what i meant by "rival" in a shorthand way is that her characterization is always written in opposition to Hürrem's. Falconer!Hürrem is evil incarnate? then Mahidevran is a poor innocent victim. ukrainean!Hürrem is a good girl who actually never did anything that she's accused of? then Mahidevran is an evil bimbo. as you've said it, there are patterns and archetypes. she's never written as the protagonist of her own story but as a character in Hürrem's and it's a damn shame when her historical counterpart seems cool AF.

MC writers aren't as unaware as they may seem, they simply included stuff that people already expected to see. so Mahidevran here follows the same pattern, not because they didn't care to do anything else, but to play to viewer's expectations. they tried to go beyond the pattern as they did with all characters but i'm just so soured over said pattern + all the tiny moments they dropped the ball (such as this) that personally i would still include them in the camp that did her wrong

I don't know if it's because he values Anjin and Mariko more or if he just hates him but for a guy who sacrificed himself for him Toranaga really likes to give Buntaro shit, and I am here for it. Episode 7 he basically told him he would accept his request if he admitted he was a cuck whose wife would rather fuck a caveman. yupp. i find the threat to her children's lives the rational pragmatic reason that motivates her actions, while the actual trauma of what happened + having to see his stupid his face everyday is the reason for her intense emotional hatred of him

but really, this ties into a larger point that Hürrem isn't a particulary vindictive and vengeful person, and those who find her so take for granted the fact that she is literally stuck living with these people. nevermind that she can't outright express her contempt because she has to "mind her manners" or sum shit. she literally has to see them everyday. her hatred is intense because some bitch who tried to poison her literally lives across the hall from her.

once Ibrahim and Hafsa die she barely thinks about them. and when Mahidevran leaves for Manisa and after a while they meet Hürrem is surprisingly chill towards her. that isn't a vindictive and petty person, but someone who needs some goddamn space!!
