People talk about how Sam sets up elaborate traps for Brennan on Game Changer, but I just rewatched the first episode, and Brennan was already suspicious from question 1 (where he was just asked to say his name), so possibly Brennan will treat anything as an elaborate trap.

One time I was explaining to my dad how unfair it is that every big city has at least a couple gay bars but there are only like 20ish lesbian bars left in the country and he responded with "That's cause gay men have a good party culture. Lesbians don't have time to party, they're too busy debating the sociological implications of things and studying for postgrad degrees" and as much as I wanted to tell him he was out of line for that, as a lesbian who spends all her free time on Tumblr debating sociological implications and messaging other lesbians in discord servers where everyone has a PhD or masters for some reason I felt like I might not be the best person to make that argument

marine biology is so scary because it’s such a small field. i was giving a talk on cetaceans and afterward a woman approached me with her husband and she said, “you did very well. [husband’s name] actually pioneered the research and published the first paper on that. We were very impressed by you.”

Which is such a scientific interpretation/public education win I will cherish forever but also for the rest of my life any time I give a talk I will be haunted by the knowledge that the world’s leading expert who literally discovered/invented the topic might be in the room,

which is like, the opposite of what you’re supposed to do for stage fright. In fact I never used to experience stage fright but now I will.

#tbf i think this is just academia when you're in a sufficiently niche subject #my advisor made me change a term in my dissertation from the one that is more common in modern literature to the one she used in her own wo #because she had helped invent the standard i was talking about

coffee should be a thirst quencher on par with water instead of a dehydrating diuretic. you should be allowed to replace all water consumption with coffee and be fine

#i'm sure consuming that much caffeine would be fine for me #tbh i do some days drink black tea throughout the day instead of water and that's probably not perfect as far as hydration goes but

fun fact: Boston Museum of Science calls their evening lecture series “SubSpace”, which would be a totally innocuous math term except for the fact that, to make sure you know these lectures are higher-level and not aimed at their usual audience (kids), they chose to subtitle it “SubSpace: Adult Experiences”
