Trigger warning: rape
AO3 writers and/or readers — since the previous poll in regards to this matter indicates the majority of AO3 users believe, as of this time when this is being written, that a work with Dubious Consent in Additional Tags should not be tagged as Rape/Non-con in the Archive Warning section, for the two are not the same when it comes to fiction — if a work contains the storyline where the consent is extremely dubious that it comes very close to outright Rape/Non-con (for instance, the intercourse starts as rape, but a part of the victim secretly enjoys the assault later into the act, but they either still try to fight their rapist or are too wounded/too weak to fight, before their body ultimately reaches orgasm and they feel disgusted at themself for getting aroused, they also feel disgusted at themself for loving it deep down) but the work is still within the Dubious Consent category, is it encouraged for said work to also warrant Rape/Non-con tag in the Archive Warning section?
*This poll was submitted to us and we simply posted it so people could vote and discuss their opinions on the matter. A FANTASY WHUMP PROMPT
human-whumpee was lost in the woods and was severely injured. they stumbled upon a witch who offered them a magic balm that would heal them. whumpee was too out of it to hear what the cost was (or maybe the witch was just sneaky and didn’t tell them about that). fast forward to after the balm healed them, they soon realized the change in their appearance, in the sense that their hands slowly morphed into paws with sharp claws, and their teeth only grew sharper and sharper until they became dog fangs in their mouth. turned out the witch was looking for her very own pet or a guard dog, and not only did the balm work as a healing potion, it also worked as a curse. and before whumpee knew what was happening to them, they were already on all four beside the witch’s throne as her dog.

what people think pro ship means: dangerous people who want to harm children in real life and/or think taboo subjects in real life are justified
what pro ship actually is about: the belief that people are allowed to enjoy fictional thing however they want, as long as it's fictional and no one in real life gets harmed or harassed in any way, and as long as they tag their trigger warnings properly.
most pro ship folks I've come across are just "hey, you like this fucked up thing that is fictional? okay, cool. you do you, man. I myself don't even like this thing that you like, but hey, it's not real. and I trust that you know the difference between fiction and reality, so you do you. if it ever gets too much for me, I will just block or mute you and move on with my life, but that doesn't mean I think you're a horrible person in real life because of the fictional thing you like, it just means I'd rather not see or engage with this thing that can make me uncomfortable. I still want you to have fun doing what you love, and I still think you're cool as fuck. love and respect, dude"
meanwhile most anti ship I've seen are like "omg you like this fictional thing where fictional children are harmed??! Red Flag Red Flag. put this gross piece of shit behind bars immediately!!!"
and I'm just ????? I don't normally engage in fandom wars, but I think, as long as you don't harass anyone in real life and as long as no one in real life is in danger or is harmed, how you enjoy fictional things is none of my business. and I'm not gonna make any "call out post" where I encourage my followers to harass you because you like fucked up fictional things that I personally don't like or believe is wrong either.
I mean, from personal experience, I was exposed against my will to thing I didn't want to see from anti's screenshot of fanart or fanfic where they encourage their followers to harass this person whose fanart or fanfic, that was screenshot and spread by them, was originally tagged properly with all the trigger warnings so that people who didn't want to see it wouldn't get exposed to it. until anti screenshot it and flaunted it around in the name of being morally superior while also, at the same time, advocated for the witch hunt against someone who just wanted to mind their own business. so... the irony. lol
fandoms used to be more peaceful before Fandom Police starts their witch hunting, but it's a good thing we can just block these people and keep on enjoying our blorbos however we want to enjoy them.
and I'll always encourage every artist to write whatever they want, draw whatever they want. don't let people who think they're "morally superior" tell you you can't make art this way or that way. my best advice would be to block and ignore and keep on creating what you want. they may be loud, but at the end of the day they're just noises and they're not worth your attention x

here’s your reminder to sort ao3 fics by date posted / date updated too and not just kudos.
because more often than not, the fics that have lesser kudos are the hidden gems. a fic with no kudos could be one of the best fics you would ever read, and you would never get to read it if you only sought popular fics with hundreds or thousands of kudos. I’ve said this before, and I’m saying it again; kudos do not represent how well-written a fic is, the only thing kudos represent is how popular it is, and popularity doesn’t always necessarily reflect quality.
not saying popular fics aren’t good, of course, all I’m saying is that the number of kudos is never supposed to be used to indicate how well-written a fic is — fics that aren’t as popular can be just as good or even better. but they stay hidden because, by sorting fics by kudos, people won’t even find them to begin with.
there are so many talented writers out there whose works don’t get enough appreciation because people only sort fics by kudos.
speaking from first hand experience, most of the best fics I’ve read aren’t one of those popular ones, but rather the ones that are hidden gems.
don’t let hidden gems stay hidden, guys. give them a chance.

