The Santino Hassell Debacle

A storm is brewing in the MM romance teacup and it is a doozy. It is primarily spread out over twitter and goodreads, with some of the drama happening on facebook. Several people have expressed confusion as to what in the everloving fuck is going on. 

Well, never fear, we are here to make sense out of this beautiful clusterfuck in the style of old fandom wank.

ETA: At the time this was first written and posted, we didn’t fully understand its scope. We haven’t edited out our original tone because that would be disingenuous, but we do take this topic, and what it means for MM publishing as a whole, very seriously.

Summary (for those of us without the time or energy): Santino Hassell is a relatively big name author in the MM romance genre. He had always been up front about being a bisexual single dad with multitude of medical problems and a hard past. Allegations emerge that Sonny might be a persona created by a married couple (Marvin and Alicia Hassell) with no medical problems. This was problematic as many fans and readers donated money to him in the belief he needed the support. What also emerged is gaslighting behaviour by Sonny and co, as well as stories of people being manipulated against each other and bullied out of the community. Ultimately Sonny chose to leave social media and Riptide Publishing and his agent have dropped him.
