A little detail you might not have noticed in Dead Boy Detectives.
So, I was encouraged by some lovies over on the DPDAS (Dead People Detective Agency server) to make this post about how I think we've seen more than just Death and Despair of the Endless in Dead Boy Detectives. If you look behind the boys who are pelting rocks at Charles before his death, you will see someone watching the crime happen. The figure is shadowed by a single overhead light, a streetlamp that seems a little out of place; they seem like they are wearing a robe/a cloak as you can make out little to none of their features. They also look like they are holding something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"oh, but that may be the night nurse!" you say.
The night nurse was holding her book to her chest, a small lamp light hovering over the book itself. For further proof, it isn't her; here, the figure is in the same shot as her.
Tumblr media
Though they are harder to make out, you can tell someone is still standing there and watching through the fog. And remember it's the night nurse who is going through Charles's memories; as she works for an endless, she would be able to see any who were there during the event
I believe this figure to be Destiny, as the description matches what we've seen so far. He wears a cloak, and he carries something, the book of Destiny.
Maybe it was destiny for Charles to die on that day to meet Edwin.
Thanks to Kos for getting the screen grabs and encouraging me to write this post.
We all just found it interesting since apparently there was an easter egg that we had missed.
I am now going to sleep; thank you for reading!

Just realized that Tumblr has a limit and you can only post 10 pics. I'll post a second part soon! :)

DBDA Season 2 Wishlist Part 2:
Seeing the inside of Charles' Bag of Tricks and learning more about the mechanics of it
Charles running into one/some of the bullies that killed him. They're much older now. Maybe he has realizations about them like Edwin did with Simon. Or maybe they're still scum attacking people, and Charles poltergeist-haunts their asses
Finding out more about how Edwin learned all these languages, magic tools, and supernatural creatures lore. Did he pick it up in Hell or after he got back from it?
On that note, what exactly went down with him in Hell? "--traded to a demon who traded me to another demon who traded me to something WORSE than a demon!"
Crystal family/ancestor tree realm and powers. I'd love to learn more about each woman at the table, like Avatar past reincarnation life flashbacks
Niko new character love interest?
Mission to help Tragic Mick. Maybe we get to see Sedna?! Crystal could potentially make that happen, since she addressed Lilith and the Forest Spirit.
The Dandelion Sprites/"gods"? become cursed to be mortals and now they have to figure out how to navigate the world as attention-seeking assholes. Maybe they work with Crystal's parents lol
Crystal and Charles really make a go at dating to see if those feelings can really go anywhere, but there ends up being quite a bit of conflict and difficulty. Still, we get lots of nice ship moments in the early half of the season.
Edwin has started accepting and leaning into modern gay culture and tries chatting up guys to distract himself from Charles and Crystal (trying to be a good friend to Charles, especially).
If they can get the copyright permission, please gods give us Edwin and Niko watching Heartstopper together. Charles happens to witness a bi Nick scene when he's walking through.
More Niko & Charles friendship development. They didn't get enough moments together in season 1.
More ghost possession! The Night Nurse is already well aware of them, so they're not alerting her. But of course she would not allow it.
Night Nurse refuses to be a secretary and forces the boys to do paperwork after every case. They've got homework now.
Also, in s1e1, there's a pregnant pause between Edwin and Charles talking about the dangers of possession. There's a story there, and I need to know it in season 2. What did Edwin do? Who'd he try to possess?
More clear explanation to the audience of how touch works between humans/ghosts and ghosts/ghosts on various planes (earth vs hell for example, so we can go back to scream and cry at s. 1)
Crystal and Niko girls' day sightseeing in England!
Now we're in London, we're back on the boys' turf. Where are their main hangouts, contacts, and magic shops? Do they have any place special to the two of them with nostalgic memories? It's been 30 years!!!
We've seen some Edwin culture clash (and I want more!) but also more Charles culture clash with modern times (charles: "😮‍💨 Can you believe they don't make mixed tapes anymore?" Niko: "🥰they do playlists online now. I'll make you one! " Crystal: "👀 You made mixed tapes, Charles?")
Cat King and Meowpheus interaction
Domestic friend fluff (core four all in a big bed together watching movies)
Feel free to add your own wishlist in the reblogs/comments! <3

