I think the bicycle helmet discourse really just reinforces the idea that people believe that accidents only happen to the stupid and careless, and that people who get hurt somehow deserve it. And since nobody wants to believe themselves to be stupid, or thinks they could be careless or distracted, it's not necessary to take precautions.
And then they take safety advice as an insult because telling someone to be safe is seen as an accusation of being stupid and irresponsible, and not just a value neutral acknowledgement of statistical inevitably. We see it with masks, and seatbelts, and now bicycle helmets because everyone wants to believe they're too clever to get hurt, and too lucky to get hurt badly, until suddenly you're not and you have to resign, in shame, to being one of the people you previously saw as annoying nags, assuming you're even still alive.

Abusers don’t come with warning labels.  Abusers don’t hit you on the first date. They don’t write “I will humiliate and belittle you” on their Tinder profiles. They don’t wear “I break things to intimidate my partner” t-shirts. People don’t get trapped in damaging relationships because they saw an abuser coming from 20 yards away and decided “I’m going to date that person anyway”. That’s not how any of this works.  In the beginning, abusers can be some of the most thoughtful, attentive people you’ll ever meet. They’re obsessed with you; that’s what makes them so toxic and deadly as time goes on. Abusers buy you flowers. They remember your birthday. They remember to text you “good morning” and “good night”. They listen to your problems, confide in you and share silly inside jokes. They can keep that “loving, doting partner and best friend” mask in place for months or years if they have to.  So the first time they scream at you or hit you, you don’t see an abuser. You see your best friend, your confidante, the person who brought you soup when you were sick and always laughs at your stories about your nutty coworker. You tell yourself they just had a bad day. Maybe they were tired, sick, hungry, or under a lot of stress. You know them. You’ve made a life with them. And they’re so sorry and so ashamed of what they did. This isn’t who they are.  And so things go back to back to normal for a while. Wonderful, even. This is still one of the best relationships you’ve ever been in, even counting that one incident. You go back to date nights, cozy nights in and 5-hour-long conversations that feel effortless. And then it happens again.  And you still don’t see an abuser. You see the person who means the most to you in the whole world. You decide that maybe they’re just struggling. Maybe they have mental health issues. They’ve told you every horrible thing that’s ever happened to them as a child, and maybe it has something to do with that. But either way, they’re not an abuser. Not yet. They’re just a person who needs you more than ever.  Then things are good for a while. Then something bad happens. Then it’s good again. Then it’s bad. Good. Bad. Good. Bad. And every time it happens, it gets a little harder to get out. The time you’ve invested in the relationship goes up, and your self-esteem goes down. By the time you realize that, yes, the person you thought you knew is an Abuser with a capital A, you’re in deep. You’re a frog that stood in a pot of water so long it turned you into soup before you even noticed it was getting a little warm. But you didn’t ask for this. And you certainly didn’t know it was coming.  We have this image in our heads of what abusers must look like. We picture brawny men with low foreheads and stained white tank tops, screaming at their wives while they drink beer in front of the TV. We think they’re like wildlife, as if we could spot them with the help of a guidebook and know to stay far away from them. But they’re not. Abusers can be anyone. They can be female. They can be accomplished. They can be well-groomed. Queer. Politically far-left. Politically far-right. Artists. Athletic. Charitable. Intelligent. They can come from any walk of life, any spot on the gender spectrum, any religion, any background. It’s not the abused person’s fault for not spotting them - they can’t always be spotted. It’s the abuser’s fault for abusing.

Plenary Indulgence
They whispered to her. Memories of a long dead dream. Echos of a dying soul. Right there, on the edge of her consciousness. She could almost reach out to grasp them. To take them in hand like a child chasing fairyflies. Alas; as soon as her fingers were extended--right on the cusp of surrounding the elusive lights-- they skittered away. The mage could hear the hissing of a coiled snake. They were trapped. They wished to flee. They could feel the traces of him in her soul, recognized the lingering scent of him that clung to her skin. He was the enemy. It was not to be tolerated.
Fingers tapped the surface of her oaken desk, and blue eyes stared at the smooth ivory surface of the soul crystal. Patience had ever been her virtue, but this—this had certainly tested it. It sang to her. It called to her. It begged her for release. But when she tried to give it, the power only fled. Slender hands cupped her face, and the woman pinched the bridge of her nose, pushing her spectacles up. She had been at this for hours. All afternoon, as it happened. Locked away in her office and free of distractions. It was foolish to think that the thing would be without security measures. She had expected some manner of enchantment. The outer wards had been dispelled almost too easily.
Raine bit back a sigh of frustration. It had been an unexpected hurdle. Never had she imagined that the soul bond she shared with her husband would cause such interference. It had always been a source of strength. Always a blessing. Never a curse. She would not give it up. All the power in the world wasn’t worth it. She would simply try again.
Steady, easy, slow. The elezen took care to steady her breathing, tightened the control on her thoughts. And then she reached out again. It was just a tiny thread of aether. A careful coaxing of the enchantment on the ancient stone. The war is over. The danger is long past. In her mind, memories swirled. She had made a pilgrimage once, some years ago. It had been a much-needed escape from Ishgard, just after the end of the war. She had seen what remained of Amdapor. It was a ruin of its former glory. A burned-out shell with nothing left but relics of an age gone by. She expected the same could be said of Mhach, judging by the tales she’d heard of The Weeping City.
The mage kept up the pressure, slowly funneling more aether into the crystal in her hands. Just a little push. Open the door. Show me your secrets. She strengthened the thread, little by little. Bit by bit. And then the floodgates opened. For a moment Raine could see it all. The memories of years, the techniques lost to time, the faces of those lost spread out before her like an intricate, glittering web.
And then the trap sprung, and all was lost in a brilliant flood of light.

[Balmung] All Saints’ Wake Continental Circus Presents: “The Sinister Soiree!”   October 31st from 8PM EST to 11PM EST Haukee Manor, Central Shroud
The Continetal Circus is back!  It’s All Saints’ Wake And it seems the rumors are true The theater in Gridania is empty Where did the Continental Circus move? It seems true that there will be no official All Saints Wake event this year, and because the Circus NPCs are some of our favorite characters, we’ve decided to try our own version, with an All Saints Wake Circus event at the steps of the Haunted Manor!
The Continental Circus is back in town! But not in their usual spot. Reporters from the Raven have spotted the Circus setting up outside Haukke Manor. And while some holiday fans are flocking to the new location others are staying away. Rumors circulate that some people who have visited the circus this year have disappeared! Could it have anything to do with the strange hedges that seem to be taking over the Haunted Manor?
While troupe leader,  Impresario, assures the public that everything is all right; and this years All Saints’ Wake Circus will be just as spooky and fun as all the rest, things just seem to be a little…. off. Uncover the mystery, explore the Haunted Manor, play some games, and show off your most spooky costume at the Sinister Soiree!
Activities will include: A story tour through the Haunted Manor (OOC location: Goblet W6, P5), games and vendors, a story mystery, a Circus Troupe Performance, and a spooky costume contest!  There will be a raffle: the winner gets their choice of All Saints Wake items from the Mogstation.  The winner of the costume contest will get a drawing of their character in their costume!
We are looking for game runners, vendors, and circus cast members! Would you like to take part in the Circus? Join our discord, please: https://discord.gg/zudDS7Y
