Gil saw the pain in Bruce’s eye. He clenched his own jaw, watching Holley nod, her fingers type faster and faster. But he turned back to Bruce to check in.
Gil’s story wasn’t the same, but he understood. He understood what it was like to look back on waters that you once knew and loved and feel a knife twist in your gut.
(“Maybe one day, I’ll bring you to my hometown,” Leo once whispered late at night. “It’s the same sea, I know. But you could look at it and maybe think of something different. Make a new memory.”)
Gil wondered if he should say something, but before he could drop his voice and ask Bruce if he was alright, Shiftwell clapped her hands together.
“Okay — I don’t know if this is remotely close at all, but I put together a rough migration chart. It could be totally wrong. But just based on the information you did tell me and using Samoa as a data point — “ She turned her laptop screen around to show Bruce. It was a map of the world, with one turquoise line charting through the oceans, particularly in the Pacific. The line had little dots on it, each one with a different month — or rather, a time of month, like “late December” — on it.
“We can use this to predict where they’ll be! I mean, I hope. I don’t know how accurate it is.”

Gil thought too much about the mechanics of getting a drink with someone — did you wait for them to order? Was it rude to order before? Did you line up together? What did it mean if you did? Should one person just wait at the table? Should you both go up and leave the table vulnerable? Should he offer to forgo his drink and sit with her?
Luckily, Guilia made the decision for him, which he was incredibly thankful for. This came out in a small nod, and a smile that looked more like a less pained grimace.
“I’m good. He’s good too,” Gil said, after he’d given his order to the barista. “He tried to get me to go to a … sip and paint class at [name redacted]. But we couldn’t find it. Have you heard of that place yet?” He tilted his head. “Some peculiar coffee shop that only shows up when … well, I forget the specifics. Hatter’s is much easier to find.”

“You get on that,” said Leo, with a confident nod.
And Gil let out a laugh. An actual, out-loud laugh.
It was just something about Leo — the way he could just immediately make friends and then make demands of them. And most of the time, they were all too willing to go along.
“We’ll see, won’t we?” said Gil. “We’ll definitely show up for trivia though. If you want to make a team or something,” he added, a little shyly.
Tumblr media
“Yes! I love trivia. I got sports covered,” Leo said confidently.

“Give me a moment,” said Holley, patiently. She glanced at Gil, as if asking permission, though for what, he wasn’t entirely sure. But her fingers flew across the typewriter. “I’m starting by accessing the file the RAS has on the researchers,” she explained. “And then looking over the information you gave me to see if I can narrow down the location where they…”
Her voice trailed off. Gil cleared his throat.
“We’ll use that as a starting point, and then with the information you gave us, provide a rough path of your pod’s migration. And hopefully, then we’ll be able to plot where they might be, and from there, we could try to make contact.”
That was the plan, at least. If everything went right, Bruce’s notes were thorough enough and Holley was able to fill in the information, that was the plan.
But there was a lot of information to fill in. A lot of memories to wade through.

Gil hadn’t actually expected Leo’s friend to reach out to him.
Well, maybe that wasn’t exactly right. He’d had a hunch, considering how animatedly Leo had talked about her. But he also hadn’t expected himself to go through with it. Gil reminded himself that he was doing this for the greater benefit of mer-kind, because he knew what it was like to be in a strange town without knowing who to trust.
And, well, Leo had just been so excited about the prospect of Gil befriending one of his childhood friends, that Gil couldn’t say no.
“Nice to see you as well,” said Gil, offering a small smile that he hoped didn’t look too much like a grimace. “Have you gotten anything to drink yet?”

“Oh, I like to change it up,” said Leo. “I’ve gone a few times now. Can’t get enough of it. Gil just does Riff Raff usually. Without the bad wig. So just a spooky butler with some fingerless gloves. Somehow he makes it look good.”
He winked here and Gil cleared his throat a little, suddenly flustered.
“I didn’t want to buy a bald cap just for that,” he shot back. “I only went the one time.”

“We should bring it here!” Leo nudged Gil. “Wait — do they show it at the Comic Barn at all?”

