Writing Assignment 3
For my 2D project, firstly, I did research about the meaning and history of “Zarf”. According to the research, zarf is the protection for a coffee cup do the concept of this project is protection. Zarf in the history had more decoration on its design but we call zarf as “sleeve” nowadays and it doesn’t have much design. Therefore, I’m trying to combine both design in my 2D project. I use the shape of sleeve and design style of zarf. I use the template of cup sleeve as the shape and collect the photos of zarf in the ancient to combine zarf both in history and nowadays. However, the print of the final work could be improved. It can have a sense of touch and feel like the jewelry on the zarf. For the 3D assignment, I will focus on letter design of “zarf” and use iron wire to make the zarf. For me, 4D assignment will be the most difficult because I'm not good at doing video and adding different sound effects. For the 4D project, I am thinking about doing the history of zarf.

Layout of 2D print
Zarf simply means "envelope" in Turkish. We know it as "the cardboard sleeve that you put around your to-go coffee cup". It starts in 13th century in Turkey when the first Turkish coffee houses were created and their famously robust coffee was served ceremoniously. According to Turkish Style Ground Coffee, under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, which banned alcohol, coffee became the premier social drink. Turkish coffee houses became the destinations where discussions regarding the present political and social climate captivated the men-only facilities for hours. Zarf is an old word which represents envelope and container. It used for protecting your fingers from hot liquid, the cup is then placed into a decorative holder, usually made of metal. However, we don't call it “zarf” now. It has a name of “sleeves” for hot coffee or tea.

Zarf history
To understand that, we have to go back to 16th century Turkey when the first Turkish coffee houses were created and their famously robust coffee was served ceremoniously. According to Turkish Style Ground Coffee, under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, which banned alcohol, coffee became the premier social drink. Turkish coffee houses became the destinations where discussions regarding the present political and social climate captivated the men-only facilities for hours. They became such a powerful cultural thread that the sultan of the Ottoman Empire, threatened by these gatherings, banned coffee altogether in the 17th century. The people revolted and the sultan reluctantly reopened coffee houses, albeit with a heavy tax. Today, Turkish coffee houses are still the social and cultural epicenters, and the coffee is consumed much the same way as they did centuries ago. Just as the preparation of coffee is painstakingly ritualistic, so is how the coffee is served. Because coffee signifies friendship and loyalty, the server presents it ornately to illustrate their affection. It is poured into a small porcelain cup called a kahve finjan which doesn’t have any handles. Because the liquid is so hot, the cup is then placed into a decorative holder, usually made of metal, called a zarf. This combo is then placed onto an artistic serving tray with a glass of water and a little sweet treat now categorized as “Turkish delights”. Zarf simply means “envelope” in Turkish. We know it as “the cardboard sleeve that you put around your to-go coffee cup”.

Writing Exercise 2
From the process of critique, I show the meaning of zarf (holder that protect your fingers from hot liquid). So “protection” will be the concept I'm going to work on. I got the idea about zarf can not only for a cup. It also can be a protection for phones, computers, or other items that need to be protected. Zarf is an old word and we call that “sleeves” now, so zarf also can be phone cases, computer bags, or book covers... From classmates’ comments, I'm thinking the word of “Zarf” widely. Therefore, for 2D print, I will add more examples about what zarf can be used in different ways. In addition, for the 3D and 4D assignment, I got an idea about use the word “zarf” to do sleeves. I will add this idea as a part of my 3D design.

Zarf & Writing Assignment 1
Research image about zarf:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are two example of old style of zarf.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two examples are what we use nowadays for zarf.
The meaning of zarf: A zarf is a holder, usually of ornamental metal, for a coffee cup without a handle.
Zarf is an old word which from the Arabic word ظرف ẓarf, meaning "container, envelope".
The material of zarf in 13th century:
Metal zarfs were sometimes filigree work, sometimes decorated with chasing, niello, engraving, or set with gems or other precious stones.
Wooden zarfs, very few of which remain, were favored because of the natural aroma of the wood from which they were fashioned. They were very fragile.
Tortoiseshell, horn and ivory zarfs required special skill to make. In the first two cases, sheets of the material in question were softened in hot water and then clamped in a mold to create the required shape. Ivory was carved in the same way as wood; however, its greater value meant that more care was needed to avoid mistakes.
The material of zarf nowadays are made of cardboard.
Although coffee was probably discovered in Ethiopia, it was in Turkey at around the thirteenth century that it became popular as a beverage. As with the serving of tea in China and Japan, the serving of coffee in Turkey was a complex, ritualized process. It was served in small cups without handles, which were placed in holders known as zarfto protect the cup and also the fingers of the drinker from the hot liquid. Cups were typically made of porcelain, but also of glass and wood. However, because it was the holder that was more visible, it was typically more heavily ornamented. The zarf was often made from metal, with silver, gold, copper, and brass being the most common materials used. Others were also made of woods such as coconut, ebony or other hardwoods, or of ivory, bone, horn, or tortoiseshell. Today, zarfs are typically made out of cardboard, like the ones used for hot beverages such as coffee and tea.
