Charlastor headcanons cuz why not

I'm currently sick, so while I'm recovering, I thought I'd share some of these. I came up with most of them writing fanfiction (some of these are straight up future plots in my head).

• Early on, after Charlie learnt of Alastor's aversion to touch, she begun to invite him to initiate contact whenever she wants to hold his hand or similar, which he deeply appreciates.

• She still forgets it sometimes whenever she's extremely stressed or excited, but Alastor eventually got used to it.

• Naturally, since Alastor is an excellent cook, he frequently flexes his skills for Charlie, who's delighted every time. He also does it on purpuse to bother Vaggie, the two have a rivalry over who can cook better for Charlie.

• When Charlie explained aromanticism to Alastor, he admitted it might apply to him but he isn't sure. The truth is he isn't sure, but he pretends to be romantic on purpose, half to mess with Charlie, half because he knows it makes her happy.

• Afterwards, Charlie constantly checks on Alastor to ask if he's comfortable whenever they get physical (kissing, snuggling). He's fine most of the time, but finds this habit of hers adorable.

• Every time Charlie shows signs of growing smarter, Alastor is secretely proud because it makes messing with her more challenging. He won't admit it, but he thinks she has great potential.

Angel Dust was my closet key (but not in the way you'd expect)

This one's gonna be a bit of a personal post, so bear with me.

For most of my life, I considered myself a pretty hetero guy. I felt attracted to women, I didn't feel attracted to men and I was mostly fine with that. However, around a couple years ago, when I was participating in Yuri Jam, I came across a little term called "biromantic" and something clicked for me.

In case you don't know, "biromantic" is a term that applies to a person who feels romantic attraction for both men and women. Back then I thought "Oh yeah, I guess I am that!", then I came out on twitter, no one cared about it and I moved on with my life.

At the time, I thought I did for attention and out of guilt for being a cisgendered heterosexual male, and to be fair, I think it's a valid expectation for most people to want *some* attention when you have something to say that's comparable to that. A part of me also felt like it wasn't a useful discovery, because 1: I know of no men who want to date other men in a purely romantic non-sexual way and 2: I've been single by choice for a while anyways.

But all of that changed when I first saw Angel Dust on the Amazon series.

I was like: "Oh my gosh" 😳 That guy has a very hot voice. I thought he was so confident, so assertive, every line he spouted made me melt into a giggling 6 year old. And then I was like: "Oh. I guess those feelings were valid. I'm in love with Angel Dust" 🥺💖

Now I just wanna gush a little because I just think Angel Dust is such a cool character. The way he's portrayed makes you think he's meant to be obnoxious, but to me he's so proud, so bold, so brave for being himself. The way he flirts with Husk with such assertiveness is so attractive to me. There's something so raw and geniune about it.

Another thing that blows my mind is that, even though we know this "confident" persona is meant to be façade and he only puts face as a coping mechanism, the fact that Angel is capable of putting that face is mind blowing to me. He's gone through one of the worst versions of Hell I can imagine, he's been used, humiliated and hurt, both physically and psychologically and yet he's still capable of putting on a smile.

Needless to say, I don't intend to glorify the stuggles of an abuse victim, what Angel goes through is an atrocity and it shouldn't happen to anyone in a fair world. But the fact that that's his reality and he still manages to struggle through the best way he can makes him such a badass to me.

I also feel obligated to mention his redemption arc. I think Angel was always a good person, he just needed to right space to grow. From the start, he seemed very sociable and empathetic, it's just that he was too jaded to care about others. I think taking care of Niffty and standing up to her in episode 6 just came naturally for him, there was no need for a very strict guidance, just some nurture.

He's such a sweetheart! His interactions with Charlie in episode 3 are also so cute. I could write a whole post about his relationship with Husk and I probably will. I think it's really cool that despite being so different, they find a way to meet in the middle and come out as better people from it.

I don't know what it is about him, but I watched Angel on the show and I was like "Oh yeah. I wanna smooch that spider man" 😚

It felt like a big relief, because until now I wasn't ever sure if these feelings were "real", or I was just a hetero who wanted to feel special and not hated in the social circles I usually frequent. That's a whole topic of discussion for another day, I know there's people who will argue that heteros can't be the victim of prejudice and I'm not interested in arguing about that today.

I just wanna say, I love you Angel Dust and thank you for opening my eyes. Now I can indulge in my occasional romantic attraction to men without feeling like a false gay wannabe.

Thank you for bearing with me for a very special post. I was a little sick this week, but I managed to find a moment to write it anyways. I'm still working on the next chapter of my fic, but hopefully I'll find a moment here and there to keep writing discussion posts here.

