SCHOLAR AND SAINT-IQBAL’S VIEW

Poetry of Iqbal contains a great secret. That secret is related to Muslims’ success in the world and the

hereafter. Sometimes he is giving the message of “wake up from deep slumber” to the youth, hence

reminding them of the grandeur of the ancestors. At times he is exhorting them to inculcate the

attributes of falcon in themselves. Sometimes he is advising them to become the confidant of “khudi”

whereas at times he is guiding them to become pure of the desires of houris and castles. In short, Iqbal’s

poetry is replete with the desire for the betterment of Muslim umma. In his poetry, we would see a

beautiful comparison between two groups or characters as well. This depicts his unmatchable creativity,

artistic and imaginative qualities. For example competition between Divine love and intellect, seeker of

the world and seeker of Allah, asceticism and Divine love, paradise and the hereafter, discord between

a Saint and a scholar, conversation between man and Allah, difference between fake guides and the

Universal Divine Man and similar topics.

His renowned book “Shikwa Jawab-e-Shikwa” is also based on these topics. Iqbal has also discussed the

difference between the Saints who are seekers of Allah and the religious scholars who are seekers of

paradise and hereafter. The purpose of this article is to discuss this topic particularly.

Who is a religious scholar?

According to Allama Iqbal, the religious scholar is that person whose main objective is to achieve the

blessings of the paradise. Physically he follows shariah but inwardly he neither has gnosis of Allah nor

does he enlighten his inward with self-recognition. He performs excessive prayers and indulges himself

in long devotions and forty day seclusions, the purpose of which is only to increase his disciples and gain

money. In reality, such so called religious scholars are away from the Divine love.

Allama Iqbal says about today’s scholar of Islam:

اك مولوی صاحب كی سناتا ہوں كہانی

تیزی نہیں منظور طبیعت كی دكھانی

شہرہ تھا بہت آپ كی صوفی منشی كا

كرتے تھے ادب ان كا اعالی و ادانی

كہتے تھے پنہاں ہے تصوف میں شریعت

جس طرح كہ الفاظ میں مظمر ہوں معانی

لبریز مے زہد سے تھی دل كی صراحی

تھی تہ میں كہیں درد خیالی ہمہ دانی

كرتے تھے بیاں آپ كرامات كا اپنی

منظور تھی تعداد مریدوں كی بڑھانی

Explanation:

Let me tell you a story about a scholar without any ambition to air my wit. The scholar was

famous for his sainthood. The rich and poor both respected him. The scholar used to say that the gnosis

of Allah is hidden in shariah just as the meanings are hidden in the words. Performing long devotions

had filled his inward with the wine of asceticism. Inside him, he had the pride of knowledge. He narrated

the stories of his miracles to people to increase his devotees. (Virtue and Vice)

On the contrary, the Saint aspires for vision and closeness of Allah in his every devotion. In his point of

view the meaning of success in the world and the hereafter is not in getting the pleasures of hereafter,

houris, castles and other paradisiacal blessings. Instead, he considers chasing all these as a trade with

Allah. The trade in which man gets the blessings of hereafter in return of his prayers but remains

deprived of the vision and gnosis of Allah.

Iqbal says in his book “Bang-e-Dara” to the scholar of Islam

سوداگری نہیں یہ عبادت خدا كی ہے

اے بے خبر! جزا كی تمنا بھی چھوڑ دے

واعظ كمالِ ترك سے ملتی ہے یاں مراد

دنیا جو چھوڑ دی ہے تو عقبیٰ بھی چھوڑ دے

جس كا عمل ہے بے غرض، اس كی جزا كچھ اور ہے

حور و خیام سے گزر، بادہ و جام سے گزر

Explanation:

This is the worship of the Lord, not a trade. O oblivious! Refrain from having even the

smallest anticipation of benefit. O preacher! Destination is guaranteed by complete sacrifice of

everything for Allah. So, give up desires of the hereafter like you have renounced those of the world!

Give up the attractions of heaven. Be selfless in your actions (and just desire for the Divine Essence)

since the prize is incalculably valuable. (The Call of the Marching Bell)

Each person would get reward according to his desire. Now, it is up to man that he desires the hereafter

or the vision of Allah.

