what farming items in mmorpgs has taught me: i used to think using ice trays to make ice cubes was free but after thinking about it i have to pay the electric bill to power the freezer so every moment that i’m not freezing new trays of ice cubes is a moment that i’m underutilizing the freezer and increasing the cost of ice cubes. i have to constantly swap out ice trays for new ice cubes on an hourly rotation on a 24 hour basis or else i won’t produce the maximum amount of ice cubes possible and will underutilize the full potential of my electric bill. i need to stop using all other appliances and utilities in my home to make more ice cubes

So here's the thing about this - it's right, but it's also incomplete. Your most standard arcade games back then had to be made to be immediately understandable, and that meant simple established concepts or ideas. Race, run, chase. Pac-Man was very aptly described by one of my game design teachers as a hunter gatherer simulator. Anyone can understand. And aside from image games like Defender most only had a button or two for ease of use and programming.

But the cabinets would give you an amazing backstory sometimes if you let attract mode run, and arcade flyers told the story too. That also translated to the home console wherein the manual told you the story and if you were autistic enough you get to know that all the bricks in Super Mario Bros used to be mushroom people, or that Donkey Kong was Mario's mistreated pet ape.

The narratives were always there. you just had to find them yourself.