I adore whumpees who act like they’re fine for the caretaker’s sake, who accept physical touch even when they don’t want to for fear of the caretaker leaving them. I adore whumpees who think caretaker is their new whumper. I adore whumpees who want so desperately to make caretaker happy, but don’t know how (still in the slave mindset of “how can I serve caretaker?”) when all caretaker really wants is to see whumpee heal and think of their own happiness for a change. I adore whump where the physical danger is gone, but the emotional rollercoaster has just begun.
You. Get. It. 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

I have one blorbo I can read/write whump for/about and feel all the feelings but I’m not haunted by it. I have another I can read/write whump for/about and I’m crying, destroyed, ready to be a vigilante against fictional characters and I’m haunted. The latter blorbo is just as badass as the former blorbo but idk, maybe I just love him more? Am I the only one with this conundrum about two blorbos?
I don't think you're the only one, and I don't think it's unusual to experience different feelings about different characters either.
I mean, for me, personally, I only get 'whumperflies' with specific blorbos of mine, or — I have to imagine my blorbo as the whumpee in each random whump scenario, or even a whump scene from a movie or a show that isn't even my blorbo's source material, in order for the whumperflies and these sorts of euphoria (that tingling sensation in my stomach) to hit.
I like whump (obviously) but I don't get whumperflies with just any characters unless they're my blorbos.
TL;DR, I always have to imagine this specific blorbo as the whumpee in every whump story. it's also worth mentioning that I also have other blorbos who can shift from whumpee to whumper to caretaker in different separate fics I read or write. but this (first) blorbo I mentioned earlier is so whumpee material that I can only imagine him as the whumpee, and I shamelessly get off on the euphoria of the whumperflies that comes if it hits me in the feels just right.
anyway, I guess what I'm saying is, it's perfectly normal to feel different feelings when it's different characters. maybe you're more connected with this character (or, yes, maybe you love him more) than you do the other one that you can be haunted by what happened to him — but in the same time your mind doesn't react this strongly to what happened to the other character. it's normal and it's so cool in my opinion that we get to experience all these types of feelings.

about this poll everyone should go vote (nothing against the admins or even the poll itself by the way!!!)
“you should stop writing fanfics once you’ve reached a certain age so you can focus on your family and actual career” is such a silly concept because why should someone stop having fun and doing what they love once they’re “too old” for it, especially when “something they love” in question isn’t even some extreme sports that could be limited by age? like what the fuck is that mindset???? who cares if you’re 80 and still write fanfic. hell, if you can do it and it makes you happy, then fuck anyone who thinks you should give up the source of your happiness because of something as silly as an age.
experience is one of the factors, guys, one of the reasons older people write better fics is because they’ve been writing for a long time and they have more experience.
you can focus on your family and actual career while still doing what makes you happy.
I hope every fanfic writer out there keeps on writing and doesn’t let some troll make them think they have to give up their source of happiness just because they’re “too old to write about fictional characters” Jesus Christ

Situation that's been rolling around my head recently:
Whumpee hears people entering Whumper's house. They desperately start trying to think of a plan to escape or call for help from these strangers.
But before they can do anything, Whumper comes to retrieve Whumpee themself. Because the guests in the house are people after Whumper's own heart, and Whumpee is going to be their entertainment for the evening.
Honestly, the possibilities for all sorts of whumpiness are endless.
or… hear me out, the one where whumpee — when whumper was away or wasn’t looking — desperately begged a stranger for help and told them how they were kidnapped by whumper, only for the stranger to chuckle and go tap whumper in the shoulder before telling them (whumper) they should “control their pet a little better”, all while smirking and looking whumpee right in the eye.
the pure terror and hopelessness when whumpee realized…

AO3 is wild because it’s the only place where you’ll see an author’s note that reads, “sorry, guys 🥺 English isn’t my first language” and the fic they wrote is a 100k-word-long of the most professionally written slow burn enemies-to-lovers with intense angst, heartbreaking tragedy, heartwarming humor, incredibly drama, shocking plot twists and the most beautiful dynamics with depth and complexity between the characters that made you laugh, cry, blush, kick your feet, hold your breath, dig your nails into the pillow, cry some more and smile to yourself like an idiot, and you’ll think about how insane it is that the author wrote the whole thing in their free time. for free. out of pure love and passion they have for these characters. and how it’s not only better than canon — how the author doesn’t just understand the characters better than what they’re given in the piece of media they’re originally from — but also better than some of the best selling novels you’ve read. just wild.

one of the things I see the most in any fandom space is pearl clutching people saying how “shocked” they are when it turns out a “problematic” ship or a “problematic” character is loved a lot in said fandom.
the most recent example for me would be from this poll where it asks people to vote which ship they like the most, thousands of fans have voted, and the results happen to show the ship that is — according to these people — most problematic has won. needless to say, hundreds of these “noble people who usually harass real people, who just want to ship their little ship in peace, over fictional characters in the name of being morally superior” are so shocked that such a “harmful and problematic” ship is the one that is most liked within the fandom they’re in.
I mean… I don’t know what to tell you, but just because you’re “loud” and you like to “witch hunt” people who enjoy fictional things that you think is Bad, doesn’t mean the ship or the character you deemed Problematic is actually hated by the majority of the fandom you’re in.
sure, you are allowed to hate these ships and these characters for any reason, but other people are allowed to like them. and surprise surprise, the world doesn’t revolve around you and your mindset that Liking Bad Fictional Things Equals Condoning Bad Things in Real Life.
shocking, I know. but most sane people can actually distinguish the differences between fiction and reality. and that’s why people who like fictional villains aren’t actually serial killer in real life.
fandom is and has always supposed to be a safe and fun space in which anyone can like and enjoy whatever they want. it never is, and it’s never supposed to be a courtroom where someone’s moral compass is judged based on how they enjoy Fictional Things. because the whole point of enjoying a ship or liking a fictional character is that it’s fictitious, it’s not real. no one in real life is getting killed because a hot fictional villain is loved by hundreds and thousands of fans.
I hope you feel better soon though 🤍