Allama Iqbal verses in “Payam-e-Mashriq” about the special desire that is the desire of Allah:

ہست ایں میكدہ و دعوتِ عام است اینجا

قسمت بادہ باندازۂ جامِ است اینجا

Meaning: Explanation:

The world is a tavern and it is open for all to drink (the wine of Divine vision).

Hence, everyone gets his share of wine according to his cup (desire). (Message From the East)

On the day of Divine covenant, Allah placed world and its beauty on one Hand and the hereafter on the

other Hand. The souls who diverted their attention from Allah to the world, considered the world as

their paradise and advanced towards it whereas the souls who inclined towards the hereafter stepped

towards it but some souls neither looked towards the world nor the hereafter. They only wished for the Divine vision.

مَا کَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ اَبَاۤ اَحَدٍ مِّنۡ رِّجَالِکُمۡ وَ لٰکِنۡ رَّسُوۡلَ اللّٰہِ وَ خَاتَمَ النَّبِیّٖنَ ؕ (الْأَحْزَاب‏ – 40)

Meaning: Mohammad (blessings and peace be upon him) is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Last of the Prophets (ending the chain of the Prophets). (33: 40)

When Allah created the universe in desire to be recognised, he sent man as His vicegerent to this earth. He also sent Prophets and Messengers to guide man towards Allah’s gnosis so that he could spend his life following the commands of Allah. In this regard, Prophet Adam (as) is the first Prophet and Prophet Mohammad is the last Prophet and Messenger. No Prophet or Messenger will come after the seal of Prophethood (peace be upon him). The sharia of Holy Prophet and the Holy Quran revealed upon him are the source of guidance till the occurrence of the final day. Prophet Mohammad sall’Allahu alayhi wa’alihi wasallam is eternally alive. After his sacred physical demise, he manifests in every era according to that era’s grandeur, in the beings of perfect individuals. Mohammadan assembly is held esoterically even today in the same way as it was held in his lifetime. The true adherers of Islam firmly believe that the Holy Prophet is alive. Moreover, this is the core of the belief in the finality of Prophethood (Khatm-e-Nabuwwat).

The chain of Prophethood has concluded on me. There will be no prophet or messenger after me.

My parable with the previous Prophets is like that of a man who built a house and adorned it beautifully but left an empty niche, in the corner where just one brick was missing. People looked around the house and admired its beauty, but wondered why a brick was missing from that niche? I am like that one missing brick, and I am the last in the line of Prophets. (Bukhari)

Abu Hurairah relates that the Holy Prophet said:

I have been given superiority over the other Prophets in six respects:

I have been endowed with the gift of pithy and perfect speech.

I have been helped by fear (in the hearts of enemies).

The spoils of war have been made lawful on me.

The earth has been made a means of purification and a place of worship for me (i.e., offering of prayers is not confined to certain specified places of worship. Prayers can be offered at any place on the earth. And in case water is not available it is lawful for my people to perform ablutions with earth (tayammum) and to cleanse themselves with the soil if water for bathing is scarce).

I have been sent by Allah to carry his Divine message to all mankind and the line of Prophets has come to its end on me. (Muslim)

Belief of Muslims

Muslims believe that their success lies in spending life under the guidance of Quran and Hadith, and Quran and Hadiths are testimony to the fact that Holy Prophet is the Seal of the Prophets. A true Muslim’s belief should also be that the Holy Prophet was sent as a Messenger to all nations and all human beings on earth. The Holy Quran revealed upon him canceled all the mandates of the previous Holy books, and it is complete and comprehensive in the commands and laws of all future matters. That is to say, the final commands of Allah have been revealed and the chain of Prophethood has ended, after which neither the revelation of Allah has been sent to anyone nor will it be sent to anyone in the future.

Quran and Hadiths are evidence to the end of Prophethood

The Holy Quran and Hadiths leave no scope to question or deny the end of Prophethood. It is such a unanimous belief that according to Imam Abu Hanifa, even asking for an argument or a miracle from the claimant of Prophethood after the Holy Prophet is infidelity. During the lifetime of the Holy Prophet when Musaylima al-Kadhdhab (Musaylama the Liar) claimed false Prophethood, the Holy Prophet did not hesitate to suppress his claim. The Companions waged a war on him during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr and gave him his just deserts.

