Major Project Title (Or working title - how and why did this title develop?)

“Social Rebound” At the beginning, the title of my work was “How to measure the power of legal punishment and moral punishment”. I wanted to use clear title to make my work to be more understandable. However, after my discussion with my tutor, both of us believed that for such kind of somewhat sensitive topic, it was more appropriate to be a little bit obscure in the title. Hence, I finally chose “Social Rebound” as the work title.

The morality-trampling behaviour of someone is bound to cause stinging social response and arouse public anger to a great extent. At that time, there must be someone standing out to give punishments. Such punishments are unpredictable, uncontrollable and even illegal and cannot be dominated or incited by a single person. Such punishments may pose threats to your personal and property safety. It is likely that the damage you have suffered may even outweighs the rascality itself. This is an objective presence of self-protection mechanism of the moral system and is also the general rule of human society.

Research Methods (What methods have you used during this phase of the project and how have they helped you develop your ideas and inform your major project proposal?)

In the early stage of producing this work, that is, since the end of 2016, I have spent a lot of time doing news related investigations. Specifically speaking, I conducted in-depth explorations to three different types of criminal offense cases in recent two years and analyzed and comprehended the three cases through collecting news reporting videos, the statements of involved parties, direction of public opinion and media reporting to legal punishments. Apart from that, my observations to various kinds of social media software, newspaper and television and media reporting videos clarified my ideas and provided me with a specific direction concerning the messages I would like to convey through my work. I discovered a similarity among the three different cases, revealing my general understandings to them. I am longing to express my thoughts through the way of photography.

Pilot Project (What have you achieved through the development of your pilot project/s? What have you learned from the process? Identify the main concepts that might direct or drive your major project.)

This work intends to reveal a social issue that is just around us or a humanity fact. There are also open questions to all of us: how do we balance legal sanction and moral sanction in our cognition? Which one is more authoritative and more powerful? As is known to all of us, law is the most authoritative. Certainly, it should be equipped with stronger power and ability correspondingly. However, under some circumstances, legal punishments are not as effective as moral punishments even compare with its commensurate enforcement and punitive measures. My work is originated from my one-year following and investigations to a real criminal case that happened in both Japan and China (for details, please refer to my blog). This work also comes from a continuous doubt in my mind, that is, can we say that moral punishments are of greater power if a person has violated the social moral baseline without violating the law and hence suffers from moral punishments that are far more detrimental to the person himself or herself compared with severe legal punishments to a murder and will be brought with unimaginable and long-lasting harm for his or her whole life. Through my creation of the work, I tried to understand the two characters from my personal perspective and imagine my reaction if I come across similar situation through the scene construction in my mind. Gradually, I have had some understandings to the environment and atmosphere they were in as well as their mental activities. I settled down two different scenes and character images step by step. Moreover, I have had some command of the way of applying different colored lights to illustrate character’s mental activities and create sharp character contrasts.

Audience and Context (Has a consideration of Context and Audience made you think about your project in a particular way? Have you been aware of the histories, conventions and audience expectations of particular contexts? Have you considered different contexts and how have you responded to them?)

During my creation process, I browsed some reports’ articles concerning the evaluations to such cases and they all stood on different perspectives. I interviewed some of the reporters about their attitudes and thoughts toward those cases and shared my thoughts with them. They had similar doubts as I did, however, at the same time, they believed that such phenomenon is quite common. Under the Internet era in which information is transmitted rapidly, people hide themselves behind the screens and supervise the behavior of other people except themselves. Everyone can be a critic or a policeman, which reminds us of the importance of self-discipline and self-management. Their answers make me realize the reason why the direction of public opinion can be such a strong and powerful weapon. Hopefully, my work can make audiences directly understand the uncertainty of the environment in which we are in.

Is the approach you have chosen effective in communicating your ideas to the identified audience?)

