Nighttime Thoughts

It's 2:40am.

I'm tired but can't sleep. My good leg is hurting and I can tell it's the nerve pain. Stabbing pain with some tingling. I know my pain is less overall than it used to be but in moments like this it's hard to remember that.

2:42.

The muscles keep spasming. It's painful and really annoying in a monotonous way. I don't know if I'm awake because of the pain or the insomnia.

2:43.

It's a weird feeling to be both tired and not, in much the same way that I'm too hot and too cold. I want the comfort of my duvet up to my chin but it's too warm. It's April, why am I too warm? I'm coming down with something - with my compromised immune system that can mean anything from a few weeks to a few months of feeling like crap. And probably antibiotics again. I'm not sure how many I've had this year already.

I'm tired.

It's 11:03 am.

I didn't sleep.

Selective Mutism: an anxiety disorder. The inability to talk is caused by social anxiety due to the people and/or situation around the selectively mute individual. Often starts in childhood.

Speech Loss: a term for being unable to speak for a certain period of time, usually due to autism-related reasons (e.g. being overwhelmed or burnt out). Can overlap with Selective Mutism, the disorder, but it is not the same thing. (For one, SL is a trait; SM is a whole disorder.)

Nonverbal/Nonspeaking: a term for people who are always or almost always unable to talk. If you're unable to talk for an hour/day/week, you're not "going nonverbal"; you're "losing speech". If you've never been able to talk more than a few utterances, that's nonverbal.

Semiverbal/Semispeaking: a term for people who struggle greatly to speak to communicate. This might include taking awhile to form sentences, speaking with very few words, relying on echolalia, using gestures to communicate, and not always making sense to others.

Hyperverbal: people who speak more than what's typical, though we can still experience speech loss. This can include things like having a large vocabulary, using more words than necessary/usual to say something, talking to ourselves, talking for the sake of talking, using a lot of non-communicative echolalia, not realizing we're talking, or rambling often.

A Note: over time, your place on the verbalizing spectrum (nonverbal, semiverbal, average, hyperverbal) CAN change, but that's not, like, "oh i was hyperverbal this week and nonverbal last week"; it's about overarching patterns. Additionally, Selective Mutism does not inherently put someone at a certain spot on the verbalizing spectrum.

Even in headcanon everyone seems to agree that all Leo's are Space series nerds, like if you put them in a room together, and got them started on their favorite shows they would talk for hours. (Probably, that's the feeling I get from this anyway.)

But what if they somehow all liked the same show, but different versions. Like say they like Doctor Who, but each prefers a different Doctor.

Some would probably literally start a fight, while others will just make their point, and listen to the others opinions.

But it would probably end with them all just marathon watching everything, until someone that isn't a Leo wants to watch something else. Then the battle for the remote happens, while someone else sneaks in and changes what's playing.

Maybe as a bonus, the Don's, Donnys, Donnie's join the Leo's in the original marathon, and they fight the Raphs who want to watch wrestling, and the Mikeys sneak in to watch whatever they decide to watch.

Mikeys can be so varied that I can't quite pin down a common show they would all like except maybe a comic adaptation.

Ones hands can tell the story of how they’ve lived… and how far they have come.

I’m a sucker for Good Dad Splinter ever since I watched TMNT ‘03. That rat was gifted sapience and his immediate instinct was kindness. I love that for him.

Rise Splinter lived a rollercoaster of a life, but as a Hollywood star he remembered the names of all his stunt guys and coworkers, and as a prisoner he cared for the rat that shared his cell. His sons are very close and physically affectionate, I think that says something about how he cares? That’s just how I like to headcanon him :)

It’s interesting to explore the idea that a seemingly monstrous transformation is what pushed him to be a kinder human

Okay information about the characters childhoods that I’ve been able to find out or figure out:

Casey: I have been in training since I was seven!

In the episode ‘How to Make Enemies and Bend People to Your Will’ Cassandra says she has been in training with the Foot since she was seven

Kendra: April! That’s your name right?

April: You’ve known me since kindergarten Kendra

In the episode ‘The Purple Jacket’ April says she & Kendra have known each other since kindergarten

According to the Rise book Ninja Power, April has known the Turtles for five years by the time the series starts meaning April met the turtles when she was 11, & Raph would have been 10, Donnie & Leo would have been 9 & Mikey would have been 8.

Leo: I say we let him go Raph, you went out on your own when you were his age

According to Leo in the episode ‘Hot Soup: The Game’, Raph has been going out to the surface by himself since he was at least 13

The Lair Games that happened in 2019 is said to be the sixth one which means they started in 2014 (meaning Raph was 11, Donnie & Leo were 10 & Mikey was 9)

In the episode ‘Lair Games’ Donnie is said to have been drawing his eyebrows on for nine years meaning he started when he was six