Gil understood.
As an RAS agent, he didn’t have the luxury to plant roots, but he understood. Even if he didn’t have a place… well, he had people.
(Five years ago, Gil would’ve never acknowledged that. Things changed. He wasn’t in the space to reflect on that right now, but he did consider the thought briefly and let it pass).
“I get it,” he said. “Starting over isn’t fun. And you’ve made a good life for yourself here.” Bruce had a steady job and friends who cared about him. In a way, it was puzzling that Bruce would want to leave all of that for a more dangerous life in the ocean.
But that, Gil also understood.
It was a choice he’d never have the privilege of making.
“I’ll keep that in mind. But for now… if you could give me all the information you know. You don’t have to do it right away, but the more you remember, the better.”

The RAS had more on its plate than usual, thanks to the fairy crown ordeal.
But Gil had a hunch that Holley wouldn’t mind taking this on. Especially since there was only so much they could do now with the crown. Holley would want another project to dig into, another way to help.
And Gil hoped this would have a happy ending. That they would find Bruce’s pod. That Bruce could return to the sea. That Bruce would be safe.
That last one would always be a question, wouldn’t it? Even if they found his pod, there was no guarantee.
“If we cannot find them,” Gil began slowly. “Would you want us to look into other options? Other pods that may be open to taking you in?”

“That’s a good place to start,” Gil said. He knew it was tough for Bruce to even suggest that, to relive some of the worst moments of his life. He thought, briefly, of the day he had found out he lost his pod.
But Bruce’s pod was still out there. Their tragedies might overlap, but the key difference was that there was hope for Bruce.
And maybe years ago, this would’ve made Gil turn inward and find someone else to take this on. But now… well, he owed it to Bruce. He owed it to Gabriella. The rest of the merfolk in Swynlake.
“Would you mind if we got Shiftwell to look into this? I’d still be the primary agent leading it, but she’s much better when it comes to finding information like this. Especially with …” The people who took you, Gil wanted to say. “Organizations like that one.”

Leo snorted, but Gil cut him off.
This wasn’t typical, really, and even Gil knew that. But Leo let him talk, regarding him with soft eyes.
“I didn’t,” Gil admitted. “But one of the friends we were with tried to get us all to do it. Leo flat out refused. But then he got really annoyed once we showed up and everyone was dressed up and felt like he was missing out.”
Tumblr media
“Guntur didn’t really sell the fact that everyone dresses up for this! We looked weirder not dressed up.”
“I mean at that point, you still thought it would be scary,” Gil pointed out.
Leo didn’t really have a good response to that. He just sort of huffed, though that faux stoic demeanor broke immediately as he laughed.
Tumblr media
“For the record, I did dress up the next time! I get it now! I love it now! But Gil didn’t come to that one.”

Leo nudged him in the shoulder, smiling so wide that Gil almost wanted to smack him across the face.
He didn’t do that, of course. He didn’t actually want to smack Leo in the face either. He liked Leo’s smile.
It was surreal to him, meeting this woman who had known a younger Leo. Gil had heard stories from Leo about his childhood, but there was a difference between hearing those stories from someone you only knew because of specific circumstances and then seeing proof that this someone had a past and a whole other life before you knew them.
(There wouldn’t be an old childhood friend of Gil’s to randomly wander into Swynlake and wave from across the park; Gil’s past was lost to the sea).
Leo smiled so wide that Gil smiled too.
“Alright, what about 2 in the afternoon? But if you get hired, don’t leave your job for me.” His attempt at a joke. “We can always reschedule.”

Would it be possible for me to go home?
It took Gil a moment to fully process what Bruce was asking.
Go home. Back to the ocean. Return to the sea.
That was the dream, wasn’t it? A dream that Gil would never see, because his home was gone, his pod massacred. There was no home for him to return to.
But that didn’t mean it could not come true for others. For Gabriella. For Bruce.
“I do not think it’s too late,” said Gil, slowly. “I think it would be difficult to track your pod down. More difficult than Gabriella’s.” Deep sea mermaids were more reclusive and nomadic than their shallow water counterparts. “But if that’s what you want, and if you think you are ready… we can absolutely try.”
