Who was I before my disability? Was I happier? When I look at photos of myself, am I only my disability? When I look in the mirror, who do I see?
There is a lot of loss with the formation or the realization of disability. Loss of opportunity, resources, friendships, sense of self. All of this loss is tactical, of course, by the institutions that constantly try to shove disabled people out of their spaces, and intentional by society to isolate disabled people.
The lack of support, solidarity, allyship, results in the loss of self. When we are seen only for our disability, that is all we see in ourselves. All we see is that loss.
However, disability isn't all loss. It's painful and, more often than not, it sucks. But we cannot allow ourselves to define our disability as solely loss. There is more than that.
It's just a matter of finding it.

The way I like to imagine Karlach throwing it back on the dance floor over Gortash's dead body to "Fire Burning" once she's sorted all her Big Feelings existential crisis out.

Bit telling that for years and years evangelical religious extremists have been allowed on university campuses with their bullhorns and horrific imagery where they harass students into physical altercations and when students complain to the university’s administration they just shrug their shoulders citing freedom of speech but when those same tuition-paying students start protesting against war and genocide they call SWAT

On related note, a few years ago, the Entomological Society of America officially discontinued the use of "gypsy moth" and "gyspy ant" as common names for Lymantria dispar and Aphaenogaster araneoides. L. Dispar is now known as the "spongy moth," so named for the appearance of their eggs, but I don't think a new common name has caught on for the ant species yet.
These changes we brought about, in large part, by the advocacy of Romani people in academia. You might not think that bug names are a very serious issue, but I believe that language matters. These species became known as "gypsies" because their attributes were likened to certain stereotypes and negative perceptions of actual Roma, so the continued use of those names reaffirmed those negative associations in the public consciousness. Slurs and pejoratives can never be truly decontexualized.
In my mind, one of the biggest obstacles that Romani people face when we are trying to advocate for ourselves is a lack of recognition as a marginalized group that deserves the necessary consideration. Even for seemingly trivial matters, like bugs or comic book characters, the way that people talk about us-- and talk down to us, when we get involved-- is telling. So, I always think that changes like this are a win, because it means that people are willing to learn and grant us the dignity we deserve. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to effect change in your own field, even arts and science.

im noticing that for a lot of americans “free palestine” has been an ideological motto and symbol rather than them actually believing in their heart that freedom is attainable and necessary

"hey, don't call me a tankie! I'm just a marxist-leninist who supports Russian autocrats using military force to invade countries trying to escape their grasp, which has nothing to do with the original meaning of ‘marxist-leninist who supports Russian autocrats using military force to invade countries trying to escape their grasp’!"

It's so funny how the meaning of "tankie" has kept expanding to encompass those who previously used it. Like at first it was very specifically used by British Trots to refer to communists that supported the Soviet Suppression of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising (because you know, they supported sending in the Tanks). But later on various "Libertarian" Leftists used it as a general pejorative for any perceived "Authoritarians", which usually includes Trots. Now you see fucking Liberals using it to mean any "Leftist" they see as too violent or radical; like it wasn't that long ago I saw someone referring to an Anarchist as "Tankie". Like how long until it enters the political mainstream? I can't wait to hear Joe Biden supporters call anyone who opposes his genocide a Tankie

As someone who is genderfae (microlabel under genderfluid), I have a lot of different experiences with gender.
I just wish someone told me sooner that it won't go like "today I'm a girl" "today I'm an enby" but more like ,,, "today I am a swamp witch" "today I am a feminine victorian vampire boy" "today I am a forest goblin collecting people's stares about my gender expression like shiny rocks on the ground" "today I'm an androgynous pirate lady"
Like,,, sure, are those real genders? I don't fucking now. If a cisgender person asked me what I identify as that day, would I answer like that? No, definitely not.
But to my genderqueer, trans and genderfluid friends; do you get me? I can't be alone with this, right?