This might have been discussed before but I haven’t seen it anywhere so: the comedy potential of the Night Nurse staying at the dead boy detective agency is absolutely insane. She knows little about the human world. And she doesn’t like any of the people she now has to work with. Absolute Chaos dialogues under the cut cause this post would be too long otherwise
Night Nurse: *knocks on Crystal’s door*
Night Nurse: Who the fuck is Charlie?
Crystal: you mean Charles?
Night Nurse: No- I know who Charles is, little girl.
Crystal: don’t call me th-
Night Nurse: it was Charles, in fact, who asked if I know about that Charlie and some angels of his. I know all about angels, was this ghost boy mocking me?
Crystal:
Crystal: Charles fucking Rowland didn’t Edwin tell you that the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ thing was a bad idea?
Night Nurse: *deep breath* aright if we have to work together I suppose it would be good to get to know each other
Night Nurse: so, how long have you two been together?
Charles: uh-
Edwin: we’ve been best mates ever since I… escaped hell the first time, around the time Charles died.
Night Nurse: *nods skeptically*
*later that day*
Night Nurse: so your name is Jenny?
Jenny: yes. If I understand correctly you’re an immortal being from the afterlife… or something?
Night Nurse: an eternal transdimensional being but I wouldn’t expect anyone to know the difference
Jenny: great, more supernatural stuff. Just what we needed.
Night Nurse: so, Jenny, you seem to me like the most normal around here.
Jenny: a sentence I never expected to hear, but go on.
Night Nurse: can you inform me what the phrase “best mates” means?
Jenny: seriously? Okay, from what I get it’s the British way to say best friends
Night Nurse: like, a couple?
Jenny: no, like best friends. Two very good friends.
Night Nurse: I’m sorry, I must have got this wrong somehow?
Jenny: clearly. What’s confusing?
Night Nurse: the Edwin boy said he and Charles are best mates but they seem too close with each other?
Jenny: *laughs* yeah, I thought so too. But sometimes friends are very close too. Not that I would know.
Night Nurse: and what makes a close friendship different from a… relationship?
Jenny: honestly, I think you’ve got the wrong person for these questions, I have no idea
Night Nurse: humans don’t make any sense
Night Nurse: I don’t think this will work, I’m going to get my own apartment.
Crystal: and how are you going to do this, exactly?
Night Nurse: I will go whichever local office is responsible for this type of transfers and get whatever papers necessary. I’ve spent all my time doing paperwork, how different can human paperwork be?
Edwin, under his breath: you have no idea
Night Nurse: In fact I will go right now.
Crystal: should we tell her?
Charles: Nah, let her find out the hell that is human-world paperwork
Charles: but this Night Nurse sabotaged our case!
Edwin: I know, just hold on a minute because I just had a most brilliant idea.
*whispers at Charles the plan*
Charles: you’re a genius, mate.
Edwin: I know, now let’s tell Crystal.
*the next day*
*knocks on the Night Nurse’s door*
Charles: hello miss Night Nurse
Crystal: we have brought you a present
Edwin: yes, we- ahem, we realized you were right…
Charles: *trying not to laugh* and we have brought this present to apologize
Night Nurse: that’s… nice of you kids… let me see
Night Nurse: *opens the box*
Night Nurse: *sees a fish tank with an angler fish identical to the one that swallowed her in ep 4*
Night Nurse: you. You evil, demon children how dare you
Edwin, Charles and Crystal all burst out laughing

Is Kashi in Dead Boy Detectives Kacha, son of the Hindu devas (gods), Brihaspati and Tara?
Kacha was a sage sent by the devas to learn from Shukra, an asura (demon).
He -
agreed to serve Shukra for 1000 years. Which would tally with Kashi's old man comment.
died 3 times. Kashi tells the Night Nurse, "I've lived many lives".
Is a sage, and his father is advisor to all the other devas. This recalls Kashi's offer of "good counsel" to the Night Nurse.
was revived from the belly of his teacher after his ashes were ingested.
But most importantly, what he learned from Shukra was a mantra to bring the dead back to life.
If Kashi is Kacha, this could be one way of bringing Niko back to life in season 2. Even if her body has been cremated.
This could also feed into Niko's desire to bring her father back, as well as conflict between Charles and Edwin (I think Charles would like to be alive again, but Edwin I'm not too sure).