After the settlement of the theme of my work, I recruited one actor to present the character image considering the demand to present character psychological activities with the hope of comprehending the psychological condition of the character in a more natural way. One of the difficulties in completing the work was that the scene should be in prison. Through investigations, I recognized that in 2012 there was a prison-themed hotel called Alcatraz Hotel being opened in London. The environment and facilities inside all corresponded well with my demands. However, I later found that the hotel was opened for only three months. I had no choice but kept searching for other alternatives. Luckily, there was another prison-themed hotel in London. Although the environment was kind of far from my requirement, the atmosphere there was pretty good. I booked a room and the shooting time pretty soon and bought props such as prisoner costume and handcuffs. Since the shooting had to be done indoors, the light was pretty dark. To have satisfactory photography performances, I used flashlights and flashlight filters. Color presence is of great significance in this work. To create prison environment and atmosphere, I tried many kinds of different coloring styles and finally decided to apply vast green color in the work. Shōji Ueda’s work has provided me with many inspirations on color and space applications. Different colors can bring different sensual experience. Actually, colors can present people’s emotions. Good application of space structures can directly express photographer’s ideas and present the substantial meanings behind the work.

These two articles make me realize that results will be divergent if we think from different angles towards the same case. Hence, to realize the ideal justice, we have to have a clear mind and consider comprehensively to draw a rational conclusion in the end.

I want to apply photography as a carrier to express my understandings to current society. I hope I can inspire everyone in the era to think seriously about the relationship between humanity and morality in the modern society and the direct interaction of legal system and public supervision under the Internet era through my works.

I want to apply photography as a carrier to express my understandings to current society. Context / Audience (Where will it be seen / who is it for?

My work will be shown in exhibition hall through videos. My audience is every person who shares the same doubt with me and every person who lives in the same era with me.

Proposed form, medium, presentation (How will you execute it and present it?)

The final works will be shown in a video that involves the different angles of two persons. There will be two characters in different situations being shown on the screen. The first character is a man who violates morality standards and is abused greatly by the public. His living environment seems to be quite normal but resembles a prison. The second character violates the law and is punished. He lives in a prison but his world is calm and relaxed. I will show strong visual impacts and contrasts to the reality from their perspectives.

In this shooting. I have some difficulties with lighting，because the scene is indoor, the lighting condition is very dark and i want to create colorful atmosphere, in order to avoid the high ISO images, generate noise, I chose to use the flash and color filters and tripod，these photos were taken before the flash were used，the quality of these image is not good，so after this shooting i have decided to use flash every time and turn off all the light in the room otherwise the color filter will not work.

At the beginning of this project i have spent most of the time doing researches, digging news and videos from the past and read articles that wrote in the past and present. These two articles are wrote from two different prospective by a litigant and a outsider. So i can fully understand the details of the whole event from a several angle. I have searched and read a lots of related articles which all have different opinions, in this way it helps me a lot in idea development.

Zhao's father（image 1） became a vegetable in a traffic accident, the treatment in a hospital for a year cost huge medical expenses, so zhao gave up good job opportunities, take care of his father in the hospital for more than a year, spent all their savings, but the guilty driver（image 3） has been in the escape legal liability, refused legal judgment, and in the media interview she said she would rather spend time in prison than pay the medical expenses, the incident so far have not been resolved, people have accused huang of violation of the basic principles of the person, because she don't take responsibility for our actions. The way she tried to escape from the punishment of the law，treat the victim. This is the most ferocious trampling of human morality. When she trampling the bottom line of social morality. It is doomed to trigger a social rebound，the rebound is not controllable，inevitably，No one is able to dominate and incite. This is the objective manifestation of the self-protection mechanism of the moral system. The general laws of human society.

Compare the influence between legal punishment and moral punishment

From my my prospective of view，the main way for human society to maintain the mainstream morality is morality and law. In society，people needs to know how to avoid these two rules，self-discipline and self-consciousness are our attitude. Breaking the law is a compulsory punishment by the state to impose a fine on you. As for the violation of moral standards，the state can't manage it，but it will be condemned by the public opinion. Generally speaking，the law is more fearful. After all，dozen's of pounds‘ fines can't be escaped. But contrary to morality，a person of amoral will think that other's can’t do anything to them. It is because of this mentality，many people put morality in the sole of foot，immensely proud and pleased with oneself.

How we measure the power of legal punishment and moral punishment

In this project i will be discussing law punishment and moral punishment, how we understand them and measure them. And the research of this project will be based on two true crimes that is happening right now in Japan and China which i have been follow for a long time. This two events had a great impact on me，it completely changed the way i used to understand about humanity，country culture and the power of society....

The first two images i attached shows three key person and that has involved in this crime,The last images was the locality of the crime.

