In the Original Beauty & the Beast, the story is about sacrificial love. In the Live Action, it’s about freedom. One is fundamentally selfless, the other is not.
Tumblr media
In the Original The Little Mermaid, Ariel is willing to sacrifice everything to go where she is understood (by Eric.) In the Live Action, Ariel is willing to sacrifice a few things to go where she can explore some more. Another “let’s change the main theme from love to freedom.”
Tumblr media
In the Original Mulan, Mulan left her family to save her father and prove she could do things right—when all along, her father loved her regardless of how well she performed. In the Live Action, Mulan left her family to save her father—even though all along she had chi superpowers that she was dying to use anyway. Once more, the remake subtly shifts so that the main character values something within themself, taking the spotlight off of sacrificial love.
Tumblr media
In the Original Aladdin, Jasmine teaches Aladdin trust. In the Live Action, Jasmine teaches Aladdin nothing because she’s busy wanting to be Sultan.
What I’m saying is, it used to be enough for female characters to have actual character and integrity, and their stories highlighted those aspects of their nature. Then every other character in the movie learns from or changes because of the Princess’ heart. Nowadays, her character is not powerful. It’s what she does, what she forces and fights her way into, that is focused on—usually to the detriment of all the other characters around her.
In Aladdin, the main character does not believe anyone will see him for who he really is and still choose him. He doesn’t trust anyone in Agrabah to love him the way he is. But when Jasmine first meets him, she trusts him. When she sees him again as a suitor, she trusts him again, despite knowing he lied to her. When he is faced with the reality that he, not Jasmine, has to be Sultan, that’s when he wakes up and realizes that not only does he have to trust Jasmine with the truth, but he can trust her with the truth the way she trusts him.
In Beauty and the Beast, the Beast starts out hopeless and brutal, and then gains hope. Not because Belle talks him into it with powerful-woman speeches or savage one-liners. Not because she hunts down the Enchantress and defeats her, breaking the spell. But because the Beast witnesses that Belle is the kind of woman who’s love and compassion would give up freedom. He’s betting that kind of love can break his curse, even though he started the movie with “who could ever learn to love a Beast?” And then her continued love for him teaches him how to love her, sacrificially.
In The Little Mermaid, Ariel sacrifices her tail and her safety to have a chance at being with Eric—because she knows she understands him, and he can understand her. That, in turn, reinforces Eric’s one big character trait: he believes in the idea of “the right girl” and when he learns that Ariel is a mermaid who saved his life, he sacrifices his life and safety for her, too.
I can go on and on.
My point is: If you’re a Princess in a Remake, you make decisions based on what you want, not on what you love.
Unless you’re Cinderella.

WALT DISNEY PRODUCTION WORKERS NEED YOUR HELP!
Tumblr media
Hey fam! The Mouse is refusing to recognize the unionization efforts of its production workers. If you're not familiar with what PAs or PMs do, I'll outline it briefly. The tl;dr is that NO ANIMATION WOULD GET DONE WITHOUT PRODUCTION WORKERS. They are the glue holding together every single production of your very favorite cartoons!
They take notes in all the meetings with the artists.
They make sure the artists are meeting their deadlines (and showing up to the meetings in the first place).
They help us navigate studio servers to find the files we're looking for.
They send us our time cards, and make sure we get paid!
Production workers do all this and more, often for minimum wage. The hardships that they suffer as a result--the long hours, the unpaid overtime, the abuses of power--are horrific.
You'd really think that they'd be compensated fairly for these jobs! Can you imagine trying to live in Los Angeles or New York on minimum wage with a job that definitely won't allow you time to pick up a second or third one??
This has to stop, and you can help.
All that Walt Disney Animation Studio's production workers ask is that you add your name to this petition! That's it.
This isn't some Change.org petition. It's not going to sell your email to spam companies. This is through IATSE (our union)'s website.
TELL DISNEY YOU STAND WITH PRODUCTION WORKERS!!!