Why I like Chaggie

Hey! My last casual ship review did pretty well, so here I am with another! Needless to say, but thank you all for the interactions, I appreciate it very much 🥰

Last time I talked about Charlastor, a notorious controversial ship and today I'll talk about a surprisingly controversial ship: Chaggie. Why do people dislike this ship? I'll go a bit into it on the second half of this post, but first I'll talk on the positive I see in this cute couple.

First of all, as a guy in his late twenties who's been on at least one relationship, I will say that I appreciate a relation that's mostly based on comfort and support. Some people might think that's boring or not quite the basis of romance, but I think quite the opposite. Johnathan Decker, a licensed couples therapist on youtube (you might know him from Cinema Therapy) often talks about how safety and mutual understanding are the basis of any lasting relationship.

At the start of the Amazon series, Charlie and Vaggie have been together for 3 years, which is evident in many of their day to day interactions. They're comfortable with each other, they rely on each other and best of all, they still coo every now and then over how adorable the other is.

That is not to say the relationship is without conflict, which in my opinion as a writer it's the lifeblood of any good story. Vaggie is clearly quite codependent of Charlie, which is why a large portion of her self worth is based on being useful to her. However, I think the two of them do a decent job of talking through the problems this brings sometimes, such as episode 3.

I think it's cool that the relationship seems to work despite their rocky moments. Charlie most likely thinks a person like Vaggie is a breath of fresh air in Hell, she's selfless, loyal and dedicated. That's probably the reason why she has so much patience with her, a feeling that I'm certain is mutual. Vaggie is clearly very aware of how silly and idealistic Charlie is, in fact she often tries to nudge her to be careful with her attitude. And even though she may not agree with everything, she still always supports her without appearing judgemental, which I think speaks volumes of her character.

Now, let's talk about the shortcomings in the face of the audience. Some people think there's not enough substance in canon to be sold on the couple, which I think is a valid opinion. Some people argue that Chaggie's relationship is boring and not quite as interesting to watch as Charlastor, which I don't entirely agree with. Some people plain dislike or hate Vaggie because they think she's just a naggy chick who is an awful partner to Charlie in every way, which I *definitely* don't agree with.

My opinion falls in a more moderate standpoint. I think, even in the series, their relationship isn't boring, but it could've been presented better. While I said earlier that I think conflict is good in a story, I think a problem in the series that's probably unintentional is that most of the story beats with Charlie and Vaggie are negative.

In episode 3, they have a fight over their lack of communication. In episode 6, Vaggie puts her own secret status as a fallen angel over Charlie, which harms her later. And in episode 7, Charlie spends most of the episode mad at Vaggie and they make up offscreen, which is something unilaterally most fans believe was a mistake.

To the showrunner's credit, there are some positive major story beats. There's Charlie's trust fall on Vaggie, which was cute. There's their beautiful duet in episode 8. And there's them fighting alongside each other in the final battle.

Unfortunately, the fact their arc is a bit wonky and doesn't have a proper buildup makes it so that the climax (the duet) may feel a bit unearned. I don't want to make this whole post about the series because I could spend all day talking about it, so I'll just say for now that i underdtand why some people aren't sold on the ship.

I will say. Some fans have some very beautiful, gorgeous pictures of this ship. There's this great comic made by squids-and-fruitcake that's been running around about Charlie giving Vaggie a gift for Christmas (here's a youtube link in case you want to watch a dub, I couldn't find the original)

I think it's a great example of why this relationship works: they love each other. They may not completely understand each other's circumstances, but they try every day and are still together because of their mutual effort.

Charlie herself, as Hell's number 1 laughingstock can really use the support and the fact that Vaggie supports her even though she doesn't have all the answers means a lot to her. She brings her stability, peace and affection, all things she lacked until she met her.

Vaggie, on the other hand, who was plunged against her will into a pit of violence and cynicism also needs Charlie's perspective. She loves the fact that she cares about something bigger than herself, that she wants to help damned people like her, which given her circumstances I think it's something she also needs in a fundamental level.

Why I like Charlastor

The other day I noticed there was some negativity in the Charlastor tag, including antis and people feeling the need to defend against antis, so I thought I might as well take a step back and just write candidly about why I like the ship.

I only got into Hazbin in October of last year, but already it has inspired me a lot to write and fantazise about it. Like most people, I started with the classic "they look cute together", but as I kept looking I couldn't help but think there was something else to these two than first met the eye.

