than Akio expected. In his mind, he let his guard down for a moment, and that exact moment was the cause of Lia's injury. Sure, they both got a few hits or scratches, no fight is ever clean. But this specific injury was caused by his own lack of vision. Causing his traveling companion to be injured in the process, that along stung more than any injury.
His tendency to play the hero can also be his biggest downfall, watching her cry out as the blade got her, and now she looked crestfallen because of it. That took a tool on his mental state, but he was quick to brush it to the back of his head. Now he was focused on healing her, needing to find a quick place to rest off the road, Akio was able to secure a small area near a cluster of trees, away from prying eyes.
"Easy there Lia, I got you." Akio said gently, his sword stabbed into the ground nearby as he used his own magic to heal her. Such a soothing sensation came from his spells, a vast contrast to his offensive usage of his magic. "I am sorry, I should've been more careful out there. But you will heal up nicely, my friend, it will only take a moment more."
It is impressive how different he sounds, from the boisterous and confident voice she has heard him use with civilians and enemies alike. His was now a soothing and gentle voice, as if the calm waves of the ocean were speaking to her, trying to ease her mind away from whatever sadness was plaguing it.
🛑
The oracle remained still and kept her eyes shut as Akio mended her wounds. It had been instinct to step in and cover his back with her body when her magic couldn't deviate all the shots aimed at him. It wasn't the wisest choice, but she had one job - to protect him while he took care of the fighters. She did. And they both came out alive, so...
No. She was clearly unhappy with the outcome. She promised herself that the episode with Roktor would have been her last act of blind recklessness. She couldn't afford to... She didn't even want to think about it. The cold eyes of the goddess of final judgement flashed in her mind, and so did her words in her ears: 'this is your last chance.'
Use it well.
With that grave reminder in mind, she couldn't even look Akio in the eye or share a word beyond the many thanks she extended at the beginning of the treatment. It was horrible. She hadn't learnt a thing.

To say Akio enters a little tomfoolery on his missions could be understandable, maybe a little taunt here and there, some unneeded spins for no particular reason. Today was no different of course, during a mission he was partaking, there was a jukebox playing music at this bar he currently was in. Playing some good fast pace tunes while Akio was also in the middle of a fight in said bar.
What made this fight more unique compared to others, was the moment Akio punched someone so hard they went flying into the jukebox. Instead of breaking it however, it made the music a tad louder and slightly more fast pace. Which seemed to take over the Half-Marai as he used the momentum of the punch itself to hit some fresh moves. As if the music itself took over the sharkboy, Akio was now breakdancing mid-fight, such a display of utter disrespect for his opponents and the mission as a whole. He kept the fight going and was actively winning.
