Joko Anwar gives another gem of horror with “Satan’s Slaves”
Based on the homonymous (Pengabdi Setan), 1976, Indonesian cult horror film, “Satan’s Slaves” implements a distinct retro/exploitation/b-movie/slasher sense that is bound to excite all fans of the category.
The film is screening on November 28 as part of Five Flavours Asian Horror Night
The film revolves around a rather peculiar family living in a secluded house near a forest. The family consists of a handicapped grandmother, the mother, a former singer who has been disabled by a strange disease that does not let her move from her bed, her husband, who seems to be as far away from anything religious as possible, and their four children who have completely different ages and do not look alike at all. Among them, Rini has assumed the role of the mother being the eldest, Tony is an adolescent who tries his best to earn money for the family, while Bondi and Ian are still children, with the latter being a deaf-mute.
The family faces major financial issues, since the rights to the songs of the mother do not pay any more, and the father had to put a mortgage on the house. Furthermore, everyone seems to be afraid of the mother’s illness and something strange seems to be lurking in the house. Furthermore, e the death of the matriarch initiates a series of events that deteriorate the family’s situation even more, and not only for natural causes, as a number of hidden secrets are revealed, and death and the supernatural seem to be behind every corner.
Joko Anwar directs a film where every clichĂ© of the genre seems to be included. The unnaturally sick mother, the messages on the records if played backwards, the well, the cult, the haunted house, the forest, the eccentric man who knows much but is reluctant to reveal, the extreme facial expressions, the dangerous secrets, the priest, Satan and his children, and almost every “trick” in the book are present and depicted in retro, but rather impressive fashion. This sense seems to derive from every frame of the film, including the on-screen appearance of the title.
This trait extends to the technical department, where the horror derives not from SFX, but from the abruptly extreme sound of Khikmawan Santosa, which includes the screeching of doors, windows and wooden steps on the ladder, the sudden cuts from “normal” to horrific moments implemented by Arifin Cu’unk’s editing, and the equally abrupt zoom-ins of Ical Tanjung’s cinematography. Through Anwar’s direction though, all these elements come together in rather entertaining fashion, as he proves that a film does not need expensive effects to be scary.
Despite the general aesthetics of the movie, Anwar managed to include a number of humorous scenes, with his presence as the owner of the record company and of Fachry Albar’s (the protagonist of “Forbidden Door”) in the finale working in this direction. Particularly the latter provides a truly hilarious scene, as the ending has nothing to do with the rest of the film or its style.
Tara Basro, who has become somewhat of a muse for Anwar, appearing in all of his latest works, is again great as Rini, a woman who tries to protect her family against something that is much above her capabilities. Bront Palarae plays the role of the patriarch convincingly, while the same applies to Endy Arfan as the slick Tony. Ayu Lakshmi, who is actually a recording artist (in a casting choice evident of Anwar’s humor) is quite scary as the mother, particularly through her extreme facial expressions, while M. Adhiyat gives an adorable performance as Ian, with his presence being a constant source of smiling.
Joko Anwar managed to incorporate a number of different elements in “Satan’s Slaves” and, in the process, to present one of the best horror movies we have seen this year, through his unique style.

Gong Li set to star in Martin Campbell’s Thriller ‘Ana’
Great news for Gong Li fans! It’s just been announced that the Singaporean-Chinese star actress, known for such films as Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) and Curse of the Golden Flower (2006), and most recently the hit fantasy The Monkey King 2, will lead the cast of the action thriller Ana, to be directed by the Kiwi filmmaker Martin Campbell.
The production on this new film, set in Europe and similar in tone to Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita, will launch in March/April 2018. According to the brief information available, it features a hacker and her partners in crime, who accidentally steal millions from a crime boss and then are forced into hiding to train for their eventual confrontation.
Martin Campbell is best known for his Bond films, GoldenEye (1995) and Casino Royale (2006), as well as other popular outings like The Mask of Zorro (1998), Edge of Darkness (2010) and Green Lantern (2011). His latest film The Foreigner is an action thriller, which sees Jackie Chan in an unusual role, and has just come out in the US.
Ana will be co-produced by Arthur Sarkissian (the Rush Hour movies) and Bruno Wu (Grace of Monaco, The Immigrant), and is written by Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back). IMDb reports that the story has been adapted from a novel written by Tony Kenrick, one of whose books was made into the 1986 movie Shanghai Surprise earlier, starring Sean Penn and Madonna.
We are eager to see Gong Li in a thrilling action caper, with a modern setting. Will keep you updated as new information comes out!

