Ruby: Why you never invite me for a sleep over? I want to see your place!
Chelsea's place:
Do you think Chelsea is homeless?
Like, where's she living? All other mermaids somewhere far off in the sea, she's all alone, with nobody to crash with. Was she just living under the bridge or something?
Considering after the war all mermaids separated and gone hiding and even one of the directors of the film already confirmed Chelsea wasn't lying about being alone for years yeah i think it's safe to say that she was indeed homeless. Since she is more of a sea creature i assume she would sleep in an underwater cave or something. I really feel bad for her when i think about that. Imagine acting all cool during the day like everything in your life is perfect while searching for a safe place to sleep all by yourself at nights. It's not that hard to read the emotions on her face when she is with Ruby, in all that acting she was still genuinely enjoying not being alone and having fun with someone who understands her. I'll never forgive writers for wasting all her development at the very end for a stupid twist 😢
Ok, I´m back updating this post after some time now.
So this alt version of the final fight between Ruby and Chelsea where they kept the concept of the "Rings of Currents".
Even though it plays out fairly similar to these two versions:

There´s something I like about this one, is that small chat Ruby has with Chelsea where she points out how glad she was of being her friend despite where they got now, since Chelsea was the one that made her realized who her true self was rather what Agatha or Grandmamah wanted her to be.
Just think about it, in the final version, even if Chelsea manipulated Ruby to get her the trident, she also was the one who...
Reached out to her when she felt confused about being a sea creature, so she knew she wasn´t alone.
Made her realize being a Kraken was something she should be proud of.
The entire trident´s plan was what truly convinced Ruby to train her abilities
the TL;DR would be that Chelsea even as a villain, gave Ruby the whole arc she needed to become a heroine, and in the long run, if the ocean needs someone to stand up and protect it, Ruby will be there, and all that thanks to Chelsea.
So yeah, I think it´s pretty cool that Ruby on the climax of their fight recognizes not only the bad, but also the good Chelsea did for her.
As a last point, there´s also Chelsea´s fate here, which was kinda... half cooked?
She just let her swim away like nothing happened... and after that what? she just exiles herself with no family to go to? she stays on Oceanside and keeps in touch with Ruby after that as a possible segway for a redemption? they didn´t made themselves clear.
It´s still better of what they did with the other 2, where Ruby just throws Chelsea into the sea floor and imprisons her, leave her to be forgotten and probably starve... sorry, but considering that, was that version of Ruby any better than Grandmamah? would be the same as killing her but with some steps in between.
Going back to the final version, I think that they got the best outcome for Chelsea on the end, not only for comedy, but also for Ruby as a character, the moment she decided to spare Chelsea´s life and stop Grandmamah from frying her shows that she´s willing to stop the cycle of war her family had with the mermaids since forever, and I think that´s neat.
(Sorry if this post is all over the place, I tried to cover 3 videos in one, and there was a lot of "I like this from this one, but didn´t like this" and also wanted to highlight some things I feel the final version actually did right)

Despite liking a lot the bonding scene we got on the actual movie, the one on the early draft feels way more complete.
Besides showing them on the sea like in the actual movie, it´s not limited to just them swimming around but also doing some other things related to them being sea creatures (the blowhole scene was kinda fun).
There´s also the boardwalk scene, Ruby has spent her whole life on land up to that point and still it seems she never stepped in that part of town until she met Chelsea, and it´s just filled with them playing carnival games, eating lunch, taking pics and recording silly videos together. I think the draft version really took advantage of the word "TEENAGE" slapped in the name of the movie.
And what not, the earlier designs are great, the beanie and jacket really ties together Ruby´s look, and Chelsea´s pretty similar to her final design besides the hair (I prefer the long hair tho).
I´ve seen a lot of posts pointing out how these early versions of Ruby and Chelsea resemble a lot to Anne and Sasha from Amphibia, and they are right, you have the duo of a friend who´s a bit of a push over teamed up with the friend who´s somewhat irresponsible and still cares a lot for her friends.
I really hope more and more material from the early drafts of this movie surface in the following months, it gives me a lot of Zootopia vibes being both movies with a dark first draft that had to be toned down for the final version.
I did Ruby´s spidersona (The Kraken Spider) some week ago, and I wasn´t going to leave Chelsea out of the fun. Since Spiderman needs some enemies, I decided to give my favorite mermaid the bases of one of my favorite Spiderman´s villains: Venom.
The concept here is that Chelsea is her regular self, Ruby´s friend and all of that teenage stuff, and after getting in contact with the trident, the symbiote that used to host on her mother Nerissa, who was dormant inside the trident, wakes up and takes Chelsea as it´s new host.

"All right, let´s do this one last time.
My name is Ruby Gillman, and for the last month-or-so I´ve been the one and only Kraken Spider.
A couple of things happened:
I had an argument with my parents, met my uncle and grandma after 15 years of not knowing anything about that side of my family, got the news I have a throne to my name under the sea, met Chelsea, my best friend... she tried to kill me and the rest of my family, we had a big kaiju fight, I won and stopped my grandma from turning her into a hot n´ crispy fish stick and declared to my crush on prom.
My movie had... a rough time on cinema, but digital sales were really good and gathered a really solid fanbase, who keeps insisting I should be dating Chelsea, despite she being CRAZY... not gonna lie, she´s pretty cute tho".
