Tumblr media
Wow, I was about to create a blog with this exact name, but turns out I already had one and had completely forgotten about it! I'm surprised Tumblr hasn't been completely killed off yet, but I'm going to take the opportunity and use this platform to talk about the game I'm making. It isn't the first video game I'm attempting to make, and probably not the last one either, but it's the first time I have a concrete plan and the drive to actually make all—or at least most—of it myself, by notably overcoming my fears of coding.
The screenshot above is a very early look at what I'm making, it's not actually in the game engine yet, it's just a screenshot of the file I'm using to make the first area's tileset.
I am using Game Maker Studio 2.3 as my game engine, and I'm following Shaun Spalding's top down RPG tutorial, which includes most of what I want in my game's prototype. The screenshot below is how the prototype currently looks, with only my player character imported into it, it's quite a sight!

Today I've been working on the combat animation, and it's been rough. The idea is to have the character pull a branch out of their chest, and the branch has to look flimsy enough to actually look like a branch, but firm enough so that the motion looks convincing. I'm not sure I'm setting myself for success with this design, but I'm learning a lot!

The animation is far from finished, as I have to clean a lot of displaced pixels, especially around the edges, but it's getting there. The branch needs to get properly drawn, of course. The hair needs a lot more movement as well. And I need to make the front view and back view, so there's that. But I'm having fun! and that's the whole point of all of this.
I am currently aiming for a combat prototype first, because once I get that down, the rest will be adding new areas, new monsters and new quests, and that's the type of work that looks most appealing to me. I wouldn't say I'm dreading the prototype, but it for sure is intimidating, and I have a feeling things will go smoother once it's done.
But maybe I'm completely mistaken and things will only get worse... ? I sure hope not!
