Bad Thing, The Midwich Cuckoos, 1.01
Alice Troughton (D), David Farr (S), 02/06/22

A (Mer)man-to-(Mer)man Talk | Brilley
Bruce had been warned that the town-wide collective dreams could be unsettling to some people, especially the August ones, but he hadn’t realized just how unsettling. Maybe he had underestimated Swynlake. Growing up in the deep ocean and then going through the ordeal of the past year, Bruce didn’t think a lot fazed him anymore, but the dream hadn’t just been dark and violent, it was also personal.
Because Bruce had done terrible, violent things in the dream. But he had also done terrible, violent things in real life, too. And seeing all of that play out in his subconscious, and knowing everyone in town had seen him do those things made Bruce terrified that his cover would be blown, that his identity would be discovered, that he would be sent to another lab or to prison or maybe just dumped back in the ocean. There was a reason he kept his merperson identity a secret, especially the specific type of merman he was.
So he thought, out of the agents, Gil would be the one most likely to have good advice. And would understand why Bruce was so worried, even if Bruce still didn’t want to tell him about his part in the lake attacks this summer. He stopped by the agent’s apartment on the way home from work and was surprised to see... not Gil at the door.
“Oh... hello Holley,” Bruce said awkwardly. “I was looking for Gil-- is it a bad time?”

SATURDAY HAMILTON GALLERY PUBLIC EVENTS
On Saturday morning I gave a guest curator’s floortalk on my exhibition Forever Spring: The Art of Flowers at Hamilton Gallery. Pictured here with me is the charming Agostina Hawkins, who handles Education and Public Enhancement at the gallery, in an appropriate flowery dress. Thank you Agostina for the flower bedecked cakes and cookies you commissioned for the event. We are in the other image with Joshua White, the relatively new Artistic Director of Hamilton Gallery, who has brought innovative, fresh ideas and new insights to an important Australian art and decorative arts collection.  I would particularly like to thank him for the opportunity to make this exhibition. He gave me complete freedom to create my curatorial concept, choice of works, accompanying text and vision for the exhibition - and to design every aspect of its physical appearance.
I would like to acknowledge the marvellous and very talented Ian Brilley, Collection Co-ordinator, Madi Whyte for her photography, painting and computer design skills and Claudia Ross for her invaluable assistance with the labels and installing the exhibition with Ian and myself. I would like to thank Simon Sharrock for the painting of the rooms - a considerable task. The team work so well together and it has been a pleasure to be involved with them. I would also like to thank Stacey Barnes for her creative thinking and efficiency in the promotion of the exhibition.
Angus Christie also gave wonderful talks on the HG60 exhibition upstairs. His engaging personality, gentlemanly manner and enthusiasm for art makes him the perfect choice for public events and these talents are shared with visitors to the gallery when he is on the reception desk.

Leominster’s first Bus and Coach Services.
FIRST BUS & COACH SERVICES
Source: ‘FACILITY OF LOCOMOTION’ SINCLAIR & FENN 1991 An interesting read for anyone wanting to know more about the rise and decline of the railways.
Why has early coach travel not surrounded by the nostalgia of the railways? For many families like mine we used the ‘bus’ far more frequently than trains. By the 1950s and 1960s small towns like Leominster had very few railways services and it was expensive. Whether it was day trips or holidays the ‘bus’ was the transport of choice. It was probably the power and presence of a steam locomotive which creates the nostalgia. All the power of a coach is under a bonnet. A steam locomotive is almost alive with it sounds of puffing, hissing and whistling.
For the summer months of 1929 the 'Original Coach Service' ran between the Black Swan at Leominster which it left on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9.45 am, for Aberystwyth.
It called en route at the Talbot, Kington, at 10.30 am, and could offer its passengers 'accommodation for suitcases.' In August 1933 Yeomans Motors offered a day return to the Shrewsbury Floral Fete, coaches, as they were called, leaving the Market Hall, Kington, at 9 am.
The fare was 5/6d and passengers were also picked up at Wootton, Almeley, Lyonshall, and Brilley. That same year Burnham's Grey Luxury Coaches Express Service achieved what the Kington railways had long and unsuccessfully tried to offer, a through service to Aberystwyth, described by the company as 'the Biarritz of Wales', departing for Cardigan Bay from Leominster at 9.25 am and from Kington forty-five minutes later.
The summer of 1934 saw the Black and White Bus Company advertising in the Kington Times its 'improved Motor Coach services from Leominster to Kington, Hereford to Kington and both on to Aberystwyth, and to Oxford and Cheltenham in the other direction.
By October 1937 Primrose Motors of Leominster had a well-established and equally well-advertised daily service, including Sundays, between Leominster and Kington, which easily outstripped what was on offer from the GWR. The following year saw Yeomans offering a special day trip to Birmingham 'in luxury coaches equipped with heaters', leaving Kington at 9.10 am for 6/- return. The Second World War gave the railways something of a respite but competition was  renewed afterwards and in 1951, the year of the Festival of Britain, with a languishing railway service, Presteign Urban District Council supported Yeoman's application to the Traffic Commissioners for a bus service between Presteign and Kington.

HAMILTON GALLERY’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION ON NOW
This splendid exhibition highlights the treasures of Hamilton Gallery. It has been curated by a team of leading Australian art and decorative arts scholars: Associate Professor Alison Inglis, Dr Vivien Gaston, Dr Lisa Beaven, Jane Clark, Dr Matthew Martin, Professor Peter McNeil and Dr Alex Burchmore. An extensive exhibition catalogue by the scholars accompanies the exhibition and this includes a wonderful essay by Dr David Hansen on Australian regional galleries. Ian Brilley, the Collection Co-ordinator and Artistic Director Joshua White have done a magnificent job displaying so many disparate works in the upstairs galleries. This exhibition is not to be missed.