HIIIIIIIIIII WE HAVENT TALKED IN A WHILE HRU
WHICH HYPERFIXATION ARE YOU ON NOW HUH 👀
AND WOULD YOU REC?
HIIIIIII, I FINISHED HIGH SCHOOL YESTERDAY AND I'M IN EXAMS SEASON SO I'M NOT DOING GREAT, HRU???
Girl, you just opened a big bag of worms cause this hyperfixation has taken over the other like 4 that were in my mind at the same time (one of them since January).
There are just a few things I have to warn you about the show before I throw my words at you: there is blood and violence, they do not shy from that; there is physical abuse mentioned and shown (although it's just shown in one scene, if that's the only thing bothering you but you wanna watch I can tell you when to skip); there is cursing, nothing major just what a high schooler would normally curse; abusive relationships and bullies are subjects that are heavily spoken about; death, don't know if that's a trigger but better safe that sorry and I'm pretty sure that's it
First, I have to ask you two questions:
Do you like supernatural stuff?
Do you like gays?
If the answer to both of them is yes, then you need to watch dead boy detectives. It's a series about two ghosts (Edwin Payne- "the brains", spent 70 years in hell, sassy little bitch, from London 1916 and speaks like it, gay, a fucking nerd, somehow everyone is in love with him except his crush (more like the crush doesn't know that he is in love with him, but whatever), so much trauma it's insane, tumblr's favourite; Charles Rowland- said crush, "the brawns", so bisexual but doesn't know it yet, do you know that character that is so charismatic and funny but actually has so much fucking trauma? That's him, daddy issues (because of abuse), from 1989, has a magical bag, so fucking british, so fucking protective of his friends it's insaneee like he will kill someone for them) and these two ghosts are detectives and solve cases to ghosts so they can move on to the afterlife.
This show is so fucking well written, you have no idea, like Charles and Edwin's relationship is so unique, because even though there is a romantic subtext they are best friends before eveything and they know eachother so well it's so rare to see such good friendship where they are so open with eachother in media specially between men (also their ship name is painland, if that's not enough reason to watch the show idk what is).
Another great example of the amazing writing is that characters like Charles normally have their trauma super overlooked, but in this show his trauma is treated so well, there is still a lot to work from it (reason 484837 why I need a season 2) but the other characters actually see his trauma and acknowledge it, it's so fucking satisfying to me because these type of characters are always my favourites but they always have that lack of development (I sometimes confuse between my mutuals who likes what but I'm pretty sure you have read hoo so you know Leo Valdez? Yeah, that's what I'm talking about).
Speaking of development, they do not leave characters behind. There is this character called Niko Sasaki, who is this girl who loves anime and loves love and is always so positive and so sweet and always thinking of others. Now, when someone describes this type of character, my first reaction is "oh, so she's just the comedic relief who is going to have a shallow ass personality" (no shade to that type of characters, shade to the writers who leave them behind), BUT SHE'S NOT. She also has her traumas (dead dad, literally almost dies, more shit that I don't wanna spoil) and they acknowledge it and they develop her. She may not be one of the main focuses of season 1 (I'm pretty sure if we get a season 2, she's gonna have more screen time because of... [spoilers]) but she still has some character development, in the 3rd episode they are solving a pretty brutal case and she says that she doesn't want to be part of it because she litterally almost died the previous week and it's totally okay, she stays at home watching scooby doo and eating noodles, again so fucking satisfying.
Since we're talking about Niko, I have to talk about the dynamics of this show because OMG THE DYNAMICS OF THIS SHOW. Like, you look at the way I described Niko and the way I described the boys and you would think that they would focus on Niko and Charles relationship, right? The two charismatic kids, makes sense. Wrong, it's actually Niko and Edwin's. At first, you're like "you're gonna pair Mr. Horrible at relationships with other people and hates physical touch with Ms. Loves love and hugs fucking everyone?" BUY IT WORKS, IT WORKS SO GODDAMN WELL, IT'S INSANE, they easily became my favourite dynamic of all times, it's so fucking good. Actually, Charles and Niko is the only dynamic that isn't really developed in this show (which is a crime honestly, how could they).
Another thing is that there is one (1) antagonist out of four who isn't likeable. And that fucker is litterally Crystal's abusive demon ex (I've realised now that I haven't talked about my queen yet, she's a bitch, she's a physic, she's fucking badass, she doesn't know who she is until the 8th episode (not in a philosophical way, she litterally loses her memory) and her dynamic with Edwin is fucking hilarious, it's an on going competion of who gets to be the bitcher). There is a witch who is immortal, kidnaps young girls to feed to her snake and has an obsession with getting revenge on the boys and Crystal (they hadn't met Niko when they confronted her for the first time), but she serves cunt everytime she's on screen and she's so hilarious, you love to hate her and deep down you also love her. There is a cat king who is the reason Crystal, Edwin and Charles get stuck in the town they spend the season (they live in London, the town is somewhere on the US coast, technically it's just Edwin who is stuck, but they're all ride or die) all because he wants to fuck Edwin but Edwin doesn't, but his hilarious and annoying in a funny way and a loser and a simp. There is a woman from the afterlife office who spends the whole season trying to catch the boys (who are running away from death, it's a whole thing), fails and ends up stuck with them, I just got mad at her when she interrupted a love confession, but we got it later so it's fine. Then there's David the demon (yes, that's his name, yes, that's hilarious) who is Crystal's abusive ex, is able to get inside her mind whenever he wants and is just so fucking annoying (but is such a great simbol of abusive relationships and how much they scare you even after it's over).
Also, no one, and I mean no one, in this fucking show is straight, whether it is confirmed or not it doesn't matter (although 4 of the nine recurent characters are canonically queer).
Don't know if you heard about it, but this is from the same universe as the show The Sandman and there are two cameos in this show (both Death and Despair get a scene).
There are two things that weren't perfect in this show: the fact that Charles and Niko got one (1) scene together (fucking crime) and the CGI, not that it's all bad it's just they focused on the more visual scenes that make you go uuhh and aaahhh but there is a roof where they sometimes talk where the CGI is so bad, but it's just background shit, do not decide not to watch because of it the only scenes like that are the roof scenes and a scene in the forest (again, background shit).
I did just spend around an hour writing all of this, you are not gonna read this whole ass essay, but just watch the show, it's on illegal sites Netflix (although if you have Netflix, put it, even if it's just background noise, we need the views, this is Netflix and a not that cheap queer show we're talking about)

