Brabec forced to quit Dakar 2018! Stranded at km 52 km on the special for the last four hours, Ricky Brabec has eventually decided to give up. The official HRC rider has not been able to repair his Honda, which had caught fire.
Attention: this is a older image and shows the burning motorcycle of Honda rider Paulo Goncalves of Portugal, during the 2014 Dakar Rally, between the cities of Chilecito and Tucuman in San Miguel. Honda and fire, weird concidence between them and Argentina.....

Joan Barreda has retired from the 2018 Dakar whilst still holding second position. After having suffered several falls in some of the earlier stages of the rally and punishing his body severely, the exhausted Spaniard made the decision to completely withdraw. Joan had started the rally with a nagging injury to his left wrist, before falling heavily in the seventh stage, La Paz – Uyuni, where he sustained a damaged left knee.
Despite the pain, Barreda soldiered on the following day to hold on to his top five place. Yesterday, on the route of the tenth stage from Salta – Belén stage, Barreda suffered concussion in the head.

The rider, still determined to defend his overall second place in the general standings, was forced to call an end to his seventh campaign, which is living up to its name as the ‘World’s Toughest Rally’. Barreda goes home with three stage victories this time and a total of twenty-two in all his Dakar participations.

For the team yesterday has been a good little break, of course, but they are still preparing the following stages as we have done so far: day by day, meticulously while trying to avoid any mistakes.

Kamaz Dakar 2018
The fan favourites of Dakar are the trucks. Mike Chen gets up close and personal with the beasts of Dakar, the Kamaz trucks. Take a look at just how powerful these enormous trucks are to be able to make it through the stages of Dakar.
(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = 'https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.11'; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));
Kamaz Truck Tour
13-liter engine. Nearly 1000hp. This is the truck of Kamaz.
Posted by Red Bull Motorsports on Sunday, January 14, 2018
While the trucks are more advanced than some of the competition, that does not account for all of Kamaz's success.
The combination of experience and desire from the team's drivers help push the Kamaz trucks to the front of the pack.

What is so astounding is that they are able to push the trucks so hard day after day for thousands of miles without catastrophic failure.

Weather conditions in the area in the last few days are preventing assistance crews from refurbishing race vehicles for stage 9 after the demanding marathon stage.
The field of the Dakar will therefore head to the Salta bivouac by road. The rally will resume with stage 10 from Salta to Belén at the 16th of January 2018

Due to poor weather conditions organizer ASO canceled Monday's Tupiza - Salta stage. This stage was to feature a 242 km timed special and to mark the end of the event's Bolivian leg. Recent heavy rains in the area created doubts over the stage's viability, and event promoter ASO has made the decision to call off competition and have the rally's participants travel to Salta in formation as a caravan.
Contributing to the decision was the state of the Tupiza bivouac. The destination point of Sunday's stage is currently covered in water and mud, although the conditions are not as severe as they had been during last year's washout of the Oruro bivouac, likewise located in Bolivia.

The cancellation of the Monday stage marks only the second disruption to this year's edition. The opening stages in Peru were held entirely to distance, and only the stage between Peru's Arequipa and Bolivia's La Paz saw a 118km timed section cut for the bike and quad classes.

If you real stuck and nothing else helps - there is always a piece of heavy equipment from Caterpillar that will make some way to eascape. In this case Jordi Juvanteny, José Luis Criado and Javier Tamayo got stuck during #Dakar2018 Rallyraid in a huge sandbowl between dunes with their KH-7 6x6 truck.
A local heavy equipment operator helped them to "escape". Impressive scenery.

It was a dreadful 6th stage of the 2018 Dakar Rally to the capital of Bolivia, La Paz. Riders had moved on from Peru into Bolivia by the picturesque Lake Titicaca, the highest lake above sea level.
The assistance vehicles ran into rain and snow in the mountain passes which clogged up the entrance to La Paz.

Today’s stage will take the field to Arequipa, the final stop in Peru. It will be a long day for the drivers: the distance to be covered amounts to 934 kilometers, 268 of them against the clock. Motorbikes / quads on the one side and cars / trucks on the other will contest the stage on different routes.
And it goes without saying that the competitors once again will have to cope with dunes.

Joan "BangBang" Barreda: One day everything is fine and then the next day it’s all very sad. We have to stay focused on the goal. Today with all the difficulties that we had things turned out pretty well as we had planned, because tomorrow is the final day of the sand dunes.
We wanted to start out from behind to try attack tomorrow, so that was perfect. We had a doubt over a waypoint that didn’t appear to be positioned right and we had to ride around quite a bit to find it and we lost a few minutes in the end.

So, it’s a good position. It’s a shame Sunderland is out as he’s one of the strongest rivals. My hand injury was playing up a bit today; it’s not so bad in the dunes but hurts a bit up in the mountains, but I’ll just have to put up with it. Joan tweets @joanbangbang88
