Im pretty sure its about the mania of the American groupie scene and how Robert felt like it was almost fake.

“Her face his cracked from smiling, all the fears that she’s been hiding, and it seems that pretty soon, everybody’s gonna know…”

Those are the opening lines, and that is pretty sad to me. It describes a girl running away from her pain into a scene that is destructive and toxic. I always thought that when Robert sings the happy lyrics it’s almost in mockery/pitty, “my my my, I’m so happy, I’m gonna join the band.”

In the end it’s a song and we can all interpret it in different ways! Before I actually read through the lyrics I thought it was a happy song about hippies running wild and being free and making music. But I definitely changed my mind on that one.

(Also i was too lazy to google the lyrics so this is off the top of my head, please correct me if I’m wrong on any of these!)