The Night Nurse is so blinded by her job that she hears the Devlin girls tell the story of how they were saved and still thinks the boys are bad.
It's such a good thing she gets kicked into a fish and meets Kashi soon, she needs a reality check.

Dead Boy Detectives has everything:
Co Dependent queer platonic tough to define Best Freinds who would and have gone to hell for each other. they have an office with a cupboard full of board games, and a long history of Noodle Incident cases of '04, and also a bunch of maneuvers with code names. They are also ghosts who solve mysteries for other ghosts.
One is a sassy well read diva in a stupid little bowtie. he keeps meticulous notes, and went to hell on a technicality. he has no rizz and has a sexual awakening at the hands (paws?) of a supernatural Cat King
the other is a cheerful happy bruiser, the brawn with a pocket demension only he can navigate in his backpack, a magic cricket bat, and wells of anger deep down
they team up with a cool psychic (whos also a pretty tree) dealing with her asshole abusive boyfriend who was literally a demon while also trying to restore her memories (she also has a hilarious hate off off with the nerdy one)
then they add a sweet shut in who isn't very brave but is very inquisitive and has excellent reading comprehension and is actually the most brave
and their landlady is a hot goth Sapphic butcher who is done with their shit (but not really)
and the main antagonist is a cunt serving witch with an iron cane chewing up the scenery, just camp queen obsessed with Beauty and Revenge as she should be
she turns her crow familiar into an astrology loving twink to honeypot the nerdy one but the crow catches feelings whoops
the cat king who deserves his own mention again. he's here to seduce a stuffy British detective/tease, cause problems on purpose, reluctantly help solve those problems and mostly slut it up.
a bureaucrat learns to VERY reluctantly embrace the beautiful power of friendship after being swallowed by a fish
its set in a gorgeous seaside town with a light house! and a malt shop!
because this is all A Scooby Doo homage!
It's an episodic Case Of The Episode format! with strong serialized elements!
and as if that wasn't enough there's even Death of The Endless.
what more could any person possibly want in a show.
oh and there's a lot of really interesting themes around internalized homophpbia, abusive relationships and trauma and toxic anger and learning to love and trust and help other people again in spite of and because of the bad parts.

