Gundogs are easy [Russian, archived] compared to hunting spitzes. And training a spitz already comes naturally to me: just be their best friend. So, I don't know what to say if you screw up on training a breed which is meant to be human-focused. All it takes is five-minutes a day [YouTube, 13:48, Swedish, archived] over the summer [YouTube, 8:21, Swedish, archived] for a reliable dog prepared for the autumn and winter. And it's totally fine to have a dog that is not food-motivated. You just need to find other ways to make yourself look really exciting [YouTube, 6:18, Swedish] in the dog's eyes. And no, this is not so-called "purely positive" rhetoric. If conservative dog trainers in other countries can train their dogs without resorting to using aversive tools or compulsion methods, then there is something wrong with you as a person, not the liberals you perceive as your enemies. It takes a lot of patience and work on yourself [Russian, archived] to be a better person.

All I can say is if you're unironically using "woke" as a pejorative, you've already lost the battle considering the origin of the word. No one should ever take you seriously again.

*squinting at last night's post with its interrupted middle sentence* oops. Meant to finish that but Matilda was doing her job VERY aggressively and made me go to bed and finish writing on mobile last night and I kind of forgot about it.

(I had pie and I think she reasoned that if she made me get up at the second bedtime alarm and go the fuck to bed, she could have a little bit of the crust. She was, in fact, correct about this—and to my mingled delight and chagrin, she refused to be bought off and frog marched me directly to the sink for toothbrushing.)

Updates from NKK on the Cavalier outcross project, as it's getting ready to kick off:

The project is expected to last a minimum of 4 generations, covering approx. 9-12 years.

The project will be evaluated at each generation, and adjustments may be made. Health status, number of project dogs to pass to the next generation, which criteria to prioritize to further the project, etc. will be considered.

Both project dogs and purebred Cavaliers will require proper health testing. MRI screening for SM/CM must be done prior to breeding, both at/after 18 months and at/after 3yrs. Additional required tests include heart, patella, eyes, and DNA status for EFS and CCS.

The outcross project will only continue if the health status of the project dogs is overall better than that of purebred Cavaliers.

The final progression plan is being put to the NKK's board of health next tuesday. As I understand it, they have combinations selected and ready to go once the formalities are done with.

The Swedish project has their second litter on the ground, a Lhasa apso x.

Well that gives me a lot better insight into the upcoming book "Constructing Canine Consent: Conceptualising and adopting a consent-focused relationship with dogs" by Erin Jones.

I was already considering buying it because a) top tier behaviour trainer who keeps up to date on new techniques and approaches really enjoyed a seminar by Erin Jones and is intending to buy the book and b) constantly seeking to better understand choice/control/consent for my dogs in our life.

But this interview removes a lot of the unknown on book content and is definitely going to be something I will want to read.

“Dogs are not stubborn, spiteful, or withholding. They either haven’t been adequately taught and the behavior sufficiently proofed, or they have not been motivated to act. There are no other options.
