SHIP OF MONSTERS (”La Neve de los monstruous” 1960) -Dir
Rogelio A. González.
a New Instant-Favorite from Mexico. I even like the dimwitted (but actually smart) singing vaquiero (Eulalio Gonzalez) who has a great deep voice (like Patrick Swayze singing “One Ton of Fan Mail” in that 1990 South American “Super Feud” sketch with Dana Carvey on SNL back in 1990), and a cadre of crazy monsters, a space ship, two sexy pin-up mujeres (Ana Bertha Lepe and Lorena Velázquez, both ex-Miss Mexico beauty queens) with ray guns and tight-fitting uniforms, on the planet to find male specimens for their all-female planet of Venus. And a cool robot. One of the monsters is just like a sabre tooth tiger skeleton with a weird deep voice.
For fans of 1930 Universal serials, classic horror, and, yes, even Abbott and Costello Go to Mars, The Star Creatures, Missile to the Moon, and even Three Stooges in Orbit, though better than them all. (way better than Queen of Outer Space, obviously), and also in the same fun zone as Mexican classics of the 50s-60s like Curse of the Crying Woman, Black Pit of Dr. M, and The Vampire, it’s a hip ride that never gets tawdry, campy, winky, idiotic or--worst of all--sanctimonious about Apple Pie or Christianity.

Appropo bro remembering his legal troubles for bringing enlightenment like a spark to a generation that--even if they did soon wind up burn-outs--blazed so brightly we still have black holes in our retinas from where they once stood, tall and mighty. Now Tim’s head sits frozen next to some Lovecraftian elder god alchemists or other, but at least there’s no more vultures pickling--i mean--picking his liver
Prometheus Bound (first performed in Berkeley, July 31, 1970). An adaption of the Greek tragedy, written, directed and starring Douglas Broyles in the role of Prometheus-Leary.