Jiang is the girl that been killed（Picture 1 girl on the right），Liu is the girl that survived（Picture1 girl on the left）, Chen is the criminal who use prepared knife stabbed Jiang 12 times.（picture2）  

This ruthless tragedy happened on 03/12/16 . Chen，Jiang, Liu were just three normal students study in Japan， Chen and Liu were a couple and they were living together. There is one day after they had a big flight Liu decided to move out，she complained to Jiang and Jiang felt really sad for Liu  after she heard what happened，Jiang was very generous and even asked Liu to move in with her even though she knew it is illegal and dangerous because Jiang‘s’apartment is not  allowed to live two people，if they been found out live together they will be deported to China .   After Liu and Jiang moved together ，Chen keep sending messages to Liu and threaten Liu to get back together with him otherwise he will post her naked piacture to the public,  he even followed them home. On 03/12/16 after Chen followed them get home， Liu walked into the apartment first，and while Jiang was gonna step into the apartment Chen stopped her and covered her mouth tell her not to make sound，he tell Jiang he is just wanna talk to Liu to get her back. Jiang choose to stand out to defense her friend Liu and then they start fighting each other she  tried to break loose from him embrace but no matter how hard she tried she failed and  that is when Chen took his prepared knife stabbed into Jiang’s neck against the door，During the whole time Liu was in the apartment，she heard the noise and realized something bad is happening to Jiang， Jiang  is in great danger， but she got so scared， she did not open the door when Jiang is desperately knocking door trying to get into the apartment，she hide behind the door and the minute  she realized the situation she knocked door and not trying anything to save her friend even though she know Jiang is fighting with Chen because of her. She chosen to be a coward.And Chen was arrested two hours later after he killed Jiang.

After this event happened，it has caused a great repercussion in China. Millions of people are following this news. But somehow all the focus of public attention is on Liu instead of Chen. Everyone is judging her，her address，telephone number and even her family‘s information are all got exposed to the public， people texting her，calling her ，insulting her，She could not go out but stay at home for almost one year，She found a job but one moth later she got fired because anyone who takes her will be effect. She have no choice but stay at home. She received more condemnation of  public opinion than the murderer because she violated the moral standards，Everyone knows about what have she done so even though half year past people still remember.

So the question is why she been restricted at home even though she did not break any law? And Why in this crime she suffered all the public condemnation instead of the killer？ From my perspective of view，The law and justice made Chen a prisoner but at the same time the consensus made  Liu become a prisoner as well.

Kanako Higuchi

From my perspective of view i believe that it is important for a photographer to know how to control and how to personalize the expression using color. Color is an important visual element of photography. It is important to me to learn how to use color to sublime the quality of works and how to  lay out the image elements in the image to get strong, dynamic photos,mastery of the unique emotional reaction of the character. I have experiment a few methods to create the right atmosphere. And also i have spend some time communicate with the model about the concept of my project and ideas behind it to get them to understand the character they gonna play in my work and lead them to perform the right expression and inner feeling.

 Horror Film<Suspiria> directed by Dario Argento,

The film is very bold in the use of color, and the color and lighting is just perfect，which inspired me a lot about how to make use of color and light to render the atmosphere and create an correct atmosphere.

Dario creates a very unique viewing experience for the audience with a unique image technique. Every lens is like a fine painting. In a night outdoor scene, but the background of a white Rome style building, surrounded by empty darkness, helpless victims in which blankly celebrating its tragic fate, the whole scene as a drama, highly visual focus of dramatic. In the vast majority of indoor scenes, especially in nighttime scenes, there is a strong sense of surrealism of red, yellow and blue alternating background color by special means. With John Carpenter evaluation of the movie, "the scene of a movie is just like a dream."

On violence and beauty： reflections on war

In this work, Lashai - no stranger to conflict herself - delicately appropriated Goya’s etching. She removed the figures from their backgrounds, placing them in a projection. As the light moves across the grid, for a second or two, the viewer sees each images as Goya intended, replete with torture and agony, before a desolate landscape takes its place. These haunting empty landscapes invite us to consider how a place can hold the memory of atrocities perpetrated within it.

This exhibition has brought me two different inspirations that helps me develop my project:

1: It is very important for me to manage to search the best/closed  way to present the work in order to approach the key concept of the work. It will emphasize the core idea and gives the strongest influence. And it is essential to understand what is the core idea that we try to express when we present it to the public. In Lashai’s work, she used projection as a tool combined still images with animated images together to express and emphasize the idea of how a place can hold the memory of atrocities perpetrated within it.