Is it worth getting the Hollywood Babylon book (i forgot if there was 1 or 2 but..) i know there's some stuff about bobby there, although unpleasant but i was wondering if it's worth getting the book or if someone has posted it somewhere bc i found nothing online of it !!
If you want info on Bobby, the one to get is Hollywood Babylon Strikes Back. And yeah, there is nothing of it online. That is pretty much the only place you will find much of that information. The first Hollywood Babylon also has a section on Bobby, but to my memory, it doesn't go into the sexual abuse allegations

Have you looked into the rape and animal abuse accusations against Jim Cummings? It really bothers me how quickly all of it was covered up and forgotten.
I’ve never even heard of that. I’ll have to look into it when I get home from work

Do you think Walt was sexually abusing Annette Funicello?
No. According to what I've read he was into younger boys. There's accounts of him hiring teenage male prostitutes

Have you seen this video?! youtube(.)com/watch?v=AFRm-h3qLk0 it talks about bobby around 30:29 and I watched it and am now horrified :( I did NOT know any of this. Thanks to videos like that and your tumblr, I'm learning so much but it is heartbreaking! I just wanted to say I appreciate what you're doing <3 I wish there was a documentary or biopic about him and his life but it seems too late to get sources that knew him. Wish he went ahead with that idea he had about writing a book..
If you want to see a Bobby documentary there is one on YouTube called Lost Boy: The Bobby Driscoll Story, and it interviews some people who knew him.
Also, yes to that video you linked

I didn't watch a modern Disney Animated Canon movie since Treasure Planet / Lilo & Stitch (Forgot which one of them came later) because I stopped enjoying them. I was mostly watching the old movies through VODs and stuff. But learning about and reading all this stuff about Bobby Driscol just made me not want to pay for anything Disney ever again. Knowing that this company was shitty even while Walt himself was still alive broke me. Can you please write a list of every company they brought?
I know what you mean. The thought of going to Disneyland makes me sick, even though it was a dream of mine to go (well, they ruined it anyways)
Anyways, Disney owns:
ABC (including ABC News)
MGM
Fox
Star Wars
the Muppets
Marvel
Mirimax Films
Pixar

The studio that made the 90' Anne Frank anime movie (There's also a 70' Anne Frank anime movie but i'm pretty sure that one is a lost media) is Madhouse Studios. :)
Oh, It's from the 90's. That's why the animation is actually good.

Once again, Adum at YourMovieSucks knocks it out the park!!!
Calls out, not only the terrible animation and lazy jokes, but my favourite line;
“So, if they weren’t directly commenting on Bobby Driscoll, then we have to admit that this movie isn’t self aware. And if they were, they are kind of pieces of shit for doing so”
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

That's true, you won't find them on google.
You need to buy the book Hollywood Babylon Strikes Back. I got my copy on thriftbooks.
You may also want to get Hollywood Babylon 2 and Hollywood Kids by Aylseworth

Is it the 1hr 28 mins movie “Anne Frank’s Diary” on YT? If so, I’m not sure. The IMDb page says the production companies are A-N Production Committee, Animation Production Multimedia Investment, Associated Studios Global Toon Network, Brookfield BS, Cleeve Studios, Globe Trotter Network
Oh boy gang, it looks like we've got another mystery on our hands
(seriously weird that it wouldn't be obvious who made it tho)

Hello! To the ask that asked for animation studios that aren’t disney or dreamworks, Sony (Spiderverse, Mitchells v the Machines), Laika (Coraline, Kubo and the Two Strings), and Cartoon Saloon (Wolkwalkers, Song of The Sea) are good! I also highly suggest anime films and studios as well since they pump up some critically acclaimed stuff.
who made that Ann Frank animated movie on YouTube? That was really good. Anybody know?

For the anon, I would suggest Cartoon Saloon, who made beautiful films like The Breadwinner, Wolfwalkers, and Secret of the Kells.

Hey! I was wondering if you had any recommendations for animation studios that aren't Disney or DreamWorks? It seems like they're impossible to find, buried under the mouses propaganda.
Sorry, I wish I could help, but I really don't know any quality animation studios making good feature films at the moment