For starters, I love Pollyanas! I think they get a bad rep for being naive, but I just appreciate an optimist like Charlie who just wants to make people around her happy because it makes her happy. I also like bad boys 😳 I'm a pretty heteronormative guy, so I haven't had a big chance to explore that part of myself yet, but I do like the danger and excitement someone like Alastor brings to the table.

I will admit when I started writing Charlastor I felt like I was handling dynomite. It's a lil scary to ship a boundless altruist with a manipulative sociopath, but bear with me.

I think each of them has something the other needs. I think Charlie needs someone to challenge her, someone to steer her in the right direction while she's mostly isolated. At the start of the series, practically nobody but Vaggie takes her seriously, and Alastor is no exception. He mocks her, teases her, but she still listens and I think it's because somewhere deep down she understands there's something he's trting to communicate in his annoying, but curious way.

Of course, I also love the fanon Charlie who's down bad for Alastor, and even if that Charlie is a little naive, I think it's also sweet and she can use some indulgence while most people treat her like a child.

On the other hand, when it comes to Alastor, this is a bit of a theory on my part, but I think he's secretely lonely. He has friends, certainly, like Rosie and Mimzy, but they're not good enough friends to live together with him. They don't seem to be able to save him from "pure, absolute boredom". But Charlie, for some reason can, even though she's a stranger at the beginning when Alastor chooses to move into the Hotel.

Alastor is not as much of a cynic as someone who chooses to see things in a perspective that benefits him. He doesn't think redeeming sinner is "hopeless", but "hilarious" instead, which has interesting implications to me. That's why he chooses to hover around Charlie, not because he thinks she's lame, rather because he thinks she's silly. She makes him laugh. Which I think is kind of how Alastor sees "love".

And then you have fanon Alastor who, depending on the writer, is either a horny animal, a wisecrack edgelord or a soft boy who's mean to everyone but Charlie XD I like several of those interpretations, but I kinda prefer mine just out of personal taste. I think the best part about Alastor is that he doesn't *care* what anyone thinks of him and always does what he wants, even at the expense of other people, which I find pretty enviable.

They're kinda both outcasts in their own ways. Charlie by being unable to fit in and Alastor being unwilling to compromise. But they don't judge each other. He supports her in his own weird way and she houses him and is delighted of him in general, which is tasty food for his ego. I do wonder why Alastor is interested in Charlie, both in canon and in a fandom vacuum.

There's some cool potential for drama there, but also growth and healing, in my opinion. Personally, I think Alastor doesn't want to actually *hurt* Charlie, but he may hurt those around her, which will be a moment to start settling compromises if Charlie puts her foot down.

That haz bin my review so far! I'm honestly pretty grateful for Vivziepop for all of the work she's done so far, I know directing, animating and writing two shows over the course of 5 year or so ain't easy. I'm also grateful to the fandom who shares their thoughts and vision, which calms the terrible voices I started hearing in my head since I bought this weird old radio.

What I learnt publishing a Charlastor/Chaggie fanfic

Based on a couple of comments I've been getting, apparently people still don't understand polyamory?

For context, I'm currently writing a Charlastor focused fic with Chaggie on the side. The premise is similar to the canon, Charlie is in a relationship with Vaggie, except they have an open relationship and she develops a crush on Alastor.

The logical implication, which is what I assumed people would think, was that Charlie intends to initiate a relationship with Alastor while staying woth Vaggie, therefore the end goal being keeping both, but a couple readers were confused by it.

One reader didn't understand this premise and thought Chaggie was the focus (somehow) and another asked me if by the end Charlie would end up with Vaggie, Alastor or neither. My first thought was: "Why are those the only three options?". It made very little sense to me.

Not saying I'm mad, of course, just disappointed. I thought since the show is pretty LGBTQ open. Apparently polyamory is a more fringe concept than I anticipated, or even open relationships in general. Which is a shame, because I think polyamory is beautiful and people should be free to love more than one person at a time, maybe not even as a life long commitment, just being honest about intentions and doing what feels right for however long it lasts.

Am I interpeting things right? Is it polyamory people don't understand or is it something else? Let me know what y'all think.

Sweet Radio Demon

Hello everyone! I didn't get a chance to talk about it, but here's my first Charlastor fanfic, which Ive been working on for a few months, now!

The story is essentially about Charlie and Alastor getting to know each other after he first joins the Hotel, except she has a crush and he's *very* interested in exploiting it. More than anything, I was invested in exploring the ups and downs a relationship between the two would have at the beginning. All the pleasurable lovebombing and pandering, but also all the heated conflicts and disagreements.

Charlie is a hopelessly romantic, optimistic, goody two shoes who can't hurt a fly and Alastor is a manipulative, confident, sadistic bastard, but somehow, I can't help but think there is something there and I wanted to explore that.