Rise of Qadiani Fitna

Muslims are so firm in their belief of the finality of Prophethood that they do not tolerate any tampering with it. If someone does this, they fight to defend it according to the commands of Allah and do not hesitate to sacrifice their lives for it.

In subcontinent, the polytheists and the disbelievers hatched dangerous conspiracies against Islam and Muslims to root out from their hearts the belief in finality of Prophethood and to halt their spirit of jihad. However, upon failing in their attempts, they employed a secret agent under a clever and well-thought-out strategy. This agent was Muslim in his physical appearance but infidel in heart just like them. He made hypocritical attempts to change the ideology of Muslims in order to distort their belief in the finality of Prophethood. But Allah has always helped Muslims. Therefore, they understood that the British government had plotted this fitna against them. If its roots were deepened, it could cause damage to Islam.

This fitna was none other than Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani and his Qadiani movement. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani was the agent of British government who they had appointed to hurt the unwavering faith of the Muslims in the finality of Prophethood.

Plot of the British government against Muslims

In 1869, the British government sent a delegation of members of the British Parliament, administrators of British newspapers and representatives of the Church of England, to India to find a way to weaken the beliefs of the Muslims here and rule them forever. This delegation stayed in the subcontinent for a year and examined the particulars from different angles.

In 1870, a meeting was conducted in London in which this delegation presented two reports titled The Origin of British Empire in India. The abstract of these reports was that the Muslims regard the followers of other religions as disbelievers and consider it their religious duty to wage jihad against them. Since for Muslims, the British government is the government of disbelievers, therefore they remain employed in mutiny and jihad against this government. This causes difficulties for the British government. Therefore, to conquer these Muslims, they need to find someone who lives among Muslims as one of them but works in favor of the British government. Only then they could weaken their faith and keep them from jihad. Through this strategy the British government intended to accomplish two things:

Firstly, this agent will claim Prophethood and propagate to the masses the fabricated revelation sent down to him.

After winning the devotion from the Muslims, he will declare that Allah has revealed upon him that jihad has now become unlawful.

Belief in the Finality of Prophethood and Qadianism

Search for an agent

In view of these reports, British government passed orders to search for a suitable person who could provide services for their stability in the subcontinent and who would take their commands as a revelation. The task for this search got assigned to a Sialkot’s Jewish Deputy Commissioner Parkinson, who, after a thorough search with the help of Central Intelligence called four people to his office to interview them. Ultimately Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani was chosen to pursue British interests. And then began his official patronage.

Why British chose Mirza Qadiani?

Now the question is why Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiyani was chosen out of four other people. The answer is found in his books:

I come from a family which is out and out loyal to this government. My father, Mirza Ghulam Murtaza, who was considered its well-wisher, used to be granted a chair in the governor’s court and has been mentioned by Mr. Griffin in his History of the Princes of Punjab. In 1857 he helped the British government beyond his power. That is, he procured cavaliers and horses right during the time of mutiny. He was considered by the government to be its loyal supporter and well-wisher. Then, after the death of my father, my elder brother Mirza Ghulam Qadir continually occupied himself with service to the government.” (Kitab al-Bariyya - Roohani Khazain)

At another instance, he cites: Majority of my life has been spent in the support of British government. I have written so many books against jihad and have issued so many pamphlets that if they were all collected, fifty shelves could be filled. I have sent all such books to countries like Arabia, Egypt, Syria, Kabul and Rome. (Tiryaq-ul-qalub, Roohani Khazain)

I believe that as my followers grow, the believers of jihad will reduce because accepting me as Messiah and Mahdi is in fact the denying of jihad. (Tabligh-e-Risalat)

I have been emphasizing in my writings for sixteen years that conforming to the British government is obligatory on Muslims while jihad is forbidden. (Tabligh-e-Risalat). These scripts are part of the letters and books which Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani wrote to prove his loyalty to the British government. Hence it is clear that he was their loyal agent.

Formation of Ahmadiyya Movement

With the support of British government, Mirza declared that he was the promised Messiah and Mahdi of the last era. When people did not confront him strongly and instead tried to debate with him, he thought of it as their weakness, so he took a step further and declared himself the last prophet.