since edwin is very closed off, except for when he’s with his best friend, charles, costume designer kelli dunsmore reflected his buttoned-up mentality through his bespoke suit, complete with bowtie and collar. edwin’s outfit, along with charles’ period garb, were designed to help them stand out more in modern day port townsend. “i knew edwin would, because no one dresses like that now,” says dunsmore.
Tumblr media
dunsmore wanted everything about charles to feel “a little bit cool and underground,” from his union jack and the who bull’s-eye patches to his checkerboard pins. his little cross earring and chain on the outside of his shirt are also meant to be homages to the ’80s.
Tumblr media
in the show, crystal’s hero color is purple, which you’ll notice in her velvet coat and long silk letterman jacket, which dunsmore thought of as a psychic cloak with hand-embroidered patches, including the wilting rose of england.
Tumblr media
her brown trench coat represents an explosion of everything going on in her mind. dunsmore decided the scribbled words and drawings are a result of crystal writing all over it to express her inner turmoil. there are even lyrics on there from the song she’s listening to on the tube when she meets the dead boys.
Tumblr media
david’s connection with crystal seeps into her wardrobe, too. since david wears a flower shirt, dunsmore’s team hand-painted flowers onto crystal’s black boots. and niko is wearing a dark sweater with flowers on it when we first meet her, as an homage to crystal. the costume department also drew the same rune pattern the dead boys use to exorcise david in episode 1 onto crystal’s trench coat and on the tab of her wool bomber jacket. “so she’s always got some sort of protection,” says dunmore.
Tumblr media
every color niko wears is inspired by what’s happening in that episode, from the green post-sprite exodus to blue when she’s feeling sad. niko only wears a white look, with nods to her japanese heritage, in the finale as a reset. the charms on her obi belt represent the colors she’s worn all season.
Tumblr media
night nurse is someone who’s in control all the time and likes things to be in their proper place. dunsmore looked to vivienne westwood for inspiration, since everything in night nurse’s world is a bit exaggerated. (by the way, niko’s orange monochromatic look is a nod to her scenes with night nurse and night nurse’s red hair.)
Tumblr media
since david is a demon, he finds a london boy that looks cool enough for crystal to find attractive. that meant dunsmore dressing him in a shearling jacket you’d find in “all the guy ritchie movies,” black pants and creeper shoes. the costumer’s mood board for “david the d” featured radiohead and amy winehouse and her husband blake, who often wore hats similar to the one you see david wearing in the show.
Tumblr media
pay close attention to monty’s leather jacket and you just might spot an inlaid crow feather or two.
Tumblr media
it’s not only esther who wears clothes with a gilt, old-gold color — cat king and night nurse also do as a nod to their villainy. (esther and cat king also have similar fur coats.) amidst her beauty, dunsmore wanted esther to be a little rough around the edges. she wears a cuff around her hand that’s adorned with a snake and a ring with teeth all around it to represent the teeth she’s collecting from all the little girls. her eye necklace is meant to be her witch pendant.
Tumblr media
mischievous as ever, cat king has (cat) eyes everywhere and is aware of edwin’s affection for charles. so he wears charles’ socks the first time he meets edwin.

What I can read on the left:
"Edwin Payne was 15 years old at his time of death and was born 1900 in England. His height was 5'11" [even though it said 5'10" on the other form I posted about from episode 6 or 7] with a slender build, his hair colour was brown and his eye colour was blue-green."
Tumblr media
"Edwin Payne was chosen to be killed in a ritual that demanded a virgin sacrifice."
"Edwin Payne is to spend the next century in Hell as punishment for living such a sinful life. After completion, he will be reassigned to a more pleasant state."
Tumblr media
"Where was deceased born? : England"
"What language(s) was spoken by the deceased?" [still illegible, but different squiggles than from Charles' chart on the other post I made like this]
No information on his parents.
This is also from the "Don't Mess with the Notary" scene in s1e3. It goes by in a split second, the first page she turns over.