2: "War" has never really stopped since ancient times. No how bad the condition is, when conflicts happen between people and people, these conflicts will leave traces of trauma to our spirit or body, and also leave traces in time and place.

Project title:  EMOTIONS OF GROCERY

From the beginning of this project, I start with a research about the works which is related to creative photography that is transformed based on the subjects including foods and supplies. The masterpieces of some artists and illustrators such as Chris Moore and David E. Bishop have inspired me a lot. Nevertheless, compared to the commercial-oriented creative design, I prefer the creations that are in accordance with the personal ideas and the illustrations with photography are also collected, and then series of sculptures that are transformed on the basis of the subjects of Grocery will be created. Subsequently, I start collecting information and interviewing people about their opinions about grocery and their feelings about grocery with explaining the reasons of their different views. Since the experiences and the feeling about different things are various among each other, it can be concluded that there are dramatic contrasts among their opinions. For instance, some people hate cotton candy while some people are obsessed with it. And people of different gender feel more different about various things. Consequently, I make an interview about the feelings of a group people who are different with other in terms of age, gender and occupations.

My works will merge three elements including illustration，geometrical pattern，and decoration into the photography to create the photographic based figures sculpture pieces. The works will be closely related to our daily life and they will be gone through the secondary creative transformation based on the common objects people can usually see so that the common things in life will be merged into the photography and give a strong visual arts impact.

Visual Research Reflect on how key photographers / visual artists who are relevant to your project research have impacted upon the development of your project? Explain how they influenced your approach and what you learned from them.

I have searched great number of visual artists and their masterpieces, among them the works of the life photographers and illustrators are also included. The photographers and illustrators can be listed as Bill Debold，Parish Kohanim，George Nakano，Chris Moore，David E.Bishop，Benno Gross，Stak Aivaliotis, who have changed the common objectives that are lack of artistic such as food, electrical appliances, and clothing into highly creative Visual artworks by the means of photography and illustration. By observing their works that can provide people with strong visual enjoyment from both of color and creation, my works have been influenced to great extent by three masterpieces among them. The most important and necessary elements which include color decoration, creative design (creative ideas) as well as the composition are the key points that I away focus on in the later creation.

Aims, Objectives, Concept Discuss your aims and objectives and the main concept for your project and evaluate how successfully these have been resolved.

The goals and main concepts of my project are the abstract creative arts that are nimble and resourceful，Geometric and illustration element in visual design utilization that combined with photography. By taking the widespread and the most common items in life as objectives combined with color decoration and illustration and then make the secondary creative transformation, the strong visual arts impact will be created. And the most important thing is that the geometric elements are involved. The geometric elements in the creative arts are the common expression means, which play a vital role in the modern vision design. A strong feeling of artistic sculpture pervades the work, and the artistic constructions are purely made up of the primal elements of geometry, color and line. It is the idea that I put into my final works, and my final sculpture is quite successful in that reflects those elements I wanted to merge into the works.

Production Reflect on the specific production methods you have been exploring and how these approaches and visual strategies have affected your project development.

After interviewing people about their perceptions and feelings about the grocery and the corresponding reasons, I chose some interesting items out of the information collected and then classify them into different types. By creatively transforming the chosen items, I adopted illustration and decoration in transformation and shot them with different color match. One of the most interesting part is the image printed on the fabric，I have chosen different fabric to create various visual effect and printed them in various size to make the artworks more colorful and interesting. In the end, I cut out the separate photos and then use a sewing machine to sew each fabric in the thicker cotton. For some of them, I put the colorful cardboard folders under the fabrics with the aim of making the photo more colorful and making up the drawback of perspective of the silk fabrics so as to achieve the best results.

Presentation How effectively have you communicated your ideas in relation to your identified audience and context?

I hope that my works can bring strong visual impact of color to the audiences at the first sight as well as the abundant feeling about the works so that a sense of confusion will occur to the audiences for which they will wonder what items in the picture are and how they are made and what’s related to them. At last, the audiences will realize that the dull and ordinary groceries in life can also be artistic and interesting after the integration of different elements by secondary transformation.

Evaluation Identify the strengths and weaknesses of your project and what you might do to improve it in the future?

When printing pictures on the cloth, the original features of photos will be changed to a large extent because of the different fabrics. Given that, I need to do more experiments in choosing the suitable fabrics and be more careful not to touch the water after printing. Besides, much attention should be put on the usage of the fabrics on the sewing because the soft fabric will make sewing rather difficult and complex.