In 1888, he claimed to have been given a Divine command to establish a community (jamaat) by formally accepting allegiance from his supporters. Thus, on March 23, 1889, he executed the malicious planning of forming Ahmadiyya movement by taking his first pledge in Ludhiana.

The lies of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani

Since the British knew that no one would believe this fool without arguments, so they insisted on adopting a method for which no testimony was needed, and which would turn the hearts of Muslims. Following this plan, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani began to term his mental retardation as a Divine inspiration. He cites his self-proclaimed inspiration and writes:

I saw an angel in the form of a twenty-year old man. His face resembled the British and he was sitting on a desk chair. I told him, “you are beautiful.” He said, “yes I am worth seeing.” (Tadhkirah)

I recall inspiration at one instance. It was in English. And said, “I love you.” Then I heard, “I shall help you.” Then, “I am with you.” Yet again, I heard, “I’ll do what I can.

” Then my body began to shiver, and I heard, “We will do what we can.”

Is that how ordinary the Divine inspirations are? Undoubtedly not! Divine inspirations are pure and Allah reveals them only on pure inwards

Words of a Prophet touch the hearts

Every sacred word spoken by the beloved Prophet of Allah is so fine and pure that it touches the heart. He undoubtedly receives the revelations of Allah through angels, but His grandeur is unparalleled and far beyond angels. Often angels gain knowledge from the Prophet (peace be upon him).

One day while the Holy Prophet was sitting in the company of some people, Angel Gabriel came to him in human form and asked, “What is faith?” Allah's Messenger replied, “Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His Apostles, and to believe in the day of resurrection." (Muslim)

In this Hadith, Angel Gabriel asked many other questions. When he left, the Holy Prophet told his Companions that he was Angel Gabriel.

The lies of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani

All the Holy books before the Quran contained testimonies that Prophet Mohammad will be the last Prophet. None of the books referred to any Prophet after him. Similarly, in the Holy Quran there is a confirmation of all previous Holy books. Also, it is a condition of faith to believe in all previous Holy books. By declaring himself a prophet, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad denied his faith on previous Holy books which excludes him out of fold of Islam. He was apparently calling himself a Muslim but inwardly plotting evils against Muslims and was leaving no stone unturned to cause damage to Islam. As Allah says in the Holy Quran:

And amongst people there are (also) some who say: ‘We believe in Allah and the Last Day,’ whereas they are not (at all) believers. They seek to deceive Allah (i.e., the Messenger) and the believers, but (in fact) they deceive only themselves and they are not aware of it. In their hearts is a disease. So, Allah has worsened their disease. And for them, there is painful punishment because they used to tell lies. When it is said to them: ‘Do not spread disorder in the land,’ they say: ‘It is we who reform.’ Beware! (Truly) it is they who spread disorder, but they do not have any sense (of it) at all. (2: 8-12)

Immoralities of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani

Not only the content of his speech was objectionable, but his style and mannerism were also equally repulsive and completely unbefitting of a good human being. He would vent his anger at people who disagreed with him by hurling nasty abuses at them. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani had appointed various women for his services which is evident from the writings of his supporters.

When the accursed Mirza began to be exposed with arguments from the Muslim scholars, he began to express his anger:

These scholars are the most impure of all the animals in the world and deserve to be looked down upon.

O the dead scholars and filthy souls! Woe unto thee, O the worms of darkness.

Sadly, this unsound minded person bashed the teachings of Islam as well as its true followers. With his baseness stunts, he not only exposed himself but also the evils plotted by the British government.

Prevention of Qadianism Fitna

Allah has set such a method of reward and punishment that if He let loose someone, even then He exposes their end in this world and the hereafter. When Mirza’s lunatic speech had crossed all limits, the Saints and scholars stood up unanimously and began to refute and oppose him nipping the evil of Qadianism in the bud.