Watch: Eng-subbed Trailer for Yuen Woo-ping’s ‘The Thousand Faces of Dunjia’
On the heels of the news that the legendary martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping is putting finishing touches on a Mandarin-language fantasy-wuxia film called The Thousand Faces of Dunjia, comes the first English-subbed trailer for the film. And it looks like the Chinese master has an exciting combination of action, fantasy and comedy on his hands here.
The film, directed by Yuen (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny) and written by Tsui Hark (Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon), is inspired by Yuen’s 1982 well-loved action comedy The Miracle Fighters, and sees a bunch of intrepid warriors with special abilities come together to save the planet from evil aliens. Both Yuen and Tsui have regaled fans for years, pushing boundaries within the action genre, and the trailer has whetted our appetite to see what these two greats have cobbled together for us with this new film.
The Thousand Faces of Dunjia stars the Hong Kong actor and singer Aarif Lee, last seen in Jackie Chan’s blockbuster Kung Fu Yoga, and the Chinese actress Ni Ni, fresh from the success of her fantasy-action-adventure film Wu Kong, in lead roles. Also joining the cast are Zhou Dongyu, Da Peng, Wu Bai, Ada Liu, Tiger Xu, Yang Yiwei, Mo Tse, Zhang Yiqian, and the basketball star Sun Mingming, whom many readers would know as the tallest basketball player in the world.
The film is produced by Le Vision Pictures, Acme Image, Beijing Jinhui Yinghua and Star Century Picture, and is scheduled for release on the 15th of December, 2017, in China.

Ghost of Chibusa Enoki (The Mother Tree) 1958
Directed by: GorĂŽ Kadono Cast: Asao Matsumoto, Katsuko Wakasugi, Hiroshi Hayashi
Ghost of Chibusa Enoki 1958 (The Mother Tree)is a Japanese Horror movie about a painter (Shigenobu), who is murdered by his student (Hanimei) so that he could sleep with his wife. Things go badly wrong for Shigenobu and his family, when Shigenobu heads off to paint a dragon mural, Hanimei takes advantage of the situation and threatens his wife, sleep with him or he will kill the baby.
But on his return Shigenobu was attacked and left for dead by Hanimei, so that he could take his wife all for himself.
Plot: Painter is leaving his village and family for awhile, to paint dragons in a rich man’s house. A ruthless samurai falls in love with his wife and rapes her. The Samurai then attacks and kills all of the painter’s servants and drowns them in the lake. Ghosts of painters and servants return to the world of the living, to take revenge on samurai and help newborn baby of painter to escape the death. Painter’s ghost after revenge finished his dragons painting complete and disappeared.
Ghost of Chibusa Enoki is only 48 minutes in length, yes it may take 10 minutes to get going, but what follows is a great story of tortured souls coming back to haunt and take revenge on Hanimei, for all the evil and murder he had commited. Based on the story by EnchĂŽ San’yĂ»tei (Kaidan chibusa-no-enoki), Ghost of Chibusa Enoki brings suspense and revenge to the screen, the final part of the movie had me hooked whilst Hanimei was having to defend himself against angry spirits of those he had murdered.
Here’s what japanesesamuraidvd.com had to say about “Ghost of Chibusa Enoki“. “An extremely atmospheric piece of horror cinema that somehow manages to combine its artificial sets, basic special effects, theatrical acting and stagey direction to a great mood piece that’s definitely more than just the sum of its elemens“.
If you like old school Japanese Samurai Horror movies, then this i for you. Only 48 minutes long, but i very much enjoyed it.
