The Road Less Traveled

The first time I traveled outside South Africa I was 7 years old. It was a family trip to Victoria Falls, in Zimbabwe, and also visited some tourist attractions in Harare. This was when I fell in love with traveling. I got to see a lot of beautiful places and meet really interesting people. Seeing different cultures was an amazing experience.  Last year December my family and I traveled to Botswana, where we went to Thaba Ya Nkwe Lodge which is located in quite a distance from Francistown (in the middle of nowhere). There is a lot more places like Maputo in Mozambique were my family and I traveled to. Locally I have been to Durban (2016) and Mpumalanga (2015) but these were school trips in high school.

I am only 19 years old but I have traveled to so many places around Southern Africa and I plan on travelling more in and out of South Africa. Growing up like this has inspired me to become a Travel Journalist. For those who may not know, a travel journalist generally writes stories about people and places in a way where they relay facts. The main aim with travel journalism is to create a wider view of the world we live in.

A journalist aims to be honest at all times, present only facts and do non-biased work. Some forms of journalism are seen as more important than others and travel journalism is sometimes seen as not having any purpose. This is because some people may not understand how helpful it can be in humanizing distant places. For example, many who resided in the European or American countries believed that there are no houses nor schools nor buildings in Africa; but through social media and print media they were able to see how Africa was/is truly developing. Travel journalists used facts and non-biased information to show people the growth in African countries.

Travel journalism offers a way for people to learn more about other cultures which is quite important when it comes to globalization.