Efforts of Pir Mehar Ali Shah

Pir Mehar Ali Shah went to Hijaz for Hajj. The Holy Prophet came in his dream and said: “You have come here, and there Mirza is tearing to pieces my sharia. Upon returning home, Mehar Ali Shah wrote two books Saif-e-Chishtiyai and Shams-ul-Hidayah in refutation of this accursed. When Mirza couldn’t come up with a response, he issued a challenge to contest with him in Lahore. He also announced that they both would write in fluent Arabic a commentary of the chosen verses in that meeting with Divine help. Then the group of scholars will decide whose exegesis is better. Pir Mehar Ali Shah accepted his challenge and reached Lahore with a group of scholars. However, the liar Mirza failed to show up, stating that Pathans of the border had come with Pir Mehar Ali Shah who had conspired to have him assassinated under cover of engaging him in a debate to disprove his claim to Prophethood.

This incident is clear proof of the victory of Pir Mehar Ali Shah. On the path of Truth, believers grant victory to their religion by sacrificing their lives. And here Mirza didn’t show up in terror of the thought of losing his life. Shorish Kashmiri writes that a wrath appeared on Pir Mehar Ali Shah’s face, and he said:

Mirza says that we will write commentary of the verses with pen and paper. Had he come, I would have put my pen on the paper and the pen would have written the commentary itself by the Divine command.

Efforts of Pakistan to prevent Qadiani fitna

With the tireless efforts of the scholars and Saints, the Government of Pakistan played a historic role in preventing this fitna spread by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani add a These efforts are still used as a reference all over the world.

On June 30, 1974, Shah Ahmad Noorani introduced a resolution in the National Assembly to declare Qadianis as a non-Muslim minority. On August 5, 1974, the proceedings of the National Assembly session began, which was attended by the entire cabinet, including the then Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. In world history, this is the only instance of a democratic system of government where instead of deciding on the basis of majority, the heads of both sects of Qadiani religion (Rabwi and Lahori) were also called to present their stand. The Qadiani group was given a full opportunity to defend themselves and express their position.

On September 7, 1974, Attorney General Yahya Bakhtiar briefed the members after 13 days of detailed discussion and cross-questioning in the elected National Assembly of Pakistan. His statement was so logical, comprehensive, and convincing that many liberal and secular legislators were also alarmed at the beliefs and intentions of the Qadianis. Therefore, on September 7, 1974, the Parliament unanimously declared both sects of Qadianis (Rabwi and Lahori) as non-Muslim minorities and permanently registered it in Articles 160 (2) and 260 (3) of the Constitution of Pakistan that Qadiani will remain kafir (infidels) for as long as Pakistan remains. The then Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto signed the parliamentary proceedings and sealed that as long as Pakistan remains, Qadianis will remain infidels in it. He said the historical words, “I may hardly have done any good deeds in my life, but through this one signature, Allah will forgive me.”

Qadianism is a big persecution in the subcontinent and the biggest argument for its falsity is that it is backed up by Jews and Christians. It is an out-turn of the British so that they could weaken the faith of the Muslims and cause unrest between them. Many Islamic countries have declared Qadianis as infidels in their constitutions to prevent the persecution of Qadianism.

Even to date, these accursed people continue to create new temptations to hollow out the roots of Pakistan. In fact, it would be fair to say that their conspiracies have played major role in the worst economic and political conditions of Pakistan today. Through their influence in politics, they are determined to weaken the roots of Pakistan and in particular they are after its nuclear program. May Allah keep Pakistan safe and give sense to its politicians to protect Pakistan from their evil conspiracies.

Prevention from Qadiani Fitna

The best solution to protect ourselves from this fitna is to find and follow a Saint who will guide us on the righteous path and will not let us go astray with the help of Allah. In the present era such true man of Allah is the Sarwari Qadri perfect spiritual guide Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman. He is on the footsteps of the Holy Prophet and has achieved the level of Fana fillah Baqa Billah Fakir by intensely loving Allah and His Prophet and following their teachings and commands all his life. Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen grants the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat on the very first day. His only mission and only aim in this life is to call people towards Allah and for that he has perpetually devoted his days and nights. He has written twenty-four books which are the ocean of guidance and enlightenment for anyone seeking or walking the path of Truth.

Allah says in the Holy Quran:

And those who strive hard for Our cause, We certainly guide them to Our ways. (29: 69)

This sacred verse is the assurance of Allah and a strength for those who are sincerely seeking Him. We ask you to come and gain Ism-e-Allah from our spiritual guide Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen keeping a firm faith in this verse and Insha’Allah Allah will grant you your desire of gaining His gnosis and union.