If you're interested, there's a new chapter uploaded every Friday! I'm currently at chapter 6 out of 12. It's been tough for the last few chapters as I've been getting used to my upload schedule, bit I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

My First Game Jam 2018 Winter Retrospective

Oof. This one’s been a tough jam, so I thought it would be a good idea to sort my thoughts and reminice a little bit. For those who don’t know, this is my fifth time in a jam. I’ve tried making plenty of games before, but none of them turned quite alright.

This year came as quite a surprise, since I got to work with a porgrammer and not one, but two artists! I’ve never come to work with so many people at once on such short notice. My growing expirience as a producer though allowed me to manage the team fairly well while doing my share of work at the same time. This year I decided to make a visual novel.

I reused an idea I had from a previous year, a dating sim where you played as an overly cheerful boy. The joke was that, instead of the typical harem where no girl likes the guy and the guy likes all the girls, all the girls geniuenly like the guy but the guy is completly oblivious. It would have made a good concept for a TV show, but in games things don’t quite often work the same. While I was writing the script, I noticed it was crushing for the player to reject every girl but one. I was very vulnerable at the time too, so the writing came to a hault. This year I rewrote the concept with one of the girls as the protagonist and it made much more sense. The other datable girls from the previous concept turned into rivals, which turned out really well. Rivals in dating sims I feel are underused characters.

Anyways, working with the artists, Michelle and and Ariel was a delight. Not only were they very talented, they were both some of the few people I’ve ever met in a jam who took the whole thing seriously. They were working from day 1 on concept art, had original ideas, worked hard to beat deadlines and took revisions well. Now, it was something very new to me, not only working with people with drive, also working with people who did what I told them at all. Ha, ha, ha. See, in my previous jam experiences I’ve rarely had a partner who took it seriously. I’ve had artists who would send me perhaps, one sketch after week one had passed or even dropped out in the middle of the jam having done hardly any work at all. I actually talking about this with other jammers on he discord, this is a very common risk when you work with strangers. It is incredibly heart-wrecking, but it is still something you have to accept. Going back to this year’s aritsts, they really did a great job. Ariel used this warm colors palette which, while I didn’t come up with at all seemed to belnd really well with the style of the characters. The both of them working on the sprites looked really good, I was a bit skeptic at first from the sketches, I didn’t think they would work together that well, but I was pleasantly surprised. The lineart on Michelle’s side was excellent. I wish we would have had time to work on more poses and expressions, but time constraints got really tight.

Which leads me to my next point: programming. Ugh... The programmer I worked with wasn’t very communicative and I didn’t quite know what to do about it. She did things I didn’t tell her to do, worked really slow on simple things and didn’t check on our own work very often. At the end of week one, she sent us a demo with what she had so far. That demo had 3 scenes at best. My script at the time had 16 yet. My soul dropped to my feet. It was clear we couldn’t finish the game on time telling the whole story I wanted, so instead I started rewriting while I told the programmer to begin editing. The plan from the start was that she would take the blunt end of the work while I wrote the script, and when I was finished she would pass me the code when I was finished. That code. Goodness gracious... I’m not an experienced programmer but that code was horrifying. Instead of using labels for menus like they teach you in the renpy tutorial, she pasted the script directly in every branch like there was no tomorrow. For those who don’t know much about coding, that is as if I made my last year’s thesis in post its and I submitted that on a billboard. Now, I don’t want to be so harsh on this poor programmer. I wasn’t aware of her skill, and when someone doesn’t say anything, you assume they know what they’re doing. This was not the case. If she had warned me earlier that she didn’t have that much experience and could use help earlier, or she couldn’t make the whole game by herself, I would have stepped in earlier. Instead, I had to code the whole game by myself in 3 days. 

Three. Days.

THR33.

So yeah. I freaked out for a couple hours. Didn’t think I would make it. But, when you sit down to work, you get surprisingly calm. I managed to do pretty freaking well for making the game in three days. Opened out Audacity for the first friggin time, figured out how to do what I wanted in about 10 minutes. Figured out on my own how to auto-play text to make a fancy potery intro. All in all, not too bad. Imagine what I could’ve done in more time.

All in all, it was actually pretty good. The artists actually got on my side and tried to reassure me, instead of turning against me like I’m used to. That was cool. In the end, I managed to finish my first game for a game jam which was absolutely wicked. As of now, it’s completly purged from my brain, I’m gonna have to replay it some day to remember it exists, but for now it’s nice having a game to your name somewhere out there. According to the itchi.io analytics, it has around 80 downloads as of now. Pretty cool, if I do say so myself!
